MAIN

When we think of AUDI, we feel ‘Ah, okay it’s a German Car, nothing special. But trust my word, thatis all about to change with the New Audi A8L, L standing for Long Wheel Base because this one is130mm longer than the standard A8’s. Now these are standard models. German Tuning GiantsABT Sportsline is already presenting its version of the new premium limousine A8. A prominentbusinessman in Tanzania who has a taste for unique cars owns one of these AUDI A8L ABT Edition andthe Motor Bazaar Team were lucky enough to get up close and personal with this beauty.Let us begin with the appearance – A LOT of small touches have been made to make the car moreAERODYNAMIC. These include The Front Wing, Side Skirts, Rear Wing, Rear Skirt, Exhaust Coversand the CR wheel in 20” or 21”. Yes they may seem tiny, but they count A LOT in terms of the carstability. Everything about the new Audi A8 is soft spoken. It doesn't so much drive down a motorwayas ooze over it. The engine is muted hypnotic thrum, the new eight-speed gearbox flirting through theratios like it's playing a musical scale. Wind noise is non-existent; road noise dropped to abarely-there hiss. Even the suspension is quiet - you feel bumps if you hit them hard enough, but youdon't hear them. Gives you that premium, bossy, posh like feeling.

Under the hood, ABT also pushes out 35 additional horsepower(350 to 385) and raises torque from 590 ft-lbs to 650 ft-lbs onthe 4.2-liter turbo-diesel. “The machine fits the large limousineperfectly”, says Hans-Juergen Abt in justification of the decision. The ABT AS8 has been optimized to meet the high demands ofits drivers: ABT Sportsline has not changed the elegant gliderinto a racing car, but carefully into a confident and sportyautomobile.

Page 9: Motor Bazaar Issue 2

The cabin is a grand sweep oftailored perfection, with innumerablethreads of super-gadget woven intoan architecture that doesn't threatenwith button frenzy, or get allimpenetrable by congealingfunctions into a set of submenusaccessed by a computer mouse withpretentions. There's a Multi MediaInterface screen that pops up out ofthe dash, controlled by a simplescroll-and-click wheel. Gears areaccessed via a lovely gear selectorthat looks a bit like the throttlecontrol from an aeroplane, whichthen acts as a kind of lazy wrist-restwhen you're playing with functionson the move. The seats adapt andmove in ways your body may noteven accommodate. For the first fewtens of minutes, all you do is sit in thething, pushing and prodding switches.

Drive it, and the impression is thatAudi is taking its flagship modelvery seriously. The air suspension isa serious filter: even when you playwith the Audi ‘drive select' system, which alters damping rates, throttle response, gearbox strategyand go faster, it remains suppleand absorbent. Quattro four-wheeldrive, and even though the generalfeature is one of gentle understeer,if you option the sports differential, you can even provoke a whiff ofoversteer as torque is shuttled tothe outside wheel.

All in all.. an amazing car.Defines Luxury Driving.

EARTHQUAKE HITS ITALY

Production of Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghinisupercars ground to a halt on 29th May after a5.8-magnitude earthquake hit northern Italy. The earthquake struck northern Italy yesterday at about9:00 AM local time, and a 5.6-magnitude aftershockfollowed roughly three hours later. The epicenter wassaid to be near Mirandola, Italy, which means it wassome 34 miles from Ferrari’s plant in Maranello,22 miles from Maserati’s plant in Modena, and 20 milesfrom Lamborghini’s plant in Sant’Agata Bolognese.None of the Ferrari, Maserati, or Lamborghini workerswere injured at the plants, although the death toll in theregion has hit 17, due in part to the fact that manybuildings in the region were already weakened by a6.0-magnitude earthquake that rattled the countryon May 20th. None of the three plants sustainedstructural damage.

Maserati is known for producing sensual and seductive cars. The interior leather is buttery and fragrant, the exterior designsare eye-catching, and the engines are powerful, but could aswitch to diesel engines mean that the aural pleasure couldbecome manufactured? Maserati is planning to branchout and add diesel engines to its range along with theforthcoming Kubang SUV and smaller sedan. But Australia’sWhat Car? is reporting that Maserati will use the cars’ stereosto pipe in a “sportier exhaust note.” This won’t be the first timethat an automaker has piped false engine noises into the cabinthrough the stereo system. BMW is already doing it with the2012 M5 sedan; however, the BMW plays a louder version ofthe 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8′s exhaust note.

The Porsche 911 Carrera S is exclusive in that it costsabout $96,000 to get one, but the new 2012 911 ClubCoupe is even more restricted: it costs about twice asmuch as a 911 Carrera S, it’s only available to PorscheClub owners.
