pepper

By Phil LeRoy

Pepper, The Expendables and Passafire rocked the Kasbah at The Van’s Warped Tour at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland July 26. Each band’s Reggae-Rock style stood out among the plethora of screamo, emo and pop-punk bands that attracted all walks of life. It’s a different demographic for them for sure. To be honest it was mostly teeny boppers but hey, we’ve all been there. Having toured and partied together for the past decade, Pepper and The Expendables have garnered a similar fan base that love to have fun, ride the buzz, rock out and party. Passafire joined them for their first national tour a number of years ago and they haven’t looked back ever since. Will Kubley, bassist/vocalist for Passafire, couldn’t be happier. “It’s good to have our original clan back together,” Will said. “It’s always a pleasure to hang out with those bros… there’s a lot of bromance on the Van’s warped tour!” Will is definitely on point with the bromance. Interviewing Pepper’s vocalist/guitarist Kaleo Wassman, The Expendable’s vocalist/guitarist Geoff Weers and bassist/vocalist Ryan DeMars was like talking to any other dude. They just happen to be damn good at making music. Growing up in Santa Cruz surfing and skating was a recipe for success for the Expendables. “We kind

of just expressed our surroundings,” Ryan said. “We’d go to the beach all the time so of course I was going to write about being on the beach. It just translates to our music.”

With rigorous and mechanical touring comes little time to relax or dilly-dally. However, each band finds certain ways to blow off some steam, whether it’s going for a skate in the parking lot like Kaleo Wassman or cruising the respective venue on a bike like Will. The Expendables try to make the most of their time off. “Before we went on this tour we were off for 3 months so we definitely got some beach time in, got some bronzing in, got some surfing in and tried to keep it mel-low,” Geoff said. These guys couldn’t wish for a better gig. Being a musician has introduced them to cool people and different places around the world. “There aren’t too many jobs where you can find something like that,” Ryan said. “If I wasn’t playing music I’d probably be super bummed and want to kill myself…I couldn’t even imagine start-ing over on something new ‘like cool, I’m going to uh, I don’t know, start basket weaving, I don’t know? What do people do?’” He did mention maybe going back to the surf shop he used to work at in Santa Cruz where he always kept a stash of beer in the rental shed.

For Kaleo Wassman of Pepper, the only other substitute for playing music for a living would be surfing. “I don’t really see myself doing anything else, however there are other things I’d like to do, but I’m going to do everything possible with my life right now with the current opportunity that I have,” Kaleo said. “I think that’s really the goal,” Kaleo continued. “No matter what you’re occupa-tion is you should be happy in it.” Kaleo’s down to earth, live in the moment outlook on life stems from being born and bred in Hawaii. “We like to not take ourselves too seriously,” Kaleo said with a serious smirk on his face. “The ocean can explain that to you really well because if you take yourself too seriously and you think you’re all that, the ocean has a way to just humble you really quick.” Having traveled to the best and even the worst parts of the globe, Kaleo firmly believes that to fully appreciate coming from one of the most spectacular places on this planet (Hawaii) you have to “experience everything to find out what works for you.” Thankfully, Kaleo and the rest of Pepper have some good friends in New Jersey who know how to throw it down. “I love Jersey, we

just had a raging party there last night,” Kaleo said. “You know, there are those pockets in America that you find that you’re just like ‘wow, I can really f**k around with this area for a little bit!” Coming from Hawaii Kaleo isn’t used to chasing frigid Jersey barrels but definitely knows that head-high barrels in boardshorts is not a rare occurrence during the right season. “I’ve seen pictures of Jersey looking like Indo,” Kaleo said. “I’m thinking like WTF is this!” And although the guys are accustomed to the comfort of warm water, living in California now has introduced them to the method and madness of peeing in their wetsuit to get a burst of warmth. “I’ll probably throw down like four or five waters before I go out just so I can get at least two warming sensations,” Kaleo confessed.

