MB: How was it?T: Mixed emotions actually. I just wanted to �nish the rally with a good position

MB: Why a VW Beetle ?T: I wanted to show that not only Evo’s and Subaru’s dominate in the local rally scene. Besides driving a RWD Volkswagen is more challenging and more thrilling.

MB: Biggest Acheivement?T: 2012 National 2WD champion

MB: Would you sell your VW?T: It’s a classic Safari rally car, yes if I get a good o�er I would

MB: Scariest / Trickiest Rally moment?T: We had a uphill, then R4, took the corner nicely but due to under steering and because the engine is at the back, the back bit of the car pulled me in one direction, plus it was muddy so the car was sliding more. Putting the car back on the road was a big task

MB: What is the biggest challenge you face?T: Sponsors are a very vital boost needed in rally. Rally is a very exciting and thrilling sport but expensive. We need sponsors to back us up. I know I wont let them down.

Whats the first thing that comes in your mind when you think of a rally car?Subaru’s or Mitsubishi’s of course, or if a retro 80 – 90s classic then Opel Mantas, Nissan PA10’s.One brand that is forgotten is Volkswagen. Volkswagen was active in motorsports in the 1960sand early 1970s. Starting with the VW 1500, in the mid 1960s the peak of their racingperformance was achieved with the VW 1302S and VW 1303S (known as the Salzburg Rally Beetle)from 1971 to 1973. These vehicles were entered in such famous races as TAP (Portugal),Austrian Alpine, Elba, Acropolis etc. The engines were highly modified delivering 125 hp (93 kW),later on mated to a Porsche 914 five-speed manual gearbox. The fuel crisis, along with the arrival of the Volkswagen Golf (Rabbit), put an end to the days ofunofficially supported rallying in 1974. All vehicles either used for training or actual racing weresold off to privateers, many kept racing with noticeable results until the early 1980s.Volkswagen is now active again in motorsports with their entry in the Dakar rally with theirVolkswagen Touareg and the WRC with their Volkswagen Polo R WRC.Coming back to our article. We have a look at a very special and unique rally car which has beenactive in the rally scene since 2010. A 1971 Volkswagen Beetle, built from Scrap. Tufail Amin amechanic by profession built it in 1 year and is currently rallying with it. We arrive at his Garageand begin the shoot at 5pm. Just being the around the car and you get these chills down your spine.Its a classic monster with a lot of attitude i must say. It has a smiley face on the head lamps tocalm down the heat this monster is throwing. While my photographer works his magic,i interview the champ.
