Similar, but not the same

Every Morgan is hand built by cra smen and women in

rural England, exactly to customer requirements.

This means that no two Morgans are exactly the same.

Each car expresses its owner’s unique requirements

and taste, right down to the colour of the carpets.

This has been the Morgan tradi on for more than a

century. It is also worth no ng that Morgan is not

only the oldest, but also the largest Bri sh owned car

This means that the Morgan ownership experience

On the +4 front this month, I have been trying to trace an annoying knocking noise from the back of the car for a couple of months. After many inspections on the hoist, a systematic tightening of anything that looked like a nut or bolt and with levers looking for movement, I eventually realised that the rear leaf springs had sagged sufficiently to allow the spring hangers to make contact with the chassis rail. The springs are now at the spring works being reset. We will see what difference that makes.

Last month I mentioned that the Wagner car recently acquired by Jeff Price and the John Hurst car were Super Sports. I stand corrected they were a pair of high line +4’s imported by Ken Ward in 1960.

As an irrelevant matter of interest my former 1967 +4 (rego ESD 655) was the last one imported into Australia as a new car. It and the 4/4 (rego ESD 673) of John St. Julian, now in the possession of David St. Julian were also imported as a pair.

The photo of a single seater Morgan on Page 5 last month turned out to be the 1936 series I 4/4 of Jim Boughton. Thanks to John Merton, John Hurst and Tony Heard for their information. The Diamond Muster in Bathurst is approaching and the

Organising Committee have released the special Muster Regalia range. See Pages 12 and 13 and get your orders in. Regalia will not be available for sale at the Muster.

The fascinating story of a suitcase found in a rubbish skip in Liverpool, England, and the connection with a Morgan MX4 in Australia will be unveiled over the coming months.

The story of what appears to be a sister car to the Ken Ward twin cam 4/4 is also revealed. My thanks go to Ross Simpson and Noel Bryen for their information.

The front cover this month is a study in contrast. John Moss sent the photo of the Beauty and the Beast.

The Beauty is John’s standard specification 1969 +8, 920kg, 185bhp, and usually does around 11.5 litres/100km.

The Beast is a Komatsu PC4000, weighs 388 tonne (without attachments), V16 engine producing 1875hp and drinks diesel at 168 litres/hr when working. The long arm on the ground is a McMahon invention called the “donger” and is 29 metres long and weighs 31 tonne. The Beast is currently in action demolishing the Port Augusta power station in South Australia.

PRESIDENTIAL PONDERINGS Geoff Hollings

Well it has been a very busy time with the registrations for the Diamond Muster. At the end of the first week in May, the Club has received 70 registrations covering 124 people bringing 69 Morgans. There are Morganeers from all states as well as NZ and UK. In addition there are 24 others who have let me know they plan to register, so it adds up to around 170 people attending so far. Once your payment has been credited to the MOCA bank account and I have received your registration, I will confirm the registration by email.

It’s going to be a great event, so if you have not yet registered, please book your accommodation and send your registration ASAP to me at our special email address [email protected]

During the month I attended a car cleaning and polishing workshop run by Car Care Products at Leichhardt. The first stage was snowfoam then washing using two

buckets; the second stage was claying; third stage was polishing/cleaning using an orbital polisher – one or two of the light, medium or heavy cut depending on the condition; fourth stage was protecting with wax or a sealant. My Prado was chosen as car most in need of some TLC by the trainer, so everyone practised the claying and orbital polisher on the bonnet, now looking very pristine. So now I have to do some hard work on the rest, then on to the Mogs!

At the last meeting there was discussion about the CTP insurance refund in NSW. I logged onto the Services NSW website and found our cars listed. It proved to be a very easy process. Remember it can only be done at night or on weekends when the system has spare capacity because it’s not being used by the RMS for its normal work. Gary Higgins mentioned at the meeting that the refund scheme only applies to cars and not to motor bikes.

