We applaud the work that theLeague for Human Rights of Bnai BrithCanada does in combatting anti-Semitism. And the Friends of the SimonWiesenthal Center deserves enormouscredit for bringing to light the anti-Semiticcurriculum of the Toronto MuslimMadrassah. The Center for Israel andJewish Affairs did all Canadians a favourwhen it helped prevent Dieudonne M’BalaM’Bala from spewing his venom in Montrealand using his platform to promote his fea-ture film L’Antisemite, which was producedin Iran Regrettably there remain those, even in this supposedly enlightened era,who see their life’s work as aiding in theextermination of the “treacherous Jews”.Only if we bring blatant acts of discrimi-nation to the attention of authorities canwe be confident that purveyors of hatredwill be exposed and ultimately be broughtto judgement.

But we are concerned that BnaiBrith’s report, which concludes that anti-Semitism in Canada remains at an “all timehigh”, gives the impression that Canada isinfested with the poison of racism and thathatred lurks behind the walls of every non-Jewish house.

Our fear of anti-Semitism is under-standable. The exaggeration of this fear, too,is easily explained. We are still not that farremoved from the Hitler era and its savageconsequences to react objectively even toamateurish hate-mongering. There are stilltoo many Jews with the tell-tale marks ontheir arms. But it would be a double tragedyif we were to allow the incidents outlined inBnai Brith’s report to destroy our faith in

Anti-Semitism in Canada -A Return to Reason

WHILE IT WOULD BE FOOLISH FOR CANADIAN JEWS TOslough off acts of anti-Semitism, there is no justification forworrying that “it could happen here”.

Canadian pluralism. Canadian Jews wouldbe doing themselves a great disservice if weirrationally looked at all our non-Jewishneighbours as the “enemy camp”. If we can’tlead rich, full and satisfying lives here, ifsocial acceptability and economic securityare beyond our grasp, then why build syna-gogues, schools and libraries?

Apathy and smugness would befolly. Eternal vigilance is today, as it hasalways been, the price of liberty; and weJews must exercise all the vigilance neces-sary to ensure that the hate mongers amongus are prevented from achieving their aims. But we must be equally on guard againstthe development among us of a neurotichysteria, created by the trauma of our trag-ic history of being the perennial scapegoat. Many of today’s anti-Semites are nothingmore than crackpots and hoodlums. If thislunatic fringe of non-entities is going to causeJews to worry that their foundation inCanada is a precarious one, that our fate is intheir hands, then these crackpots will, sure-ly, have accomplished more than they hadhoped.

And there’s one additional point thathas to be made. Too often we hear Jewsreferring to Blacks as “shvartz.” All too fre-quently the words “shiksa” and “sheketz”are disparagingly thrown around the dinnertable. Nor do we think it particularly appro-priate when we refer, even amongst our-selves, to non-Jews by the obviously pejo-rative label “goy”. Those who are girdingthemselves for the fight against anti-Semitism should perhaps pause to remindthemselves that Jews owe non-Jews thesame respect we seek for ourselves.

tempts to pin down the elu-sive key characteristics thatmake modern Israel anation unlike all othernations.

I’ll name a few:Chutzpah, TransformingAdversity to Advantage andPowerful Family Links. While many explanationshave been offered as to whyour nation has accom-plished so much in such ashort amount of time and ina challenging and hostileenvironment, I believe thatthe issue of national charac-ter and personal determina-tion shouldn’t be over-looked.

Undoubtedly, thereis an underlying Israeli (ormany would say Jewish)characteristic that can onlybe defined as chutzpah. Tothe uninitiated, this term isoften mistranslated asbrashness or even rude-ness. Yet, those who trulyappreciate what motivates

chutzpah know that this isa character trait driven byan unwavering determina-tion to get things done –and ensuring that “no” cannot be the answer.Chutzpah can also be usedpositively to challenge thestatus quo and look fornew ways to do things bet-ter and reject the skepti-cism of the naysayers. Thisis a big part of what makesIsrael so successful andunique.

I can certainlyrelate to this character trait- it’s what made me pushahead when I foundedBirthright Israel and sincethen, it’s a vision that Ihave been blessed to sharewith hundreds of thou-sands of young peoplesince the program’slaunch.

In the spirit of thisfilm, Israel’s 64th anniver-sary should be used to dis-

2006.“This poll con-

firms the continuedtrend of the hardening ofArab attitudes and theworsening of ArabJewish relations, butalso shows that there isa lot of pragmatismamong the Arabs and theframework for Arab-Jewish relations is stillin existence and stillsolid,” Smooha said.

He defined theframework as the accep-tance of the state of Israeland the Palestinian statealongside.