All in all, The Vans Warped Tour was a success. The opportu-nity to talk with band members about their craft and then see-ing them throw it all out there on stage is epic in every sense of the word. The tour will continue the trek west in hopes of turning music lovers on to bands like Pepper, The Expend-ables and Passafire that know how to blend roots, rock and

reggae harmoniously. If following the tour west isn’t workable there’s no need to fret. Pepper, The Expendables and Ballyhoo! are gearing up to tour this upcoming Fall. The Chip Miller Surf Fest was expected to draw a record number of people Wednesday. But no one could have predicted that the crowd of surfers and spectators on Ocean City's 7th Street Beach would swell to an estimated 1,000 people.

The event honors Chip Miller of Ocean City, who suffered from amyloidosis and died in 2004. The general public knows little about this disease, which degenerates the body's organs and tissues. The Chip Miller Surf Fest began as a way to celebrate Miller's life, raise money for amyloidosis research and build awareness.

The massive turnout was largely due to a pair of special guests - Somers Point pro Dean Randazzo and 19-year-old shark-attack survivor Bethany Hamilton. Hamilton lost her arm in the encounter but taught herself to surf again and now competes among the best female surfers in the world.(Text reprinted from Jon Coen of The Press of Atlantic City)

I understand your battle with cancer has you with inspiration in many different forms. How has that transpired to shaping boards? Just in the fact that I want to give back. I approached my sponsors with the idea of making a product in my name with proceeds going toward the fight against cancer like a traction pad or a surfboard model, but no takers. So, I decided to start my own brand, surfboards is part of that branding. Everything I do will have some percentage of proceeds going toward the fight against cancer.

Can you tell us about how you continue the fight against cancer, how you are dedicated to giving back, and why that is important?Well, its very important to me because I feel so fortunate to be here, healthy and surfing again. I have a great family, things are good! Its really scary to get a diagnosis like cancer and I know when I got mine it was really scary. You go from being invincible to really? Death is starring me in the face now! Holly shit! So, if I can help people it makes me feel good, so many people helped me. The Dean randazzo cancer foundation was started to hlep others dealing with cancer.

What gave you the idea to start shaping?Well, I wouldn't call myself a shaper, I'm a designer, I'm putting years of knowledge and understanding into Randazzo surfboards from my past and from riding the best shapers boards around the globe. I started working with the "Ninja" on some of my ideas and things took off quick we have great synergy together.

Can you tell us about the underground shaper you work with known as “The Ninja?”I could tell you but then I'd have to give you a pair of cement boots. Ha ha!

Q&A with

In what ways does your style of surfing transfer over to the boards you shape? When I first started surfing I'd ride what ever I could get my hands on usually pieces of crap single fins and twins and weighed a ton with duck tape all over them. I think that added to the power surfing I've become none for because it took so much strength to turn those things. As the years grew on I was riding a lot of quads then thrusters. I went from flat v bottoms to concave bottoms. I've pretty much rode them all. So, I think a lot of my designs have some influence from the past. I think my surfing style definitely influences my boards because I'm very demanding of my surfboards performance. I know what it feels like to get a lot of speed and lay down some big critical turns. Most shapers don't have that understanding. So, I know what it takes and I put that into my surfboard models. I can't really go into to much more detail about my design theory's because once again, you'll be gifted with a pair of cement boots.

Do you believe growing up and surfing in New Jersey has an influence on certain board designs? If so, which boards specifically are good for mushy surf that we get a lot in the summer?Yes, well not only growing up in New Jersey but surfing so many different waves around the world I have a pretty good Idea of different designs for different waves. Personally I like to have a good all around board first and foremost. Then I look for back up boards or specialty boards like for Jersey when its small or boarder line surfable. I've got the Pork frog, chop suey, little joe, a new secret model that doesn't have a name yet for smaller waves actually they work in waves to. The Chop suey is probably the best for as small as it gets, the board flys.

