Undoubtedly waltz takes special place
among all dances. Nowadays it’s impossible
to imagine, but at the end of the 18th century
the motions of waltz were considered indecent.
Indignation concerning the fact that «sensual
and obscene dance» waltz was included in
the royal ball program was expressed by «The
Times». Nevertheless waltz rapidly became
extremely popular, and in the 19th century
became the main dance of all balls. Waltz
began its great move from Vienna thanks to
famous compositions by «waltz king» Johann
Strauss the Son. It’s interesting to know that
waltz has penetrated into «serious» music: into
ballet, opera, then into symphony, and fi nally
becomes separate concert form.
Sergey Kondrashev
graduated from Moscow
State Conservatory named
after P. Tchaikovsky majoring
in choral conducting (class
of Professor V. Goriunov) and
in opera and symphonic
conducting (classes of
Professors M. Ermler and
G. Rozhdestvensky).
Being a student, Sergey Kondrashev started
his career in conducting. In 2000 he was
invited as a conductor to Chuvash State Opera
and Ballet Theatre and as Musical Director and
Chief Conductor to Chuvash State Chamber
Orchestra. In 2001 he was admitted to the
State Academic Bolshoy Theatre of Russia as an
assistant conductor.
Sergey Kondrashev worked with National
Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia (Artistic
Director and Chief Conductor — Vladimir
Spivakov), Russian National Orchestra (Artistic
Director — Mikhail Pletnev), and with Symphony
Orchestra of Russia (Artistic Director — Veronica
Dudarova) as well. Since 2005 to 2009 Sergey
Kondrashev was a conductor of Moscow City
Symphony — Russian Philharmonic. Since 2011
Sergey Kondrashev is Artistic Director and Chief
Conductor of Symphony Orchestra of Orpheus
Radio station. Tours — USA, China, Germany.

G. Verdi. RequiemSoloists — Lyubov Stuchevskaya, soprano; Agunda Kulaeva, mezzo-soprano;
Sergey Balashov, tenor; Alexander Teliga, bass
Yurlov State Academic Choir Chapel of Russia
Conductor — Dmitri Jurowski
Requiem is one of the most outstanding
compositions by Verdi, which stands in the
same row with his best operas and at the same
time is his only major composition not for opera
theatre. Death of Italian poet and writer, author
of the novel Engagement Alessandro Manzoni
was the reason for creating Requiem. Verdi
admired Manzoni very much and worshiped
him.
Requeim by Verdi was performed for the
fi rst time on May 22, 1874 in Milan, at St.
Mark’s Church conducted by the author and
with participation of grand choir, orchestra
and the best Italian singers. In a few days
Requiem was repeated in the Milan opera
house La Scala, then it was performed in
Paris, Vienna, Petersburg. Requeim was a great
success everywhere. The fi rst huge movement
of Requiem is called «Requiem aeternam»
(«Eternal Peace») and plays a role of prologue.
In the second movement «Dies Irae» («The Day
of Ire»)Verdi embodies profound sufferings
of a person and his struggle with menacing
hostile forces. Pacifi c and pure peace and lyrical
contemplation prevail in the third movement
«Domine» («Lord»). In the fourth movement
«Sanctus» («Saint») in a way magnifi cent and
skillfully composed polyphonic piece the
composer sings of artistic power of creation.
In the fi fth movement «Agnus Dei» («The Lamb
of God») Verdi creates simple and morally
pure musical image. The sixth movement
«Lux aeterna» («Eternal Light») presents
itself as relatively small intermezzo, which
prepares for grandiose fi nal of Requiem. The
Final named «Lidera me» («Liberate me») is
majestic musical composition which serves
as the result of dramatic development. Along
with psychological deepness and emotional
musical language, theatrical imagery, splendid
melodism and creative colourness which makes
this composition closer to the best latest Verdi’s
operas are inherent in Requiem.