Ali Haider, co-director of Sikkuy, anorganization pushing forcivic equality in Israel, was more skeptical. Hesaid it was important tohave surveys to examinetrends, but he dislikedterms like “co-existence,”“pragmatism” and “alien-ation.”

“We talk aboutequality and shared pub-lic space and respect ofidentities,” Haider toldThe Media Line. “ThePalestinian minority inIsrael from 2000 untilnow feels some kind offrustration from the gov-ernment and Jewish soci-ety, especially after thelast election,” which high-lighted a right-wing agen-da.

“Israeli Arabs feelthat the government inIsrael is working againstthem. Current trendsreflect to the Arabs thatthey are not welcomed andtheir citizenship is threat-ened,” Haider said.

He was referring tothe so-called “Nakba Law”which imposes financialdamages on any state-funded institution spon-soring a Nakba-relatedevent; imposed civil ser-vice; incitement againstArab leadership; andincreasing racism byright-wing Israeli leaders.

“I don’t know towhich national group weare patriotic, but we want

Extremism was notabsent from the survey.Nineteen percent of IsraeliArabs denied Israel's rightto exist, as opposed to11% who expressed a sim-

lar view in 2003. Fifty-seven percent of IsraeliArabs said that theywould support a referen-dum that defined Israel asa "Jewish, democraticstate that promised fullcivil rights to Arabs,"compared to the 70.9%who said they would sup-port such a referendum in

miss the notion of a modernIsrael solely defined by theconflict that surrounds it.In little more than half acentury, a country has beencreated that is a burgeoninghaven of scientific innova-tion, a marketplace of ideasthat attracts the world’sleading minds and a centerof some of the world’s mostcontributive medical discov-eries.

An arid land ofdesert and harsh climatehas literally been trans-formed into a leading inter-national exporter of thou-sands of products to themajority of ports around theglobe. Despite the globaleconomic downturn, theIsraeli export industry con-tinues to grow and in 2011recorded $89 billion insales, a 4.5 percentincrease over the previousyear.

As clichéd as manymight think it to be, thetruth is that all of Israel isone big family – in timesboth good and bad. Theconcept of a national collec-tive that motivated theestablishment of the statedemonstrates itself today inthe ethos of a nationalresponsibility for fellow citi-zens and has penetratedinto all aspects of Israelisociety.

I chided the Jewishestablishment when Ifounded Birthright. My the-ory was that Jewish identityamong American secularJews would surge if thatgroup felt connected toIsrael. And I was right.

Here, I will chideagain: Israel’s identity at 64must be linked to our col-lective pride in Israel’saccomplishments, and theconfidence that we haveonly revealed a portion ofthe country’s full nationalpotential. But Not For Baseball

There were 40,000people in the stands at NewYork’s Citi Field on May20th. The Jumbo Tron dis-played shots of cute kids inthe stands. Airlines fromLaGuardia drowned out thenoise from the stands.

But there was some-thing different about thiscrowd. For one, the crowdconsisted of all men in blackhats. For another, therewas no sign of any baseballplayers. The Mets were inPittsburgh. And two bill-boards advertising CholulaHot Sauce were covered inplastic to hide the scantilyclad women pictured on thebottles.

So who were these40,000 men? They wereultra-Orthodox Jews attend-ing a rally to protest thedangers of the Internet.Rabbis told the crowd thatthe Internet was a threat totheir children and to ultra-Orthodoxy in general. TheInternet, said RabbiEphfraim Wachsman, is“changing who we are...Youcan see it in the ebbing eyesof the younger generation. inthe jittery inattentiveness ofour children, in the flippantand callous language andattitude, the cynism...theunbelievable breeches ofmodesty”. Not the

Biggest Tipper

It has not been thebest of times for FacebookFounder Mark Zuckerberg. While he is still worth bil-lions, the value of his port-folio has clearly dimin-ished over the past fewweeks. So it seems thatwhile on his recent honey-moon, Zuckerberg realizedthat he would have toscrimp just a bit.

The newly-wed cou-ple spent their honeymoonin Rome. While there heand Priscilla lunched atthe kosher restaurantNonna Betta in the city’sJewish Ghetto area. Thebill came to $40.

In Europe, ofcourse, the gratuity isincluded in the totalamount of the check. Butwaiters, aware of his repu-tation for being a generoustipper, were expecting theZuckerbergs to leave a lit-tle something extra.

But the staff wasout of luck. The couplewalked out the door with-out leaving a cent morethan the $40.

And one morething. Wine was apparent-ly beyond the couple’s bud-get. They limited theirdrinks to water and tea.