The next display day is later in this year on September 23. Robin Sanders has purchased 20 tickets and they will be available at the July meeting. There will be a sign on sheet at the next meeting. For those of you that do not attend Robin can be contacted on [email protected] or 94523925

The result of last year was very pleasing. Because of the increase in the cost of tickets ABCC made a profit of $15,500, with $3000 going to the school to help defray the public liability cost believed to $8000. The rest was given to three charities, $6000 to Arthritis Association, $6000 to Prostate Cancer and $500 to Marine Rescue

THE HARRY WARLOW-DAVIES SUITCASE STORY

(PART 1) Tim Shellshear (President)VSCCA)

Harry Warlow-Davies was a member of VSCCA in the late 1940’s and competed in a Morgan three wheeler.

The story of the discovery of Harry’s battered wooden suitcase and the subsequent events are revealed by Tim Shellshear.

We are indebted to Tim Shellshear and the VSCCA for the information which will be revealed over the coming months.

This fascinating story began on 28th July 2015 with the following email addressed to the VSCCA from the RAAF Association:

Good afternoon gentlemen,

My name is Carol Moreau and I am the Executive Officer of the RAAF Association (NSW Division).

We have received an old wooden suitcase found in a dumpster at Liverpool with some interesting items but unfortunately no name/s or address/s that are current.

In fact it dates back to 1947.

There is a 1947 Mountain Trial, Under 1100 cc Class trophy with the name H. Warlow-Davies on it as well as an ASCC silver mug engraved with: Experts Trial 17th – 18th January 1948, Second Class Award, H Warlow-Davies.

There is his Pilot’s licence and log books, several certificates of achievement. He was a World War II pilot awarded the 1939-45 Pacific Star, 1939-45 Star, Australian Service Medal 1939-45.

I realise it is a long shot but I’ve just about exhausted every other avenue I can think of to try to maybe find a descendant of this gentleman and pass on his mementos.

If you have any records of this gentleman and maybe some later information that may help locate someone who would be interested in his mementos I would appreciate it.

Regards, Carol Moreau Executive Officer RAAF Association (NSW Division) Inc. P: (02) 9393 3485 E: [email protected]

This email was of considerable interest as I had previously read of Harry Warlow-Davies’s tragic death in an air crash in 1948 and I had also discussed his case with early VSCCA member Ron Heine who had clear recollections of Harry in his time in the VSCCA.

Partly what made the crash so tragic was that Harry, at the young age of 27, left not only a young widow, but their first child only three weeks old. I immediately replied to Carol Moreau as follows:

Hello Carol

What a fascinating discovery and in a rubbish dumpster of all places. Harry Warlow-Davies was certainly one of the early members of the VSCCA and actively participated in many early events including those of the Australian Sporting Car Club (ASCC). I will look up the details, but I think off hand that he was killed in a plane crash in about 1948 leaving a wife and infant son. I do know that he was a friend of one of the early members, Ron Heine, who I am still friendly with today. In fact we have discussed Harry on a number of occasions as he drove a three wheeled Morgan in events.

The contents of the suitcase are naturally of great interest to the club and if a descendant can’t be found then you might consider giving the trophies and other contents to the club archives which we treasure most carefully. A number of early trophies have come back to us in recent years.

I will come back to you tomorrow with some more details.

Kind regards Tim Shellshear President VSCCA

I then sent Carol’s email off to the VSCCA Committee as follows:

Hi Committee

The whole matter of Harry Warlow-Davies death is very poignant as is the final throwing out of the timber suitcase by some unknown person who clearly had kept it for probably most of their own life. It’s a shame we don’t know who threw it out. It will be interesting to see if any descendant can ever be found and I hope the RAAFA will keep us posted. I think there is a good story in this for our own magazine which I will try and write up.

