FIND YOUR WAYThere are hundreds of ways to discover the Mornington Peninsula. And, with just a little

help from us, you’ll find your own unique way. Maybe it’s tippling and tasting on the Wine

Food Farmgate trail. Slipping into slow mode in a spa. Diving to the depths of the ocean or surfing the tree tops. Walking beaches, wandering villages, watching wildlife. Just

come and find your way.

Highways all the way

All roads lead to the Mornington

Peninsula …you’ll be here in just an hour.

You could easily spend days exploring this trail, with its orchards, vineyards, chef ’s hat restaurants, cool cafés, cooking classes and more than 50 cellar doors. Breweries, distilleries and cideries are expanding the drinks list too, with a distinctive regional twist.

Other trails criss-cross the Mornington Peninsula: horse rides wind their way around bridle trails, cyclists hit mountain bike and bitumen trails, walkers tackle the 100km Mornington Peninsula Walk, art lovers follow the coastal arts trail.

And if you’re loving the fresh maritime air, there are plenty more ways to enjoy it. Tee off on some of Australia’s top

golf courses, walk dramatic cliff tops or stroll through award-winning sculpture parks and historic gardens.

The water’s so fresh and clear too – you can revel with seals and dolphins, kayak along a coastline or hook your own catch of the day.

At dusk, it ’s time to slip into naturally heated mineral waters. Float in a private outdoor pool sculpted from local limestone, or luxuriate in a hilltop pool and watch stars emerge in the sky.

DAYBREAK TO DUSK DISCOVERIESSip an early morning coffee from local roasters and plan your day. If you’re up with the birds and want a unique wildlife experience, find your way to Greens Bush where kangaroos feed in the wild at dawn. Then it’s time to stock up on your own provisions: follow the Wine Food Farmgate trail and discover a busy local market, a gourmet village store or a farmgate selling just-picked produce.

way of life that’s delightfully lazy and full of unexpected finds.

Home is where the art is…Mornington, Red Hill, Mt Eliza, Sorrento and Flinders have your style.

If you’re into vintage and antiques or love the quaint and quirky, Tyabb is your kind of town. Marvellous markets dotted around the Peninsula are the best places to unearth handmade treasures, along with super-fresh produce. Standouts are Red Hill’s monthly market (spring to autumn) and the Wednesday Main Street market which stretches almost a kilometre in Mornington.

The big food and wine focus is up in the hinterland, especially around Red Hill and Main Ridge. You can tick off fine dining restaurants, gourmet stores, farmgates, olive groves and tipples from breweries, distilleries, cideries and cellar doors.

Then there’s the continuous shopping spree right along Port Phillip Bay, from Frankston through Mt Eliza, Mornington and Mt Martha, to the family villages of Dromana, McCrae, Rosebud and Rye. Sorrento is serious sophistication, then you can relax with a drink at the end of the day at Portsea and the Peninsula’s most famous beachside hotel.

Next day, drive over to Western Port Bay: Balnarring and Merricks are edged with vineyards and boast lots of local produce, and Flinders makes its mark for dining, boutiques and antiques.

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW Around 30 villages with traditional main streets and little retail squares reveal your kind of shopping…cafés with cred, boutiques with style, artists’ studios and galleries, food stores packed to the rafters with local produce.

Then there are the galleries and studios where you can watch artists at work – including world class glass blowers and ceramicists. Check out the fine art exhibitions, wander around outdoor sculptures and fossick in markets for local crafts.

The history is just as absorbing, as Victoria’s first European settlement was established near Sorrento in 1803. Many strands of this story are woven together by tiny museums, simple heritage homes and richly furnished mansions.

Two of the Peninsula’s most famous heritage features are best combined with fabulous coastal walks: the military installations and the old Quarantine Station in Point Nepean National Park, and the maritime history of the 1859 Cape Schanck Lightstation.

LOOK, LAUGH, LEARN AND LISTENYou’ll find an event calendar that can get as busy as a pop diva’s diary. Summer sand sculpting and carnivals, garden tours, art and cooking just for kids, sports events, theatre, music and twilight markets. And it’s just as busy along the Wine Food Farmgate trail, with a Pinot Noir celebration, regular cooking classes, wine dinners and picnic race meetings.

A neat package

Have we got a deal for you!

Golf touring with accommodation,

horse riding with hot springs, or a

beach ride followed by lunch.

