!ha"ter #: The Rules$ART ONE: T%E RULES O& KOM'AT

# STATS

(tats represent a character’s physical and spiritual attri"utes and range from ? to ?@, with ;?< "eingthe low end of the scale and ;?@< approaching superhuman a"ility.

Stren(th # this stat represents the character’s raw muscle power and damage dealing a"ility.

A()l)t* # this stat represents the character’s de4terity and accuracy when performing attacks.

S"eed # this stat represents the character’s refle4es and ground speed.

Intell)(en+e # this stat represents the character’s general mental a"ility and perception.

'od* # this stat represents the character’s general fitness level and capa"ility to withstand damage of

all kinds.

!h) ,$ower- # this stat represents the character’s source of spiritual energy, used for performing

special attacks and a"ilities.

. !ON&LI!T RESOLUTION

The formula for resolving resisted actions 7that is, when one player opposes another, such as tracking,

setting am"ushes, fast#talking, kom"at and the like8 is

5 + (acting character’s stat + bonus) – (opposing character’s stat + bonus)

The acting character must roll the resulting num"er or less on ?d?@ to succeed: ;?< is always

successful, ;?@< always fails.

The ;BC "onusD< indicates any "onus applied through use of a character descriptor or prior spendingof $ate points 7see ? E4perience 7$ate8 and 6hi8.

ample/ Faraka 7*nt G8 is lying in wait, knowing that -iu )ang 7*nt 8 is approaching. Iust as -iu

passes "y, Faraka leaps out from the "ushes, hoping to surprise him 7that is, make -iu )ang lose hisfirst turn8. Faraka has the descriptor ;(neaky C<, "ut -iu also has an applica"le descriptor, ;"servant

CJ<. The final total is G C 9 ?@, or . Faraka thus has to roll ;< or less on ?d?@ to surprise -iu.*f a character is attempting an unopposed action that still has the possi"ility of failure 7=umping over a

chasm, for instance8, the opposing num"er is chosen "y the )om"at aster 7)8 from the followinglist

Easy @ 9

8ame 6ote/ All fractions in ortal )on%uest are rounded up to determine end results.

/ DES!RI$TORS

&escriptors are skills, character traits and =o" descriptions all rolled up into one. A player who canwork a character’s descriptor into a non#kom"at action receives the descriptor’s "onus to its stat for that

action.

Page 4: Mortal Konquest

$or e4ample, )ano has the descriptor ;-iar C<. This gives )ano’s player a ;C< "onus to his stat for

any roll he may make when )ano attempts to tell 7or even indicate, as with a flicker of his eyes8 a

convincing untruth. The descriptor is also a point of role#playing. !ather than naming the descriptor ;-ying< or ;Telling

-ies<, calling )ano a ;-iar< gives a clue as to his general unsavory disposition.

A descriptor can also "e used to resist another character’s action. $or instance, (corpion has thedescriptor ;&riven CG<. *f )ano were to tell (corpion a lie that might put (corpion off track, (corpion’s

player could invoke the "onus to resist )ano’s spurious story.Another form of descriptor is the =o". $or instance, )ano also has the descriptor ;ercenary CK<.

This gives )ano’s player a ;CK< die "onus to any ;mercenary#type stuff< )ano may engage in outside

of kom"at 7searching for contacts, negotiating payment for merc =o"s, field#stripping a weapon,

camouflage, field medicine, and so forth8. This, too, can "e a point of role#playing, as )ano may well

fall into the mercenary mindset 7;What’s in it for me5<8.$inally, there is the special effects descriptor, which indicates an a"ility or power a character might

have that the ordinary man in the street doesn’t. )ano, again, has the descriptor ;*nfravision C<, a gift

of his cy"ernetic left eye. ther special effects descriptors may include 3ood -ooks, Feautiful Moice,)een Hearing, &irection (ense, and the like.

8ame 6ote/ &escriptors are not attached to any one stat, "ut apply to any roll which can "e linked to

a descriptor. To use a trivial e4ample, a character with the descriptor ;Tennis ut< would add thedescriptor’s "onus to Agility when actually playing tennis, "ut would add the "onus to *ntelligence if a

point of tennis trivia came up. The final =udgment of what is and is not an appropriate use of a

descriptor is up to the ).Also "ear in mind that descriptors cannot "e invoked directly against opponents in kom"at. That’s

what special moves are for.

KOM'AT

# In)t)at)1e

At the "eginning of each kom"at turn, all kom"atants declare which move they are going to use that

turn and which opponent they will attack. The target must "e in range of this move at the "eginning ofthe turn. The kom"atants then total their chosen move’s "ase (pd C the attacker’s (pd stat and compare

each participant’s total: the highest *nitiative total acts first, and other fighters follow in order. *f two players have the same *nitiative total, their attacks are assumed to go off simultaneously.

6ote/ A character may receive a minus to its *nitiative total due to prior attacks or movement. (ee

section K. Attack Effects and section G ovement.