I have done a bit more chasing this morning through the individual copies of the early Vintage Car and attach two more documents. Harry joined the Club in Feb 1947 as an Associate, but was soon recorded driving 30-98 and Lagonda Rapier. He lived at 42 Central Ave Mosman. He was elected assistant secretary in early 48 and the general references to him show a man of unusual popularity. I note that Brian Blacker was at one of the meetings that Harry moved a motion on so it is possible they knew each other briefly. An aspect of the poem is that the Vauxhall was only 23 years old!

A fascinating matter to appear out of nowhere.

PS. You can see the great benefit of the scanned copies of the Vintage Car particularly the search facility.

Regards Tim

The poem referred to above was published in The Vintage Car in April 1947, soon after

“The Vintage Car” 28 April, 1947

“SHE IS OLD” with apologies to Lewis Carroll

“She is old, Father William” the young man cried, “And surely a beautiful sight But why do you keep the throttle so wide When you take out your Vaux. ‘ninety-eight?”

“in my youth” Father William replied to his son, “I feared it might shorten her life, But now that I know it cannot be done, I go for the lick of my life.”

“She is old” said the youth, “as I mentioned before’ And you’re rather running to fat, Yet you don’t seem to notice the lack of a door Pray, what is the reason for that?”

“in my youth” said the sage as he shook his grey locks “I kept all my limb ever supple, By making full use of the four speed crash box And keeping my feet on the throttle.”

“she is old” said the youth, “And her brakes are too weak For anything faster than thirty, Yet you often roar past with a Castrollised reek: It’s a wonder the Johns don’t get shirty.”

“In my youth”, said his father, “I respected the Law And always tried to be good, But still I was fined on occasions galore So no longer do as I should.”

“She is old”, said the youth, “one would hardly expect To find steering as steady as ever, But though I find there’s much I respect I still think the new jobs are clever.”

“I have answered your questions, and that is enough” Said his father, “Don’t make me laugh! Your aerodynamic and all that stuff Add up to a car like a bath!”

Harry joined the VSCCA as an Associate Member. At this stage Harry drove a new three wheel Morgan which he used to win the trophy contained in the suitcase.

The next step in this process was Carol Moreau’s email of July 29 below:

Good morning Tim,

Harry certainly sounds like an interesting gentleman who apparently never stood still. Once it has been decided where the suitcase and contents should go, either to the family or to your club for historical reference please let me know and I will arrange to get it delivered to you.

Regards Carol

On July 29, 2015 I emailed Carol again.

Hello Carol I am not sure I am reading your message quite correctly, but I take it you would be happy for us to continue the search for the

Warlow-Davies family and in the meantime have possession of the suitcase. In the event that we can’t find any descendants then the contents will be added to our own archives. One of our committee members last night, a practicing barrister, felt confident that using the resources of the legal world that he would be able to trace a descendant. I noted in a quick search of Trove this morning that some family background immediately became apparent, but it is of course a long time ago. I also noted that there are no Warlow-Davies listed in the white pages of Australia. Many factors could account for this such as Harry’s widow remarrying and taking a new name. He may have had no brothers to carry the family name on. So an interesting search.

If I have read your intention correctly we would be pleased to take delivery and you could send it to my home address at 55 Ballast Point Road Birchgrove.

Thanks you again for making the contact .

Kind regards Tim

And so after waiting what seemed quite a period I rang Carol and was advised that I could pick up the suitcase any time convenient to me.

On October 21, 2015 I went into the city to meet Carol Moreau at the high security Defence Plaza in Pitt Street, met Carol on the footpath outside, and was given possession of the suitcase.

Having got the case home I then carefully inspected it. The suitcase is quite small and although of battered appearance was quite sturdy and intact. The case appears very

home made with plywood top and bottom, quarter inch redwood sides nailed together with no dovetailing and, unusually, redwood bolection moulds forming the sides of the lid. Although timber suitcases were quite common around this period it has none of the finesse of the better made cedar cases.

