Our students (and their teachers) have been working incredibly hard and the work will continue over their last term at school and into the exams in October. A great example of this commitment was demonstrated recently at the HSC Drama Showcase night, where our Year 12 students performed their drama pieces in front of a live audience. This experience has helped them to improve their performance skills and it was wonderful to see them grow in confidence. I received glowing feedback from the family and friends who were present on the night and a huge thank you needs to go to Ms Russell, Ms Nand and Mr Gillett for their work with the group. Thanks also to Mr Castillon and Ms Hunt for their support in the lead up and on the night. As a school we wish all our Year 12 students the best for the coming weeks and months. Last week also saw one of the ‘landmark’ events on our calendar, with the annual Science Fair taking place. The Fair was bigger and better than ever, with the gym full of amazing projects from our Year 7 and 8 students, as well as those from the students of Currans Hill and Mount Annan Public Schools. It was fantastic to see the quality of the projects on show, all of which reflected the student’s inquisitive scientific minds and it was also a pleasure to interview a large number of the competitors, who were incredibly passionate about their work. A number of students won special prizes on the night but really, every student who took part was a winner in my eyes. Special thanks go to our Head Teacher Science, Mrs Villanueva, whose hard work and enthusiasm for the event ensures it is always highly successful, year after year, and to all those staff and community members who helped out on the night. Friday also saw all Year 10 take part in the ‘NAMBUS’ incursion, where a group of Vietnam War veterans brought their bus full of memorabilia to the school and shared their experiences with our students. The day provided a real insight into life during the 1960’s and gave the students some idea of the horrors that these men and their comrades faced during that conflict. Mr Backhouse, Mr Johnson and the whole of the HSIE staff did an amazing job in organising and staffing the day and the veterans are keen to return to the school in 2017. Finally, I wanted to make mention of the Trivia Night held last Saturday night in our gym, which was a fundraising event in support of the Hill family. As you may be aware from the local media, the family have two sons who are battling a debilitating illness and it was great to see the community come together to support such an incredibly worthy cause. Everyone had a great night and more importantly people from every part of our community contributed to raising a substantial amount of money to assist the Hill family in their struggles ahead. My deepest thanks go to Mrs Sandra Wilson and her team from Currans Hill Public School who worked tirelessly before, during and after the night to ensure its’ success, to my staff who assisted and supported the evening and the hundreds of community members who were so generous with their time and money. I know the family really appreciate the support during this difficult time. Deputy Principal’s reportIt has been very busy at school recently, and we have somany events to celebrate. The Science Fair was fantastic, aswere the NAMBUS Year 10 Incursion and the Drama recital forYear 12 HSC practice. Students who have been consistentlydisplaying our core values of strive, respect and cooperate wererecognised with Bronze certificates distributed and a rewardBBQ lunch. It was great to see the line for the BBQ stretchright across the quad, as so many students achieved thisrecognition.

Year 12 have just completed their Trial Higher School CertificateExaminations. This is the last major in-school assessment forYear 12 before they complete their 13 years of schooling withthe HSC exams in Term 4. They should be starting to get resultsback now and focussing on the last few weeks of classes.Year 12, should be congratulated on their conduct and attitudethroughout those examinations.

Major exams, like the HSC and trial exams that we have justcompleted cause significant disruption to our school. They arecompleted in the gymnasium, as well as in classrooms, withupstairs C Block being used for these recent exams. Thisresults in a lot of room changes and flexibility. These roomchanges also meant that many teachers could no longer usetheir facilities, which can cause significant inconvenience toteaching and learning and I would like to particularly thankthe PDHPE, HSIE and CAPA faculties for their assistance andunderstanding during this time. There will also be room changesin Term 4 when the HSC starts.

Year 8 and Year 10 are both in the process of selecting subjectsthey wish to complete in 2017. Year 10, your final choiceshave now been logged on line, and we will be organising classgroups shortly. I thank you for your cooperation during thisprocess.

Year 8, have this week been choosing the electives that theywish to study throughout Year 9 and 10. For the first time intheir schooling, students are able to select three subjects thatyou will be working on over the next one to 2 years. It is soimportant that this decision wisely, choosing subjects that youlike, enjoy and are interested in, and not just choose somethingas your friends are also choosing it. You have control over youreducation for the first time, use it wisely. Once choices havebeen made, the Curriculum Committee will be determining, based on student choices, what subjects are going to beoffered. Unfortunately we are not able to offer every subject, soit is very important to make wise decisions.