Entertaining the kids on the Mornington Peninsula is also very easy. Let ‘em loose in adventure gardens, treat them to a pony ride and introduce them to super cute baby farm animals. There’s mini golf, tree surfing, a new gondola ride at Arthurs Seat, the annual sand sculpting exhibition on Frankston waterfront and some very puzzling mazes in huge historic gardens.

These gardens put on a show right through the year, with blossoms and bulbs in spring, acres of rose gardens in summer and hills of lavender flowering year-round. Garden cafés are the best spot to admire it all.

Ever been horse riding? If not, this is the perfect place to learn. There are rides through native bushlands, over the sand dunes to a dramatic ocean beach, all-day excursions for experienced riders and romantic twilight rides along the beach.

Just after twilight, take a lantern-lit tour of endangered wildlife that emerges only after the sun goes down. Daytime highlights include little wallabies that love to be handfed, and many rare Australian creatures.

GREAT IDEAS FOR THE GREAT OUTDOORSWith magnificent landscapes to explore and the sea almost surrounding us, the Mornington Peninsula has about as much adventure as you can take. Discover a wealth of fun activities and attractions for everyone to enjoy.

DID YOU KNOW?You’d never catch an ostrich – they can run up to 70km per hour! Another fun fact: guinea pigs are born fully developed.

‘A’ = ACTION, ANIMALS AND ADVENTURES!Three things kids can’t resist: farm animals, an adventure park and fun activities. So let The Big Goose take your little brood under its wing.

If kids are having fun, parents are happy. Particularly if they can relax with a coffee while the kids explore the petting barn, tackle the tyre maze or hit the adventure playground. And if the mini golf, tractor rides and pony rides don’t exhaust them, the giant jumping pillow certainly will.

The Big Goose specialises in hands-on experiences and excitement. Kids are encouraged to learn how to handle and feed guinea pigs, chickens, baby goats and lambs. When they take a tractor ride, there’s a close up view of cows, camels, ostriches, goats and many more animals in their natural environment. Pony rides led by staff are safe and fun, and exclusive animal encounters are a special treat.

GET MUDDLED IN THE MAZEThe tyre maze is one of the biggest in Victoria, and it’s a challenge for sharp little minds. Mini golf is fun, as well as a test for hand-eye coordination over 18 holes of easy to moderate play. The adventure playground is packed with action, including three slides, a rock climbing wall, speed boat, a truck with operational windows and steering wheel, sandpit and cubby house. And the colourful, trampoline-like jumping pillow is guaranteed to keep kids entertained for as long as their energy lasts.

Naturally, this is a great place for a kids’ party, as there’s a party room, all the entertainment of the park plus tours to see all the animals.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Mornington Peninsula

has long been a muse…take

the Sorrento-Portsea Artists’

Trail or the Coastal Arts

Discovery Trail at Frankston.

Clifftop rambles and country lanes Super fit and want a challenge? Take the 100km Mornington Peninsula Walk through the countryside and along the coast. Love history? There are the dramatic wartime relics of Point Nepean to explore on foot, while Cape Schanck has one of Victoria’s oldest light stations perched high above Bass Strait.

Inland, it’s all green, quiet and shady, with bird-filled wetlands and grand gardens. And you can walk-and-shuttle between wineries. End the day with a walk at Arthurs Seat, the Peninsula’s highest point, with bays curving right along the coastline below you. (If you stay on till evening, the villages become part of a huge patchwork of pretty lights.)

Trail tacticsHire a bike, and you never know who you’ll meet: fellow cyclists, walkers, horse riders, runners or locals walking their dogs.

There’s lots to discover, including little villages, local history, famous old bathing boxes, bushlands and seascapes. Mountain bikers love the Red Hill to Merricks rail trail, cyclists spin along the 17 km Bay Trail from Dromana to Sorrento or the 26 km Western Port Bay Trail from Somerville to Balnarring.

CLIFFTOP RAMBLES AND COUNTRY LANES If ever a region was made for walking, it’s the Mornington Peninsula. Take a beach stroll along a white sandy beach on Port Phillip Bay, or brave the breezes and wild surf along an ocean beach. Up on the cliffs, walking tracks bring the bonus of spectacular views, especially around Sorrento and Portsea.

From coast to coast

Just across Port Phillip Bay is

historic Queenscliff. Pop over for a

day visit from Sorrento – the ferries

run every hour, on the hour.

Scuba divers have the ultimate experience: diving along steep walls, shallow reefs and some of the 60 shipwrecks that have gone down since the 19th century. Snorkellers have just as much fun, with the 200m Octopuses’ Garden Trail at Rye pier. Weedy sea dragons are the main attraction, but watch for pygmy seahorses hiding in the seaweed, octopuses in the sand, as well as sponges, sea stars, fish and rays.