The fact that the suitcase was full is remarkable given it was retrieved from a rubbish skip. Fate has played a very good hand in the preservation of this remarkable collection of Harry Warlow-Davies personal possessions. Inside the case the following items were stored:

Trophy from the VSCCA for best under 1100cc in the 1947 Mountain Trial.

Trophy from the ASCC for a second class award in the Experts Trial of January 1948

Rolled up oil painting of Harry Warlow-Davies on canvas

A seven page letter dated 18.7.49 from Harry’s father to an unknown person.

An extensive collection of contemporary newspaper cuttings from Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart newspapers.

It’s truly remarkable that this was all intact. So next step was to try and trace a related person to hand the suitcase back to. It always remained a possibility, although unlikely, that the suitcase had been thrown out by the family themselves as so much time had passed. This was just one of the possibilities that had to be eliminated

NEW SOUTH WALES CLUB RUNS

Kokoda Café Lunch David Lyon

For the April coffee run we headed to the Kokoda Trail in Rhodes Park, central Sydney, a location that is therefore more appropriate than the historic track in the jungles of PNG. In particular to the Café in Rhodes Park, where the commemorative path, with explanatory plaques recognising the exploits of former diggers, winds its way through lush vegetation, but where the humidity is bearable. This is a hidden gem well worth a visit for those unfortunate enough not able to attend.

Earlier enquiries had suggested that parking would be straight forward, but this advice hadn’t considered the impact of a visit from the local Triumph Owners Club to the same café, nor the plethora of Council vehicles supporting workmen madly sprucing up the park in advance of ANZAC Day.

Luckily the Café had plenty of seating and we all settled in quite easily. The staff in the Café was somewhat overwhelmed with so many customers;

however they managed to serve up a wide variety of sweet cakes, cooked platters and

plenty of coffee. We were not in any hurry so although it took some time to get service nobody was too concerned and as we managed to get our orders in early we got the better of the invasion of interlopers from that other club!

With the temperature turning autumnal Morgans outnumbered the tin tops for once, with seven cars and eighteen

Stonehouse Brew Café Jason Barker

Today’s run attracted 23 people and 12 Morgans to the Stonehouse Brew Café on the Wiseman’s Ferry Road at Maroota (about 65km from the city). The road up to Maroota is a lovely drive, especially on

such a beautiful day. The road is pretty good most of the way, but there are some bumpy patches. I think Graham Richards must have really liked the road a lot as we saw him drive past and test it out all the way down to Wiseman’s Ferry before doubling back!

The Café has a large parking area suitable for a nice row of shiny Morgans and a

sunny verandah around the large stone block walls of the building. Serving pizza as well as a range of other Café food, there was something for everyone. The discovery of the day was the Canoelands beer which is brewed nearby in (you guessed it) Canoelands and

served at the café. If only Louise had been able to come, I think I would have had a go at trying the whole range!

Back in 2014 U.K. Morgan owner Simon Ashby contacted MOCA seeking information on Ken Ward’s twin cam 4/4 as he was building a 4/4 with a Lotus twin cam to race and was looking for some “guidance” to replicate the Ken Ward car. The story of his build appeared in “The Morgan Ear” over a number of months.

Another twin-cam 4/4 has surfaced in Canada; this car was delivered to Mr. Andrew Duncan in the U.K. in April, 1967. The current owner has been in contact with Ross Simpson seeking some information about the Ward car which he thought may be similar.

In the process of corresponding with Dan Brown of Canada Ross made contact with Simon Ashby and we are able to continue the story of his twin-cam 4/4.

“Hello everyone. It was good to hear from you all and also reading the news and seeing the twin cam.

“My chassis number on my 4/4 is B998. It is a 1964 model with no vents in the top of the bonnet.

“I have had great success competing in our championship, nearly winning in 2016. Sadly my wife was taken by cancer and things just stopped. I have now just started competing again

“I have developed my car further over last winter and changed the twin came to a 1700 BDA! I still have the twin cam ready to put back when I want to or I may try and find another Chassis.

