Fr. Adam’s Corner

Dear Parishioners: Last weekend people of faith and good will around the world mourned the death of young Alfie Evans, the 23-month-old boy who was basically sentenced to death by the British National Health Service. Little Alfie was in Alder Hey Children’s Hospital whose doctors said he had an undiagnosed and untreatable neuro-logical condition that caused irreparable brain damage. For months Alfie’s parents fought in court to be allowed to take him to another hospital or at least to take him home. Alfie was, through the inter-vention of the pope, even granted Italian citizenship and an Italian hospital was willing to take him. All of these efforts were denied by the courts. Think about that. Doctors and courts decided that a mother and father could not take their baby to another hospital, one willing to take him, for another opinion and possible further treat-ment. Doctors and courts decided a mother and father could not take their little baby home to give him comfort if he was to die. Finally, the doctors, against his parents’ wishes, removed Alfie’s ventilator. But something unexpected happened. He didn’t die. He began breathing on his own. So, what did the hospital do? Rethink their decision? Reevaluate his circumstances? Give him better care? NO! They refused to feed him for seventy-two hours. Clearly, they wanted him to die. And he did, but not for five days after hav-ing his ventilator removed. He was just too weak to continue on his own but weakened deliberately by the hospital who for so long refused to feed him. They even threw out the family’s priest who was there to give them spiritual care. This did not happen in some third world country run by a two-bit petty dictator. This happened in Great Britain. And it is not the first time. Recall last July a simi-lar case, that of Charlie Gard. We know of these two cases because the parents fought the hospital’s and court’s decisions. It begs the question, how many more have there been that we do not know about? Again, this happened in Britain, the home of the Magna Carta, once the standard bearer of what it meant to be a “civilized people”. If this can happen there, it can happen anywhere, it can happen here. The great Catholic evangelist and preacher, Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said “It is characteristic of any decaying civilization the great masses of the people are unaware of the tragedy. Humanity in a crisis is generally insensitive to the gravity of the times in which it lives. Only those who live by faith really know what is happening in the world; the great masses are unconscious of the destructive processes going on in the world because they have lost the vision of the heights from which they have fallen.” Make no mistake, we are in decay. There are dark forces at work, forces that are remak-ing our society from one that recognizes the dignity of each human person as coming from God, to a society in which human dignity, and therefore all rights, are given, and taken, by the state, an atheis-tic state. This remaking of society began with the widespread ac-ceptance of contraception, by which man decides the meaning and purpose of human sexuality, independent of the plan of God the Creator. It continued with the rise of abortion on demand, where man decides, apart from God, and against God, what is and is not human life. These dark forces now continue their remake of our society through the forced euthanasia of children like Charlie Gard and Alfie Evans, where again man, or certain men in power, take the place of God and decide when a human life is no longer worth living, no longer worth the resources of society to provide even the most basic care such as food. If these dark forces are not stopped the future of our society will be one of unthinkable horror. These forces can be stopped. They can be stopped by those who have the view from the heights provided by true faith in the One True God.

Continued Fr. Adam’s Corner Make no mistake though, until the Lord returns in glory there will be evil, but we do not have to condone evil as a society, nor do we have to allow the state to enshrine evil into law, thus promoting and further causing it. Our two most powerful weapons against this evil are Eucharistic Adoration and the Holy Rosary. Sacrifice some time every week before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and bring before the Eucharistic Heart of Christ the intention of the conversion of our society. Pray the Holy Rosary and ask Our Blessed Mother to shower this world with the grace of conversion to her Son. A con-sistent effort of prayer will bring about a peaceful and lasting change. And remember, despite the evil we face, be of good cheer, for Christ has already overcome the world.

Peace Fr. Adam