Throughout the process of Year 8 subject selections, studentrepresentatives from Years 9, 10 and 11 spoke to Year 8 aboutdifferent courses on offer. I would like to tank and congratulate

to student subject representatives for the great talks they gave. They were informative, detailed and engaging. Year 8 now hasthe ‘Stage 5 2017 Subjects’ guide which has more detaileddescriptions about all courses on offer, an in particular outlineswhat fees may be attached to subjects.

Thank you to the following student representatives

interview questions asked our guests about elements of theirlives here in Australia well as the challenges experienced bytheir parents moving to a different country negotiating theacculturation and becoming Australian Citizens.

The students were completely engaged throughout the lessonand able to practice their interview questioning technique. MrBackhouse recorded the lesson so that the class can practicemaking a transcript for use in acknowledging and using primaryresearch sources for the Personal Interest Projects in 2017.

The class was delighted when Gursargar played some Sikhreligious music on the Harmonium and then allowed MrBackhouse to play a little bit of the Beatles favourite Let it Be.We all learnt a lot from these gentlemen about a misunderstoodand misrepresented religion that identifies God and good ineveryone and everything and promotes love, compassion andhumility; lessons that all people would benefit from.

We look forward to seeing more of our new Sikh friends onDiversity Day in Term 4. We are very grateful to Gursargar andSunit for taking time to spend with us. Many thanks.

VIETNAM VETERANS: NAMBUS INCURSIONYEAR 10 HISTORY

On Friday 19th August 2016 all our Year 10 students were verylucky to be engaged in learning about Australia’s involvementin the Vietnam War and the Vietnam War era during a visitfrom seven Vietnam War Veterans on board their Nambus. Weare very grateful that these Vietnam veterans were able to giveup their day to help teach our students. Our sincere gratitudegoes to; Lindsay Thompson, Lindsay Wilson, Chris Stone, JohnPollitt, Rob Purcell, Leo Lees and Gordon Lawson…manythanks gentlemen.

The Central Coast Veterans Association website at the linkbelow explains their Nambus as follows;

http://www.nswcentralcoastveterans.org.au/nambus.php

“The NAMBUS is a former Sydney city bus donated to ourassociation by the New South Wales Government so we cantravel to schools throughout the State giving presentations toYear 10 students on Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War.The bus contains a large number of photographs, artefactsand many items of memorabilia giving the students a soundunderstanding of the Australian servicemen and women'sinvolvement in the Vietnam War for their modern history studies.

The NAMBUS carries practice M60 link ammunition, a used66mm M72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon, a 105mm Howitzer

Artillery practice round and several artillery and naval cartridges. All these have been either been used or made safe. In any caseall these items have been shown and handled by students overthe past 10 or more years. They are all innocuous.

The bus is fully insured against public liability and all crewmembers are cleared under the NSW Working With Childrenprogram.

What is on the NAMBUS

The HSIE faculty organised three learning experiences for all theYear 10 students who attended Nambus Day, that catered fora diverse range of learning styles in terms of our understandingof the pedagogy connected to understanding multipleintelligences as follows.

The students were split into three groups for the day androtated through these three different experiences.

• Flags of the following nations that took part in the warU.S.A., Phillipines, Australia, Thailand, New Zealand,Taiwan, South Korea, South Vietnam

• Service uniforms, medals and decorations

• Conscription and enlistment papers distributed bythe Labour and National Service

• Photographs of troops in action

• Photographs showing Armoured Personnel Carriers(APCs), tanks and 105mm field guns

• Photographs of the enormous tunnel systems dug bythe Viet Cong to conceal their presence

• Samples of the Vietnamese currency

• Samples of ammunition used by the three Australianservices

• Photographs of naval ships, and aircraft used byAmerica and Australia

• Agent Orange display

• Newspaper cuttings

• Books containing the names of 500 Australianservicemen who were killed in the war in SouthVietnam

• Display by members of the Central CoastSub-Branch of the VVPPAA who made a return visitto South Vietnam

• Video showing the conscription process, troops inaction and The Battle Of Long Tan

• Photos of several of the NAMBUS crew memberstaken during their service in Vietnam.”

1. The Nambus Experience – students were guidedthrough the displays in and around the bus andallowed to interact with artefacts such as weaponsand uniforms while being instructed by the veteranson the characteristics of the artefacts and variousaspects of the conflict in Vietnam. This experiencecatered for our interpersonal, bodily, kinaestheticlearners significantly well.