“Our scrutineers pulled me on the roll bar Noel and said it would only be OK if the car was pre 62! I ask you! Anyway I had to make a full hoop which spoils the look I

think. I set five hill-climb records in my class in 2016 which really pleased me.

“I did get tramping problems and still do a little even though I have fitted 4 tramp bars. I did change the cams and improved the exhaust breathing whilst developing it which made big difference. I would be interested to hear more news from you all and perhaps we can swap knowledge even though we are so far apart! I am only about 50 mins from the factory and have got to know the Aero racing guys well. I added a new ARP4 to my stable in 2016 which is great to drive but has to be driven hard. “Simon Ashby”

It transpires that the two cars were quite a bit

different. Ross Simpson sent Dan Brown copies of “The Morgan Ear” which contained information about the Ward and Ashby cars. As the email exchange between Ross and Dan and Noel Bryen demonstrates the history of the two cars is considerably different.

“Thanks again. From the articles, it appears that the Ward and Duncan cars were prepared quite a bit differently as I have the build info from Morgan and Duncan on the 1384 chassis from 1967 and some notes from Duncan on the set up in 1967 or so. Is Noel Bryen still a member of your group? It appears he may be the owner (or past owner) of Mr Wards car. Also, was the original aluminium bodied car destroyed and the twin cam

components transferred to a steel bodied car later? The 2006 article on Mr. Ward suggests that? Any light on that history would be appreciated.

Also, if anyone is interested I can send a summary on the 1384 chassis car.

“Thanks again for taking the time to send the information. It is really appreciated.

“Hi Noel

I managed to send Dan copies of The Ear that had the articles from Simon Ashby in the UK who contacted the club back in 2014 and subsequently built a 4/4 with a twin cam.

You may be able to help Dan more than I can.

It would make an additional inclusion in our club history once completed.

Have a good weekend.” Ross.”

many years ago that has all the detail but I don’t seem to have an electronic version now. I’ll keep looking. Basically, the twin cam started life as an aluminium bodied

1963 pushrod car (chassis B854) with the first 1500 engine (rather than 1340). Ken campaigned this for a few years and sold it to buy the Boronia Park servo in the mid-

1960s. He then bought another aluminium bodied 4/4 in ‘67 and asked the factory to fit a twin cam but they didn’t have any (they were all going into Lotus Elan production) and so it came out sans the engine and he fitted one here. He wrote the car off at Catalina in ‘67 and the chassis was cut in two as it went over the fence. He rebuilt it in a steel bodied car for a couple of years until he bought back the original aluminium bodied car from ‘63 when he widened

it to fit the six inch wheels etc. and that’s what I have now. It still has bits of grey trim from the ‘67 car and black trim from the ‘63 car. A bit like your grandfather’s axe. I

remember asking Ken about the ‘67 chassis but he can’t remember – probably went to the tip. I don’t know the chassis number from the ‘67 car but it is on the handwritten list that Col Davidson made from the factory records many years ago. I

have a copy of that here somewhere too. “Regards, Noel.”

April 17, 2018 “Hi Dan “Hope this helps, “Some of us Morgan members are meeting for coffee tomorrow and I will ask some of the older heads there if they have additional info “Best regards “Ross.”

April 18, 2018

“Ross and Noel,

“Thanks so much for the information. From what you have sent, it sounds like the Ward and Duncan 4/4s had a very similar history to start: factory alloy bodies, delivered without an engine and both 1967 vintage. In Duncan’s case after installing the engine, he returned it to Morgan and the factory documented that a Lotus engine was the original configuration. Apparently, Duncan was Peter Morgan’s personal lawyer; thus, had the connection to have the info put in the official record. They may even have been in the production line at the same time. The Duncan car has 1.5 inch wider fenders to fit the wider six inch wheels on the Cobra-style 72 spoke rims, as run in 1967, as well as a super sport style hood scoop fashioned at the factory to accommodate the twin webers.

