“According to the most current NCRAIS listing of nonindigenous aquatic species present in the Great Lakes, fifty-nine species are listed as having been introduced between 1975 and 2008. As mentioned earlier, forty of these species are listed as having been introduced through shipping activities or ballast water discharge. In addition, the methods of introduction for another seven species are simply unknown. Additional research indicates, however, that for two of these species, Neoergasilus japonicus and Megacyclops viridis,

ballast water is implicated.* When these species are added to the NCRAIS listing, it means that transoceanic ballast water is responsible for introducing forty-two of fifty-nine nonindigenous aquatic taxa to the Great Lakes during this thirty- three year period. The result of some of these introductions has been catastrophic for freshwater ecosystems throughout much of North America.

* As indicated by USGS NAS FactSheet Number 2723, Megacyclops viridis is found throughout the Holarctic but is considered to be a European native and its presence in the Great Lakes “is very likely” due to ballast water discharge. With respect to the presence of Neoergasilus japonicus, USGS FactSheet 2595 indicates that one of the ways this eastern European native could have been introduced to the Great Lakes is through ballast water exchange.” Excerpt from: Van Wormer, Jerry R. 2009. Dissecting an ecological disaster: Transoceanic ballast water and the Laurentian Great Lakes, 1953–2008. M.L.A. Thesis, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Pp. 108-109.