2. Stories from the Veterans in classroom forum –this allowed each group to spend an hour with at

To round off an excellent day of learning in Period 5 the wholeYear 10 group went to the Hall to watch a drama performancetitled “The Lucky Country”. Elaine Morel a professional actorfrom the Troubie Pty Ltd Drama Company brilliantly portrayedthe experiences of six characters who represented a crosssection of migrants and their families who have arrived inAustralia since 1950. The characters of Beth Barry an English“10 Pound Pom” and Mimi a refugee from war torn Vietnamprovided clear connections to the learning from the previousthree Nambus lessons. Elaine moved seamlessly through herroutine inspiring the students with remarkable capacity to useminimal props to afford complete changes in character usingdifferent accents, dramatic purpose and bodily movements. These combined with great humour entertained the studentsfrom start to finish. This provided clear engagement for thebodily, kinaesthetic, visual and spatial learners in Year 10.

It was a very special day made possible by the great teamworkof the HSIE Faculty members. Thanks to Mr Johnson fororganising the catering, class lists and room changes and to MrHughes for organising the groups on the day , Ms Colluccio,Mrs Savage and Mrs Kirkman for supervising and assistingwith morning tea and lunch for the Veterans. Your help andsupport is greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed by theVets themselves. Nambus Day would not have been possiblewithout the support of the ladies in the front office especiallyMrs Burns and help from the CAPA staff, Mr Castillon forallowing us to use their movement studio all day and organisingphotography and video recording, Ms Hunt for her expertiseand assistance with sound at the last minute and Ms Nandfor her support with the drama production. The PE/PD/HealthFaculty donated use of their Hall Period 5 for the dramaperformance which was essential too. Thank you all so much. Thanks also to all the staff who covered lessons for HSIEteachers in lieu of Year 10 classes and for Mr White’sassistance with cover on the day.

Lindsay the Vietnam Veteran group leaders’ final comments tome before he left were, “….your kids were great we all really

enjoyed our time at your school today, and we would bevery happy to come back again next year”. On that notethen I am pleased to congratulate all the Year 10 students ontheir excellent behaviour and engagement in learning. You haveall strived to learn about Australia’s involvement in the VietnamWar. You have demonstrated a most welcome level of respectto the Vets and teaching staff and cooperated magnificently. You have all tried to be the best you can be……well doneeveryone. You Rock!

The Visual Arts HSC students are putting the final touches totheir major works and will be having a small exhibition on the29th of August at 4:30pm to 6:30pm in C Block before theypack them for transportation to the marking centre.

We the staff and school community wish these students all thebest in their HSC and hope they achieve the results that theydeserve.

Drama Students in Year 7 are working on a Mime unit, whichthey are really enjoying. The best set designs and postersfrom their previous elements of production task are currentlyon display in the library. The Drama Club students arestrengthening their improvisational skills in Theatre Sports on

least three Vietnam Veterans who told the stories oftheir experiences in the Vietnam conflict. Studentswere able to ask questions and interact personallywith the Vets. This experience focused on ourverbal and linguistic learners as well asinterpersonal learners. The power of narrativewas central to the learning in these sessions.

3. Music of the Vietnam War – Using an informalarrangement of groups in the CAPA movementstudio, Mr Backhouse Head Teacher HSIE engagedstudents in the music of the Anti War Movement andMoratoriums of the Vietnam Era and beyond.Students had to engage in listening to anddeveloping an understanding of the lyrics of songs byBob Dylan, Donovan, Barry McGuire, Redgum andCold Chisel. The focus on the songs “I was only 19”by Redgum and “Khe Sahn” by Cold Chiselheightened students understandings of PTSDsuffered by the ex-servicemen. This session allowedour linguistic, visual and musical learners toengage significantly well with some newunderstandings.

Year 10 Advisor ReportThis term is flying and Year 10 recently completed their SubjectSelections for Year 11 and 12. The process was really helpedwith each family meeting with an executive member or YearAdvisor to determine the choice of subjects for studentsentering Year 11. From my meetings, I came away with a greatsense of satisfaction and achievement, knowing students hadselected subjects that would be a spring board into the nextchapter of their lives. Many students expressed a desire toperform well in the HSC and were excited about the choicesthat would be created after their schooling life at MAHS cameto a climax at the end of 2018.

On another great positive, the inaugural Mount Annan HighBoys Program commenced this term, with twelve year 10 boysinvolved. So far the boys have participated in a range of topicsand activities, including a “Value of the Week” exercise.