Info from Duncan indicated that he had it delivered unpainted, without the cross bar behind the seats and actually raced it then without a roll bar! He also installed super sport style bucket seats in 1967. He indicated as well that he had upgraded the performance of the engine to about 144hp with a Burton head and cam. The transmission then was a Ford bullet type with a Wooler remote gear shifter. Presently, it is a Sierra/ Quaife straight cut 5 speed and dynoed at 144hp at 6500 rpm. “Thanks again for the additional info.

“Dan.”

DAN BROWN CONTINUES

THE STORY OF #1384

As many sturdy Morgans, this one has a colourful history.

The 1967 Morgan 4/4 Series V chassis # B1384 was dispatched by Morgan Motor Company to Mr. Andrew Duncan, Leigh Stinton, Malvern on April 29, 1967, as an unpainted body fitted with black PVC upholstery and without an engine or gearbox.

The factory build certificate issued by MMC states that the body was aluminium with modifications to the bonnet (i.e., super sports scoop), fitted with 72 spoke wire wheels and registered as DUY 2E. The MMC supplied chassis record shows on its factory service card that the vehicle was

Thanks to John Merton, John Hurst and Tony Heard who have supplied some information on the single-seater, open wheeler-Morgan in “The Morgan Ear” last month.

John Merton identified it as the 1936 Coventry Climax engined Jim Boughton racer.

The car is extensively covered in Craig Atkins’ book, “Morgans in Oz” and Jake Alderson’s “Morgan – The Early Years”. There are also several photos of the car in the John Medley book "Bathurst, The Cradle of Australian Motor Racing".

The single seater body shown in the photograph was fitted in 1939 and is papier-mâché over chicken wire, apparently not

an uncommon method of construction by privateer racers before World War II.

John Hurst added some further detail. The car, chassis #079, was shipped to Australia in 1936 and is quite an important car in Australian Morgan history. It was bodied in Melbourne with a fairly standard body but with front hinged doors. It was initially raced as a stripped car with the lights and mudguards removed and there are photos of it in this form being transported rather precariously to Lobethal and Bathurst on the tray of a Morris Commercial truck.

It competed at Rob Roy, Albury, Phillip Island, Bathurst and Lobethal in S.A. It was one of only two Morgans to compete in an Australian Grands Prix, these being 1938

and 1939! The other was the three-wheeler MX4 of Cec. Warren and was the only three-wheeler to compete in an AGP and the last car to carry a passenger in one.

In later years, such luminaries as Mike Devine, Phil McWhirter and Craig Schubert have owned the remains of the Morgan until Tony Heard rebuilt the car to its earlier stripped standard bodied form for Tony Parkinson, completing the superb job in 2010.

The car was subsequently offered for sale, however there was not enough interest (or funds) in Australia so it was returned to the U.K. The car was recently offered at Brand Hatch Morgans for around £70,000 sterling.

Bindoon Autumn Lunch Run

A beautiful as always, warm slightly overcast autumn Perth day. What a great place to live and even better in the company of clearly discerning friends for whom Morgan's are the car of choice.

The eight Morgans were those of Graham McCormack, Patrick and Lis Cooney, Andrew Neale and his neighbour, Brian & Marg Nash, Ian and Jill Merker, Len Taylor, Phil and Kathy Brown, Paul Larment and David Hughes and special dispensation because of a very long Morgan affinity to John and Sara Clarke in an Alfa tin top.

We gathered at Lake Monger drawing much interest from the local black Swan colony although I think the +8 exhaust notes scattered them as we left. True to form after the advertised departure time came Ian Merker's phone call saying his

car had refused to proceed after filling at the nearby petrol pumps. So with electronic wizardry, a photo of the run route and destination was taken and sent to his mobile phone.

The route took us north on our Mitchell Freeway at 100kph as far as Burns Beach Road then east towards the RAAF Pearce air base wending through mainstream suburbia and then semi-rural suburbs .