There’s just as much action on top of the water – ever been sea kayaking, stand up paddle boarding or

wakeboarding? Instructors are ready and waiting, and there are sea kayaking tours to the dolphin sanctuary off Point Nepean National Park.

Port Phillip is renowned for fishing, so come and hook your own ‘catch of the day’. There are enough varieties here to make a seafood chef go misty eyed… King George whiting, snapper, shark, garfish, calamari, flathead and more. Just make sure you’ve got a bottle of Mornington Peninsula wine nicely chilled.

SPLASH OUT ON AQUATIC ADVENTURESPort Phillip is one big adventure that’s just waiting to happen. So come and meet your new playmates: the wild bottlenose dolphins and the fur seals that provide endless entertainment when you snorkel down to join them. Operators provide all the gear you need, along with comfortable boats for non-snorkelling partners.

OPEN YOUR EYES TO ANOTHER WORLD

The antics of fur seals and bottle nose dolphins are legendary, and snorkelling amongst them in the pristine waters of Port Phillip is the best way of exploring their world. The family-owned Polperro business has been operating the same classic wooden boat for 30 years, so these wild creatures feel comfortable being around it.

All snorkelling gear is provided on daily tours. Non-swimmers have a great view of the action from Polperro’s deck and can learn about the marine environment and conservation from the experienced, qualified crew.

Open your eyes to the wonders down under in Port Phillip, where generations of wild dolphins and seals have swum with Polperro for 30 years.

Freshly caught fish and a bottle of Mornington Peninsula wine are the perfect end to a family-and-friends fishing day. Timeout take up to 12 novice and experienced anglers for 4-hour morning and afternoon trips on their new 11m boat, with twilight trips over the Christmas holidays.

Senior citizens, kids as young as five and all ages in between will be kitted out with rods and given expert angling tips as ‘Bojangles’ captain Peter heads out for the most productive fishing grounds. Excursions are relaxing, with light refreshments included.

CROSSING THE BAY IN 40 MINUTES OF FUNThe scenery is spectacular, but it’s the unexpected sights such as playful dolphins or whales in winter that add even more fun to Searoad Ferries’ trips across Port Phillip.

The 40-minute crossing between historic Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula and Queenscliff near the Great Ocean Road is the start of a great day trip. Ferries run on the hour, every hour from 7am to 6pm daily, so there’s plenty of time to explore Queenscliff ’s Victorian-era streetscapes before returning to Sorrento.

The trip features views of the multi-million dollar clifftop mansions of Portsea, the dramatic coastline of Point Nepean National Park, the vicious Rip that claimed many ships in the 19th century and the war-time fortifications of Queenscliff. There are often sightings of wild bottlenose dolphins which love to frolic near the ferries and, in winter, migrating whales are sometimes seen in the Bay.

ARE WE THERE YET?The large ferries are designed to keep everyone happy, with a children’s play area and colouring corner, binoculars for dolphin and whale spotting, a licensed café with a barista on every sailing, comfortable lounges with huge viewing windows, lift access and plenty of deck space with seating for sunny days. Relax and sip on a regional wine, cider or ale as the magical scenery slides by.

Searoad Ferries take cars as well as foot passengers, so for visitors heading to or from the Great Ocean Road, this is a relaxing alternative to the 200km drive right around the bay.

Did You Know?

That local Shiraz grapes can be

transformed into a luxurious

antioxidant balm, which is

applied during a soothing and

calming massage.

Treatments at day spas certainly fall into the miraculous category. Just an hour of body bliss is all it takes, with therapists using western, eastern and Aboriginal massage techniques. Add a facial and foot treatment, scrubs, masks and wraps with organic ingredients, and you’re well on the way to a new you.

Outdoors you’ll find a choice of mineral water pools, warm water exercise classes and yoga. Then there’s a reflexology walk, Turkish steam bath, underground sauna, hand and foot baths and cold plunge pools.

If boosting your wellbeing involves a little more exertion, think bush walks, cycle trails, golf courses, horse rides, surf breaks and aquatic adventures.

Feeling better already?

IT’S BODY BLISSYou’ll find quite a few miracle workers on the Mornington Peninsula. A walk on a deserted beach, with the rhythm of the waves and fresh sea air, is one. So is the naturally heated mineral water which flows into private spa pools. Just lie back, let go and put life on hold for a bit.

