CAPTAIN CHIPS UP
The Box Hill Whitewash
Our visit to Box Hill for the return meet against the Legends didn't go according to plan. In fact, we didn't even come close, failing to win a single match. Why did this happen? We have some analysing to do. In a few cases, we simply didn't play as well as we can, com-ing in well over our handicaps. Some put up admirable efforts - Dennis and Spanner in partic-ular who were both leading but eventually surrendered that lead. There does seem to be a "fatigue factor" that comes into play. As a group we're a fair bit older. The Legends' oldest player used a cart and even he fell away over the last few holes (he had hardly put a foot wrong prior to that). We can't really blame the fact that we were playing on a new course, because four or five of their blokes hadn't played there before either. Maybe the issue of handicaps needs to be looked at, but it's difficult to build in a "fatigue factor" component.
However we shouldn't get too carried away with recriminations and analysis. In the end, we are a social group where the emphasis is on providing an outlet for retired blokes to have some exercise in a friendly and social atmosphere, with all the fun and banter that goes with that. The competition against the Legends is an "add on" activity for those interested in a bit more competition. (But we still like to win!!).
Apart from the results, there's a strong feeling that the concept of this competition is great and is hopefully here to stay. Things didn't go our way this time but here's looking to next year. We get on well with the Legends' players and the day is played in good spirit.
A big thanks to the caddies and others who came later in the day. It all added to the day in a big way.
EDITORS NOTE
Thanks to the blokes who give me stuff for putting in this report
to liven it up a bit.
Keep doing it — ed.