A few turns to get us past Pearce then into the Chittering Valleys fairly narrow winding roads snaking up through the Darling Range escarpment. We've used this route on many Morgan runs over the years but this was the brownest and driest ever seen and brings to mind our Australian poet Dorothy Mackellar, “I love a sunburnt country". It's not an easy route at weekends as is very popular with car and bike enthusiasts out for a run so very near misses are common as some cut too far across the bends but on a weekday it was

all ours.

The final leg of the run was on Great Northern Highway through Bindoon and five kilometres beyond to the Scottalian Hotel sitting all by itself surrounded by farmland on the side of the main highway to the north of our state.

An unusual name and location, the origin of which someone may be interested to research. We arrived just after noon unannounced, to find we were the only visitors.

The young man at the bar calmly served drinks and took 15 lunch orders from a humble yet interesting menu. We were told that as we were a group the chef would have them all ready to serve together rather than progressively. This worked well as Ian and Jill arrived soon after claiming battery connection problems which we're certain that Ian fixed with his ever reliable roadside fencing wire solution. Generous serves of tasty food and legal

volume drink topped off a fine day.

From exhausts to batteries to coils you can't go past fencing wire as Paul Larment found on his way home when his newly restored +8 stopped but was soon going again thanks to Ian "RAC" and fencing wire.

As part of McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic Festival our run on Sunday, April 22, was to Oxenberry Winery joining the Bolwell and Honda S200 clubs. The meeting point was the McLaren Vale Visitor Centre then on to the winery in convoy.

On arrival at the Winery, cars were placed in a line on the lawn and after looking at the assembled cars and meeting the other guests, we moved to our table.

The day started with a parade of Veteran, Vintage and Classic cars, five hundred of them. As the Winery is on the Parade route, we all moved to the edge of the road for a close-up view of the cars as they passed.

After the parade, it was back to the table for lunch, a few wines and a lot of Mog stuff.

Marcus and Rosalie came in the MG (Rosalie’s car) as the Morgan is getting a panel fixed, Nevin and Marillyn

Skurray came in their highly polished 4/4, the Karykis’s, Heards and the Heard’s friends, John and Marlene made up the group. John and Marlene came in the immaculate little Mini (Marlene’s car).

In the afternoon, some of the group moved on to Penny’s Hill Winery, meeting with more motoring enthusiasts, music and a demonstration of Tiger Moth aircraft flying overhead.

A great day was had and all left for home at various times.

fitted with Lotus engine number. K.3649-B139.

The build history is similar to the first known originally equipped Lotus twin cam Morgan of the late Ken Ward of Australia. He had the “Works” build an aluminium clad 4/4 that was delivered in 1967 without an engine. A twin cam was locally installed. Subsequent correspondence from the factory confirmed that MMC considered the car to be a “production” model. For a more detailed history the twin cam Morgan racing exploits see the Ken Ward tribute on the web site of the Morgan Owners Club of Australia. These two aluminium clad 4/4s are the only two Morgans ever produced with an originally equipped Lotus twin cam engine.

Copies of communication between Mr. A.G. Duncan and Thomas Hooker of Yorkhaven, Pennsylvania on November 24, 1992, confirms that Mr. Duncan equipped the 4/4 with a new, Roy T. Lane-supplied, Lotus twin cam that was the standard being used in the Lotus Elan (Series 3) at the time. The engine was rated at the standard 115bhp and was mated to a Ford “Rocket” close ratio gear box with a Wooller remote gear change.

The racing logbook of Mr. Duncan notes that 40 DCOE 18 Weber carburettors and Pirelli Cinturato 175X15 tyres were fitted. Mr Duncan also confirmed by email via Chas Smith, the 4/4 technical advisor for the Morgan Sports Car Club, in 2011 that the crossbar behind the seats was a factory “delete”. There was no roll bar, and he had factory Super Sport seats installed.

