BANDON — Brenda Brainard, director of Native Studies in Eugene, returns to the Bandon Public Library for three days in October.

At 3 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25, Brainard will share tradi-tional native storytelling at the library. Enjoy her myths and origin stories.

Brainard's workshops are popular, as she offers hands-on instruction of traditional creations in small group settings. Many of the materials used are harvested and prepped by hand by Brainard months in advance.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, the public is invited to create a traditional cedar doll. Choose unique styles and colors using raffia, strawtex and yarn for weaving the clothes. The finished doll is 7 inches tall.

The materials cost is $40.From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, Brainard will

lead a cedar basket weaving workshop. This is a free-form basket using wire and cedar and is 7 inches tall. The materials cost is $55.

Spend a day with Brainard in a small group and enjoy the process of creation. The basket and the doll are perfect to gift or keep.

Register in advance at the Bandon Public Library or by calling 541-347-3221. Each workshop is small so those interested are advised to register soon.

"We hope you'll join us for these special events," said assistant librarian Sara Michael.

BANDON - The Bandon High School Leadership Class will hold an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The blood drive will take place at the Bandon

High School gym on Ninth Street SW, located direct-

ly across from Harbor Lights Middle School.

Walk-ins from the community are encouraged.

Red Cross Blood Drive at BHS gym on Oct. 9

The event raises funds for the Quarterly Art Shows at Bandon's Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center. Organizers are seeking donations of art for the fund-raiser. Canvasses (12-inch by 12-inch) are available at no charge at Second Street Gallery, 210 Second St. SE in Old Town. The deadline to drop off finished can-vasses is Saturday, Oct. 26, at Second Street Gallery or by arrangement with Ava Richey (541-297-6118) or Susan Lehman (541-347-9888), art organizers for the event.

This year’s theme is the “Healing Power of Art” which reflects the shared understanding that art helps the community heal and feel comfortable at Southern Coos Hospital. As healing often takes place when people are happy, comfortable or engaged, artists are encouraged to use the following guidelines in creating art: What in your life makes you feel happy, or excited to be alive? Whether it’s a favorite object, or a beautiful sunset, a child, a pet, food, cup of coffee, create a piece of art that depicts something you love to enjoy.

The Art for Health fundraiser will include refresh-

ments and music. Purchasers of tickets will be awarded a donated painting via a raffle. There will be a silent auction and guest artists will speak on the benefits of art in general and specifically to the healing value of art displayed in a hospital setting. Tickets cost $35 each or two for $60.

Artists who participate will receive one free ticket to attend the fundraiser event in return for each piece of artwork donated. Artists must purchase a regular $35 ticket if interested in receiving a donated painting. Paintings that are not given away at the fundraiser will be featured for sale at the hospital in the January-March 2020 show, with sales to be donated to the SCHC Foundation Art Fund.

The Southern Coos Health Foundation helps fund the quarterly exhibitions that entertain and uplift the patients, staff and general public on a daily basis. These shows give area local artists a place to show and sell their art. Currently there are no entry fees and no sales commission fees to the artist.

BANDON — “Where were you in ’62?” is the key question for an event at the Bandon Historical Society Museum.

Anyone who was on the West Coast has a story to share about the 1962 Columbus Day storm. Those who weren’t will have a chance to learn about the worst windstorm to hit the West Coast in recorded history at a museum program Saturday, Oct. 12.

The program will begin at 2 p.m. and admission is free courtesy of Five J Cranberry Farms.

Bandon Mayor Mary Schamehorn will lead the program. She photographed and reported on the 1962 storm as a reporter for the Western World.

Officially named Typhoon Freda, “The storm out-ranks all other natural disasters in the state in terms of

destruction and cost,” according to the Oregon Encyclopedia. A wind gust of 145 miles-per-hour was recorded at Cape Blanco before the wind gauge blew away.

Audience members will be invited to share their stories.

“I’ll bet there are some good photographs of storm damage out there,” said volunteer Jim Proehl. “Maybe people will use this as an occasion to dig out some old photos.”

“We want people to remember that this program is on the real Columbus Day, Saturday, Oct. 12, not the Monday holiday,” said Museum Director Gayle Nix.

Bandon’s museum is located at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Fillmore Avenue.

BANDON — “It’s a chance for people to see our museum in a different light,” said Gayle Nix, director of the Bandon Historical Society Museum.

“The Night at the Museum,” a ticketed after-hours social, will take place at the museum from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.

A limited number of tickets are on sale at the museum for $10. Tickets will be available at the door if supplies last.

The event is sponsored by Robin and Geneva Miller and organized by Lori Osborne of The Beverage Barn.

“We know a lot of people with 9 to 5 jobs have a hard time visiting during our 10 to 4 hours,” said Nix.

“We’ve put together an after-hours event that’s both a social time and a time to talk about history and will raise a little money for us.”

The event will combine a social mixer with his-torical conversation and complimentary snacks and beverages.

“Often, our program format is a speaker talking to an audience, but this is a little different. This will be more like the discussion after the speech, but without the speech. And there will be tasty snacks and adult beverages,” said museum board member Jim Proehl.

The museum is located at the corner of U.S. Highway 101 and Fillmore Avenue.

BANDON — She’s coming to Bandon, riding on the winds with her magic umbrella, Mary Poppins. She’s on the lookout for those children who haven’t learned the lessons of charity and responsibility. Meet her in person at the Sprague Community Theater in City Park in Bandon when New Artists Productions presents "Mary Poppins Jr."

A cast of 43 young actors from the South Coast — from Reedsport to Brookings and cities in between invite their audiences to London to witness Mary Poppins, who will be here along with all the well-known favorite characters.

Audience members also will be treated to a new and rising star who has only recently joined New Artists Productions, Abby Wilson. Abby was discovered during the production of “Lion King Junior” where she played an inquisitive hyena. She auditioned for the part of Mary Poppins, surprising everyone with her vocal abilities.

“It’s always exciting to discover a new and natural talent,” said Dan Almich, who with his wife Anita, is directing and producing the play.

"Mary Poppins, Jr." tells the tale of a magical English nanny, who is blown in by an east wind to reveal

to the Banks family the joy and harmony that is over-looked by their day to day activities.

This two-act production is based on a series of chil-dren’s books written by P.L. Travers and the 1964 classic Walt Disney film of the same title.

“The cast members have put their hearts, souls, and nine months of their time into this performance,” said Dan Almich. “Several members have taken voice and dance lessons to help solidify their presentations and to master their performances. We couldn’t be more proud to have this cast presenting the play.”

“Mary Poppins Jr.” will be presented at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW in Bandon City Park beginning Friday, Oct. 18 and running two week-ends through Oct. 27. Show times are 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are also available at Bandon True Value and Bandon Mercantile and cost $10 general admission, $8 for senior citizens, and $5 for students and children (K-12).

For more information, call the Almichs at 541-347-2517.

"We are the only food bank in the Coquille area that provides grocery style boxes full of dry, refrigerated and frozen food on a monthly basis as well as fresh produce, bread and pastries on a weekly basis," McSherry said. "Clothing is also available for the whole family every week. Please help us keep our citizens warm and dry this winter."