. To atta+2

Attacks are resolved as resisted actions 7see section J ;6onflict !esolution<8. !emem"er that

descriptors cannot "e invoked during kom"at.

When opponent is dodging…

An attack against a dodging opponent contests the attacker’s Agl versus the opponent’s Agl score. Akom"atant may choose to ;all out dodge<, giving a ;CJ< to its Agl for all attacks this turn, "ut thedefender loses its attack "y taking this option.

When opponent is blocking…

An attack against a "locking opponent is a contest of (pd scores 7to see if the opponent got itsdefenses up in time8. *f the defender is successful, it may deduct its (tr from the (tr of the attack,

suffering only a portion of the original damage. Flocked holds have no effect 7i.e., the target does not

lose a turn8.

Page 5: Mortal Konquest

8/21/2019 Mortal Konquest

/ Atta+2 e33e+ts

An attack will inflict a num"er of Fody points in damage e%ual to its (tr 7or its (tr C the attacker’s (tr

if the attack has o !ange8. Unless a target possesses armor, this amount is directly removed from itsFody stat.

*f a character’s Fody should ever fall to ;@< or less, it is incapacitated and may not act until he has

recovered. This is the point at which a com"atant may inflict a $atality.*n addition, a character that suffers a successful attack will automatically receive a ;#?< to its

*nitiative total on the following com"at turn. This effect is cumulative, so a character who suffers threesuccessful attacks in a row, either from three opponents in one turn or "y one opponent over threeconsecutive turns, will receive a ;#< to its *nitiative result on its ne4t turn. *f a character’s *nitiative

result should ever fall to ;@< or less, it is effectively immo"ile and may neither attack nor move. To

eliminate this negative modifier, a character must leave kom"at or successfully defend itself in a

following turn. 6ote/ *f only two fighters are participating in a kom"at and FTH receive successful attacks in a

com"at turn, this additional modifier may "e ignored.

&atal)t)es

Whenever a character has inflicted enough damage on its opponent to cause it to "e incapacitated 7@

or less Fody8, it may choose to perform a $atality move on its following action. *f a character does not perform a $atality as its ne4t action, one may not "e performed.

A $atality is, essentially, a creative description of what the character does to its opponent in order to

kill it. The player should "e a"le to do anything that is reasona"le to the ). )eep in mind that, while$atalities are focal points of the video game, they are much more serious in the ortal )on%uestN

!23. A character that performs one should "e ready to accept any repercussions that are caused "y it.

4 %eal)n( and Re+o1er*

&ue to their mystical nature, characters recover from wounds and incapacitation very %uickly. A

wounded character may recover its FodyO?@ 7rounded up8 every ten (tandard turns 7J minutes8. A

character that is incapacitated 7"rought to @ or less Fody8 "ut not $atalitied will heal as normal after ten

(tandard turns.

utside of kom"at, all characters move at a rate of ten feet times their (pd per (tandard turn. *nkom"at, however, a more a"stract movement system is used. After all attacks are resolved in a turn,

kom"atants should throw ?d?@ and add their (pd stat scores. They then declare, in ascending order of

(pd rolls, whether they want to close or open the range to an opponent.*n the "asic movement system, characters in kom"at stand at num"ered ;points<. $or instance,

ileena can "e at point K, and (u"#Qero at point P. The a"solute difference "etween point num"ers

*n the e4ample a"ove, ileena and (u"#Qero are two points, or edium !ange, from one another. There is no limit to the num"er of characters that can "e stacked at the same point.

)om"atants can move up to three 78 points in either direction, positive or negative. *f ileena wants

to widen the distance to (u"#Qero, she can move to point J: this puts her K 7P 9 J8 points, or E4treme!ange, from her opponent.

A character takes a ;#?< to ne4t turn’s initiative total for every point it moves, either away from or

toward an opponent. $or instance, ileena’s move a"ove would garner her a ;#J< modifier to ne4tturn’s initiative.

4# M)n)ature S*ste7

The a"ove system is very a"stract, and as such some discrepancies may occur. *ndustrious )s whowant more realism in their "loodletting can use miniatures, poker chips, or OK<#s%uare character chits,

Every character in the ortal )on%uestN universe possesses special moves and a"ilities that place

A character’s source for its powers is limited, however, "y its 6hi stat. $or every use of a special

move, a character loses one 6hi stat point. When a character’s 6hi drops to ;@<, it may no longer use its

;distance< "etween the other !ealm and the utworld is less here than anywhere else, which is why

(hang Tsung chose the island as the location to open the first portal, as well as gather souls to widen it.