WORLD’S ‘BEST MINERAL SPRINGS SPA’ WINNERMore than 20 globally-inspired bathing experiences set in a beautiful natural environment have won Peninsula Hot Springs the Worlds Best Mineral Springs Award in 2014,2015 & 2016

Peninsula Hot Springs grew from the vision of founder Charles Davidson, who spent more than 10 years searching for naturally heated spring waters near Rye after discovering Japan’s outdoor hot springs during a snowy winter.

And the World Luxury Spa Awards say he’s created a global winner. While influenced by the best international spa traditions, Peninsula Hot Springs is true to its own natural environment. Subtle landscaping follows the natural contours of sand dunes, and healing hot water cascades down the hillside through bathing pools to a lake.

There’s the magic of sunrise or sunset from a hilltop pool with 360° views to local landmarks and across the bay to Queenscliff. Natural thermal pools are sculpted from local limestone, framed by indigenous vegetation and softly lit at night.

Charles Davidson has also captured more than 20 of the world’s best experiences in the social Bath House including hydrojet pool, a traditional Turkish hamam, reflexology walk, sauna and cold plunge pool.

In the luxurious Spa Dreaming Centre with its tranquil spaces and private pools, treatments embrace Indigenous practices and ‘Peninsula Senses’, a new range of exclusive products featuring local botanicals and ingredients including Manuka honey.

Two dining options complete your spa experience from early morning to early evening: the Spa Dreaming Centre Café and the Bath House Café.

Like father, like son…and daughter. Garry Crittenden founded his first vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula in 1982, and became an Australian pioneer in Italian wine varieties. Siblings Rollo and Zoe Crittenden were early adopters of the enticing styles of regional Spain, but the

family maintains its tradition of fine French varietals including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their latest innovation is an impressive new Wine Centre, where visitors sit in comfort and choose a ‘flight’ of five wines from the wine menu, guided by knowledgeable staff.

SCULPTURE, FOOD, WINE, GARDENS AND WETLANDSMontalto Vineyard and Olive Grove reflects the finer things in life: food, wine, sculpture collection, olive groves, kitchen gardens, wetlands and secluded spots for private picnics.

John and Wendy Mitchell and their daughter Heidi have, in little more than a decade, created a beautiful and bountiful estate. It’s so generously shared with visitors that it’s sometimes difficult to know where to start...

A glass of Montalto wine and meal in the casual outdoor Piazza Café or in the much-awarded restaurant? A stroll between the vines to the wetlands? A wander through the permanent sculpture collection of 25 works, or around the abundant kitchen garden which supplies fresh produce for the chef?

The Mitchells want visitors to feel rewarded for time shared, so it’s best to allow a few hours here. Wendy’s

produce gardens cover two acres, with vegetables, herbs and an orchard. Any excess is transformed into

the Pantry Range which, along with olives, olive oil and Montalto’s fine wines, is sold at the cellar door.

WHITE TABLECLOTH PRIVATE PICNICSThe sculpture collection has grown from the acquisitive Montalto Sculpture Prize, launched in 2003, with works displayed throughout the estate. Also dotted around the estate are five secluded spots where sumptuous private summer picnics can be booked.

But probably the best place to take in all that is Montalto is through the glass walls in the restaurant, with their rural view of vines, olive groves, sculpture, wetlands, pastures and a glimpse of the ocean.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FOCUS

Founded in 1978 by Brian Stonier and his family, this pioneering winery has never wavered from its much-rewarded obsession for outstanding cool climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sparkling wines. There is minimal intervention in the vineyard and the winery, resulting in distinctive wines defined by their site. Designed

by renowned Melbourne architect Daryl Jackson, the combined cellar door and winery enables visitors to sample wine (including some outstanding single vineyard releases), enjoy local produce platters and watch the workings of the winery.

Thirty seven years is a long time to explore two varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. But the accolades certainly justify Stonier’s focus.

After moving to a farm on the Mornington Peninsula 25 years ago, John Winkels discovered two feral beehives. It was the start of his hobby as an apiarist, which grew into a full time business at Pure Peninsula Honey.

There’s a bee-themed gift shop with a huge range of cold extracted honey, honey straws, honey cider, honeycomb, cosmetics made from Manuka honey, candles and free honey tastings. And there’s honey ice cream to enjoy while watching bees at work behind a glass beehive as they build honeycomb, collect pollen and produce honey.

HOW SWEET IT ISThe bees at Pure Peninsula Honey are very busy indeed, creating 20 varieties of honey plus bees wax candles, cosmetics, honey ice cream and more.