He painted the car blue originally but said it was “horrid” and it was quickly repainted orange. The car was upgraded between 1967 and 1971 with cams, big valves, higher compression and other improvements to a power output of about 145bhp.

Competition is documented from May 13, 1967 at Castle Combe by both Andrew and Mike Duncan to June 14, 1970, at Shelsley Walsh in copies of Andrew’s racing log book. Other venues included Curborough, Prescott, Wiscome Park and Gurston Downs.

Goodyear racing “low profile” tyres were fitted on September 10, 1967. On April 6, 1968, low profile Goodyear tyres on “Cobra” six inch 72-spoke wheels were fitted.

The car placed first in class at Prescott on April 7, 1968, and first on April 28 at Chedworth as well as first at Curborough on July 28, and Castle Combe on August 3, 1968. In 1970, the engine was rebuilt with big valves, ported and the head shaved to increase compression. One of the later entries in the log book lists DUY 2E as winning the class in the concourse competition at Prescott on June 7, 1970.

The car was transferred to Andrew’s brother Mike Duncan about 1971 and he appears to have campaigned it in England until about 1982 when it was sold to Thomas Hooker of Yorkhaven, Pennsylvania. After importing the car to the USA in 1981, Thomas Hooker notes the twin cam had Burton-supplied “BLL 14” camshafts. A Type 9 Sierra 5 speed “straight cut” gear box and aluminium bell housing supplied by Lotus Cortina Spares Centre, Crewkerne, was fitted in June

1999.

The car was subject to a complete re-build by Tom with all factory-supplied parts to showroom condition and won concourse competitions in 2004 and 2005.

Between 2005 and 2007, Lee Gaskin registered the car in South Carolina as an Antique Vehicle, Registration Number 7012.

“Super Dave” Bandon, of Berekely Lake, Georgia, USA purchased the car on October 11, 2007, and registered it in Georgia on December 22, 2007. The car was not registered for road use but appears to have used Georgia plate number HA2 JNN at some point.

It was meticulously refitted by Dave for vintage competition and rebuilt for the racing circuit. Many quality performance upgrades were added including an engine rebuild with D. Bean Engineering Sprint cams and a Neilson head by well-known engine builder Ted Wenz of Georgia. In racing form, it turned 150bhp with 11.5:1 compression using 110 octane fuel at about 8500 RPM and could do so “all day long” according to Dave. The car was inspected and approved for Vintage racing on November 12, 2008.

Dave competed in a number of races in 2009 and 2010 notably winning the all Morgan centenary race at Watkins Glen in 2009 and placing second at Virginia International Raceway to his daughter in a clone ’62 Morgan 4/4 twin cam which Stacey Schepens still successfully campaigns. Dave campaigned the car in a number of SVRA, HSR and VDCA events until the spring of 2011 when it was transferred to Dan Brown and refitted for street use.

The street conversion in 2011 started by Dave Bondon included refitting the wet sump oil pan, and other street running parts, refitting all chrome, lights, gas tank, instrumentation and interior as well as detuning the engine by lowering the compression to about 9.5:1 so it now turns 144bhp @ 6500 RPM and 130ft-lb torque at 4000 rpm on 92 octane street fuel.

It was shipped to Canada and registered in Manitoba on June 11, 2011, as GAB 577 and then reregistered as 67 MOG in April 2012.

It is now equipped with twin 45 mm Weber side draft carburettors, a Griffin aluminium radiator, Gemmer steering assembly, a dual circuit braking system as well as Spax adjustable shocks, panhard bar, vented oil catch tank and mild steel headers with a low restriction muffler and tail pipe. The Hoosier competition tires have now been replaced with Yokahama 195 x 60 15” tires, a Moto Lita replacement Mahogany steering wheel (Morgan Spares - supplied) to match the original solid mahogany dash is fitted, the roll bar removed and the vinyl interior was re-trimmed in August, 2012, in leather by John Baxter of Winnipeg to match the replacement (MMC-supplied) Super Sport seats.