When the portal was widened enough 7through the death of one of the original ortal )om"atants8 to

allow (hao )ahn through, the great rent in the fa"ric of reality consumed the temple of (hang Tsungand caused the dormant t. Takashi to erupt e4plosively, spewing flame and ash for do'ens of miles

utworld, if it came from the other end: yes, portals can "e opened in that direction too8.The phrase which closes a portal is actually the reverse of the spell used to open it. The phrasing of

the spell can "e gleaned in several ways. 2erhaps the simplest method is to e4tract it from the "eing

which opened the portal in the first place, through trickery or intimidation. However, many portals are

opened "y (hadow 2riests who do not su"se%uently pass through, or "y a "eing which is killed in thefracas which follows the opening. The phrase can also "e deduced through study of the portal "y

someone who understands how such things are created 7re%uiring the descriptor ;ystical< or

something similar8. Using this method increases the difficulty of closing the portal, however. $inally, itis rumored that a portal may "e closed "y speaking the -ocus, the complete magical formula upon

which all portal spells are "ased. Whether or not the -ocus even e4ists is open to de"ate: there is norelia"le report of such a te4t ever "eing found in the other !ealm. The difficulty of speaking the closing phrase properly is e%ual to the *ntelligence of the "eing which

# T%E OUT;ORLD

The utworld is a dimension parallel to the other !ealm, formed, according to legend, "y the death

of 2’an )u, the god from whose "ody the world was created. Thus were the eternal yin and yangcompleted: where there is life 7the other !ealm8, so there is death 7the utworld8. ote, however,

that the utworld is not the realm of the dead or the dimension of T’ien where many of the younger

gods reside. !ather, it is essentially a manifestation of the ;soul< of 2’an )u, a mystical and changea"le place su"=ect to the whims of its ruler.

Whether or not these legends are true, the utworld does seem to reflect whoever rules it at the time.*n the time "efore the coming of (hao )ahn, the utworld was ruled "y )ing Ierrod. *n his kingdom of Edenia, the utworld had a pastoral, almost dreamlike %uality, and many of its inha"itants were content

to live and work in serenity. However, this peaceful e4istence grated to some, particularly the warlike

(hokanites in their underground lairs. (o when a powerful figure appeared and promised them a target

for their "loodlust, they gladly followed him. At this mysterious, "lack#ro"ed figure’s "idding, the(hokanites poured from the mountains like a "lack flood, ravaging everything in their path. The

peacea"le inha"itants never stood a chance in the initial assault.

Ierrod, hearing of the invasion, sent forth an army of 6entaurians. The two forces clashed for the firsttime on the huge in'ang 2lains, and the utworld shuddered. 3reatly outnum"ered, the 6entaurians

still managed to hold off waves of (hokanite attackers.

As the "attle raged, Ierrod concentrated more and more of his power on aiding his 6entauriandefenders, while allowing the wards which protected his palace to weaken. *t was an easy matter, then,

for the dark#ro"ed figure to enter the palace with a few simple illusions and "utcher Ierrod’s wives and

children in their sleep. Then, as Ierrod cried out in anguish to see his family’s remains strewn a"out theroom, the ro"ed figure struck him down with a single "low from "ehind. Using a magical formula of

his own devising, the unro"ed (hao )ahn stole Ierrod’s soul and power.

$or his first act, (hao )ahn "anished the 6entaurians to the deep forests and caused them to forget

everything they ever knew, forcing them to "uild their society over from the "eginning. Then he gotdown to the "usiness of remaking the utworld in an image more suita"le to his desires.

*n the millennia since, the utworld has "ecome dark and twisted. The sky is a miasma of lurid pink

and yellow vapors, "eating down with unnatural heat one moment, "lowing with icy winds the ne4t: the

sun, if there is one, is never visi"le. At night, stinking grey clouds writhe, lit only "y the great funeral pyres which dot the in'ang 2lains, in which the "odies of Ierrod’s defenders are ensorcelled to "urn

for all eternity. The forests are dark and rank with the smell of decay. *t is a custom of (hao )ahn tosend the defeated souls of his enemies into the "odies of trees, where they moan in agony through

fearsome faces carved into the "oles. 3reat =agged chasms have opened across the surface of the world

which can only "e crossed "y thin "ridges supported "y magic. To fall from these spans is certain

death. The climate in the utworld is e4aggerated, depending on the terrain. &eserts glow with heat, and in

many places the top layer of sand has fused into a thin coat of glass. $orests are dark and humid places,

where huge "lack "irds flap clumsily through "arren "ranches. (torms scuttle across plains, dumpingmonsoon#like rain and hail on the sickly crops. *n the far reaches, glaciers loom over oceans of "lack

fire, free'ing everything. ountainous areas trem"le with volcanic activity: choking soot isomnipresent. o matter where a traveller may go in the utworld, the air always smells vaguely ofsulphur and charred meat.

At the center of the utworld is the grand palace of (hao )ahn, a magnificent edifice standing in a

plain of eternal flame. The palace is "uilt in a style reminiscent of ancient !oman and Egyptianarchitecture, and includes an enormous courtyard#arena at its center. There )ahn 7and an audience of

thousands8 may watch, or even participate in, kom"ats. )ahn usually leaves pu"lic kom"ats to his

#< A REALM IN6ADED

The first phase of the utworld invasion was over within moments, with LL of the souls of