M. Ravel. Concerto № 1 for piano and orchestra
M. Ravel. Choreographic poem «Waltz»
I. Stravinsky. The Firebird
B. Bartok. Ballet suite from The Miraculous Mandarin
Soloist — Andrei Korobeinikov, piano
Conductor — Dmitri Jurowski
Ravel is fairly called composer-impressionist,
however typical features of impressionism
appeared merely in some compositions, classical
precision and proportionality of structures,
clarity of style, clearness of lines and fi ne
tuning in details making prevail in other pieces.
Concerto for piano and orchestra in G Major
Ravel himself called «divertissement in Mozart’s
style». Ravel wrote about choreographic poem
«Waltz» in his autobiography: «It is great waltz,
somehow a tribute to great Johann Strauss. I
intended this piece to be in a way apotheosis
of the Viennese waltz, impression from its
whirling is fantastic and fatal. I placed this waltz
in the atmosphere of the Emperor’s Palace,
approximately around 1855».
During three years of collaboration with
Diagilev’s company I. Stravinsky wrote three
ballets which made him world known — The
Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite
of Spring (1913). Stravinsky turned to Russian
folklore which different strata were originally
interpreted in the music of each ballet. The
Firebird amazes by sophisticated fecundity
of orchestra colours, vivid contrasts between
poetic round dance lyrics and fi ery dances.
The ballet by Bela Bartok The Miraculous
Mandarin (1919) is based on the story by
Melchior Lengyel, its heroes are a girl and three
tramps. The main hero — Chinese Mandarin
is captivated by passion. The tramps try to
suffocate him, to stab and to hang him, but
life does not leave the Mandarin till the girl
fi nally kisses him. The music of The Miraculous
Mandarin is combination of expressionist
gloominess and human warmth. Bartok said that
in the world where wars were possible, where
normal human feelings, moral and culture were
annihilated, even love gained such character
which moves it closer to dance of death.
Andrei Korobeinikov was born in Moscow
in 1986. The young pianist performed in
more than 20 countries all over the world
and was rewarded more than 20 prizes in
national and international competitions
among them Alexander Scriabin International
Piano Competition and Rachmaninoff Piano
Competition in Los Angeles. At the age of 19,
he graduated with honours from Moscow
Conservatory (Best musician of the decade).

Confi rming the status of the orchestra of new
millennium, Moscow City Symphony – Russian
Philharmonic introduces large-scale innovative
project «Classics and modern art» — performing
Symphony № 9 by L. van Beethoven with pho-
to installations. The orchestra is not afraid of
experiments, but it never distorts the essence
of compositions making excellent quality the
corner-stone.
The Ninth Symphony is the greatest compo-
sition by Beethoven which fi nalizes his twenty
fi ve-year symphonic way. It became a part of
world culture history as one of the most signif-
icant creations which express humanistic free-
dom-loving ideals of humanity. Only symphony
orchestra was not enough for Beethoven to
realize his grandiose idea – he wanted to sing
brotherhood of millions, brotherhood of all
people of the world united by common burst of
joy and freedom, that’s why he included chorus
and soloists singing «Ode to Joy» by Schiller.
German photographer and musician Tobias
Melle is creating his compositions in pictures
within 20 years. His visual interpretations of
well-known musical pieces make them multi-
variate. The Four Seasons by A. Vivaldi, Alpine
Symphony by R. Strauss, Symphony № 5 by P.
Tchaikovsky, Symphony «From the New World»
by A. Dvorak were performed in such way in
many cities of Germany, Switzerland, and USA.
The 9th Symphony by L. van Beethoven is
the latest project of T. Melle. Its premiere took
place on April 7 and 9, 2012 in Berlin and Mu-
nich. Photo installations which refl ect contem-
porary life of 15 largest cities of the world were
used for implementation of this project.

Bolero is one of the most well-known com-
positions not only within Ravel’s creative work,
but within all symphonic music of the 20th
century. The author himself characterized it as
follows: «t is a dance in very restrained tempo,
absolutely invariable in its melody, harmony
and rhythm, and rhythm is beaten by the drum.
Orchestra crescendo introduces the only ele-
ment of diversity». Rhythmical fi gure, repeat-
ed a lot of time, makes hypnotic infl uence on
listeners, and the main musical theme which
is growing dynamically because of new instru-
ments introduction, demonstrates exceptional
increase of emotional tension. The score of Bo-
lero is called «miracle of orchestration». Popu-
larity of this composition really has no bound-
aries. It’s included in repertoire of the majority
of world orchestras and conductors.