What’s the deal with camp ZZO?Camp ZZO was started a year or so ago, its an advanced camp to teach the up and comers advanced competitive skills. More for the kids aggressively competing. I also have a camp for more of a beginners next level where the kids may just be starting to compete or want to focus more on stance and different turns etc...

Where can all the good people hungry for quality product find your boards and apparel? They can start by going to Randazzoindustries.com and checking out the board models. Then they can go buy one at 7th Street Surf Shop, Kona Sports, and Eastern Lines.

I appreciate the variety of shapes and ideas your putting out there. I think I appreciate the names even more! The Chop Suey, The Ozzie & Harriet, The Pork Frog, The Little Joe, etc…Where do you come up with these names? The names come from inspirations from where I come from and grew up. Quite a few of the names have craps terms because I love to throw the dice. Although I don't gamble very often, but when I do I'll only play craps. It kinda fits my personality. The Ozzie and Harrriet is a craps term for a Hard 8. Little joe is another craps term but also named after my big brother Joe. So, we have the little joe and the big Joe models. The pork frog came from when 7th street opened up my boards, they looked at the line and said they wanted a model in-between the chop suey and the little joe. He said I don't care what u call it ,I don't care if its called pork frog just make us something. I went home and started thinking about the board and the model and naming it. I thought pork frog that is actually really cool, Pork frog model will have you leaping over sections! How awesome is that! I like to have names with meaning not just say I'm gonna name it that. The Little Joe is hard 4's, the Ozzie and harriet is hard 8, the model has 4 fins and 4 wings. So the names come from a place of passion and meaning I'm not just throwing names out there that sound good.

Please feel free to as much information as you'd like. Quotes from people who have ridden your boards or whatever else you can think of that I didn't cover is appreciated. Looking forward to meeting you in person sometime in the near future! I think i will have something else to add here but I'm tired and its not coming to me now. Whens the deadline? thanks! Sorry its late I've been surfing and away from my computer for the last couple days. Oh, surf has been pumping! Let me know what else you need photo's, and whatever else thanks, Dean

So we had the opportunity to check out and test ride the non-stop pumping wave at The Flow House and I wish I was there as Im writing this. The Flow house brought in some of their team riders to show us the capabilities from a pro point of view and the performance seemed like a surf, skate and snowboarding style all mixed up. Wipe outs are not as painfull as they look, the suface feels like a wrestling mat on top of a trampoline. All in all, The Flow house is right here in NJ and when mother nature wont

put out, this thing is by far the best alternative. You can sign up for beginners flow clinics where they will teach you all the basics. The way this place is set up is pretty cool because it's like a theater, and defineitlty a family oriented spot. Open from April to October... Stand up hours are from 8-9am and 7-11pm If you boogie board stop in in between these hours.

Our event was founded on one racer and one surfer teaming up to participate in both sports each. However, we separate into two classes. The racers only have to compete against the racers in the moto and the surf comp. and vice versa for the surfers. You don't have to be good at both sports or have much experience in the sport that you are lacking in. It's a fun time for anyone willing to get out of there element and try something new. With all the new exciting extreme sports becoming popular. The days of surfers just being surfers are behind us. Same goes for racers. So if you haven't picked up an mx mag in a while racers, grab a board and lets hit the water. We have paired up with Angry Drunk Graph-ics.com for there annual BBQ at our next event. Which will be held at Atco MX Park in Atco NJ. We will have live bands performing through out the day while the races are going off on Aug.13th. Start Time for the races are at 8am Bands start at 11am. It will be a day to re-member! The following day we'll be heading to Surf Unlimited Surf Shop at 19th st. Ship Bot-tom NJ at 8 am to meetup and head down to a location in Beach Haven. There we will kick off an all time surf off of racers and surfers. That night we'll have the awards ceremony/after party at Nardi's in Long Beach Township. Any questions contact us through MXSurfing.com or Facebook Moto/Surf Competition.