S. Rachmaninoff. Symphony № 2
S. Rachmaninoff. Concerto № 3 for piano and orchestra
Soloist — Alexander Sinchuk, piano
Conductor — Dmitri Jurowski
Sergey Rachmaninoff is a composer of bright
original gift, a pianist of genius who had no
equal among contemporaries, outstanding con-
ductor — «tripersonal divine being». «I could
never decide what my real mission is — com-
poser, pianist, or conductor. There are moments
when it seems to me that I should be only a
composer, sometimes I suppose I’m a pianist
only», — Rachmaninoff wrote late in life. As a
pianist Rachmaninoff was unanimously recog-
nized as one of the greatest performers of pi-
ano art. His name was ranged with the names
of F. Liszt and A. Rubenstein. His virtuoso skill
was boundless, but he never put it to the fore-
ground and entirely dedicated it to content ar-
tistic plot. Concerto is favourite genre to which
the composer appealed during his lifetime.
Creation of 4 piano concertos and Rhapsody
on a Theme of Paganini which is often called
the Fifth Concerto, covered 51-year period of
composer’s life. The First Concerto was written
in 1891, the Second — in 1901, the Third — in
1909, the Fourth — in 1926 (the second edi-
tion of this concerto dates back to 1928, the
third one was fi nished in 1941), Rhapsody — in
1943.
The Second Symphony has one of special
places in his creative work. Famous Russian
musical critic Nikolay Kashkin wrote that «one
remained under constant fascination of musical
beauty torrent». Russian Musical Newspaper
marked that this composition was «a holiday
for everyone…who likes Russian music». The
composer devoted the symphony to S. Taneev,
his Professor whom he loved and respected.
The premiere of the symphony took place in
Petersburg on January 26, 1908 and in Moscow
on February 2. The author conducted in both
concerts.

The most beautiful dances and songs by
Strauss dynasty.
Music family of Strauss gave the world real
constellation of talents. Johann Strauss the Son
was acknowledged as the most famous of them.
He was the titled «waltz king», the creator of
such Viennese classical operetta masterpieces
as Die Fledermaus and The Gypsy Baron, the
author of many waltzes, polkas, galops, and
marches. Johann Strauss the Father organized
his own orchestra which was recognized one of
the best in Europe, performed as a conductor and
a violinist. Musical talent of Strauss the Father
continued its rich fl owering in his three sons.
Young Strauss the Son could play and conduct
all days and nights long. He composed music
at every given opportunity, devoted his waltzes
to doctors, lawyers, newsmen, coachmen of
Viennese fi acres… People from Vienna, Paris,
New York, Petersburg, Berlin, etc. wanted to
listen to Strauss the Son’s orchestra. Beauty
and ravishment of melodies, magnifi cence of
orchestra colours, inventiveness, and wit of
his dance pieces infl uenced all public — from
inhabitants of city suburbs to famous musicians
of the world.
Two brothers Joseph and Eduard also
continued family musical tradition. The most
popular Polka-pizzicato was written in joint
authorship with Joseph. Johann the elder of
the brothers left more than 500 compositions,
practically in 300 belong to
Joseph and Eduard.

as Papagena (Die Zauberfl ote) at the Salzburg
Festival. Also Elisabeth Schwarz performs at the
Stadttheater Baden and at the Landestheater
Salzburg. In 2009 she was awarded the Armin
Weltner Stipendium from the Opernhaus Zurich.

Antonio Vivaldi, one of the major represent-
atives of Baroque, is recognized as the founder
of instrumental concerto genre, he marked the
beginning of orchestra programme music.
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was born in
Venice on March 4, 1678. The fi rst Vivaldi’s
tutor was his father, violinist at St. Mark’s Ca-
thedral. In 1703 Vivaldi took holy orders and in
September, 1703 he started to work as a tutor
at the orphanage called the Pio Ospedale delia
Pieta. Vivaldi wrote his music very easily and
quickly. In 1718-20 he lived in Mantua where
he wrote operas for carnivals’ season and in-
strumental compositions for Mantuan Duke’s
court. Then he returned to Venice. Soon after
his death the name of the master was forgot-
ten. Only after 200 years, in 1920-s of the XX
century Italian music expert A. Gentili found
unique collection of composer’s manuscripts
(300 concertos, 19 operas, sacred and secular
vocal compositions). Since then genuine re-
naissance of former glory of Vivaldi begins.
The Four Seasons by Vivaldi is one of the
most popular compositions at all times. In
1725 one of the most famous composer’s opus-
es entitled «The Contest between Harmony
and Invention» (op.8). This set includes violin
concertos (here are 12 concertos) as previous
sets as well. First 4 concertos of this set are
entitled by the author, respectively, «Spring»,
«Summer», «Autumn», and «Winter».
Vivaldi wrote about 550 concertos, among
them 350 — for solo instrument and orchestra
(more than 230 for violin), about 40 for 2 in-
struments, more than 30 for several solos and
about 60 for orchestra without solo. He wrote
several concertos for unusual instrument’s
combinations, such as viola d’amour and lute,
and for wind instruments, including clarinet,
horn, bassoon, oboe, and fl ute. Some of his con-
certos are programme, for example, «Storm at
the Sea», (3 concertos have such title), «Hunt-
ing», «Anxiety», «Rest», «Night», «Proteus, or
the World Inside Out». Vivaldi composed a lot
of vocal music (both sacred and secular). He
is the author of tens of operas (about 20 re-
mained).
