Thanks!!!

Summer is expected to arrive in Wisconsin soon. We are

forecast to have high temperatures in the mid-60’s for this

week and there is TV talk of another “polar vortex” that kept us

cool and damp so far. We may have to come back to Florida to get

warm.

All indications I have are that the Sea Dream cruise was a huge

success. This was another good Yacht club experience led by Craig

and Mary Lou Anderson. Please keep in mind the Lord of the Glen’s

Scottish cruise being planned by the Kelley’s for summer 2016.

As those of you in Gulf Harbour for the summer know, the

clubhouse renovations are upsetting the normal Yacht Club summer

schedule and will continue to require our adjustments until

December. I want to thank Barb Hendricks and Sheri French for

managing the situation to minimize issues.

For those wishing to sign up for the November 14-17 Naples ex-

tended cruise, the cruise will be opened up for e-mail sign-up in

September. We will keep you informed in future Marker 73 publi-

cations.

I have to go put another log on our fire. Have a good summer.

On June 13 AMIkids Southwest Florida hosted an ice cream social! Love Boat Home

Made Ice Cream provided ice cream to all the students, staff, board members and a few

guests.

Save the Date! Our signature fundraiser, Charting a New Course for AMIkids

Southwest Florida will take place on February 21, 2015. The event will take place at the

Vice Commodore Report By Gary Morgan

SeaDream June 2014- All 102 GH members had a wonderful time spending 12 days in the

Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas cruising in a 5 Star lifestyle. The food was the best we have ever

experienced on a cruise and the Staff was over the top. Many stories will be told at the next cocktail parties

and Gail is putting together a picture album for all to enjoy. We were all definitely making memories!!!

Gulf Harbour Fishing Club by Chip Graddy

The Gulf Harbour Fishing Club does not meet during the

summer months, however there are great fishing opportunities for

those willing to brave the heat and the thunderstorms.

Snook are one our prized game fish in Southwest Florida. The summer

months are ideal for catching (and releasing) these great fighters. Snook

are especially fun to catch just off the beaches where they don't have dock

pilings and mangroves with which to make their escape. Live Threadfin

Herring are ideal bait and can be cast netted near bridges, on the flats, and

sometimes schooling in open water. The Snook are frequently just off the

beaches in 1-3 feet of water and are most active early or late in the day.

As always, a good tide with moving water will help your chances. In this

photo is a typical Snook caught off Sanibel in June.

Please send me emails this summer (with photos) of your successful

fishing trips, wherever in the country/world you might be fishing.

Plan to join us this fall when the Fishing Club will resume our monthly meetings. Watch for

updates as to meeting times and locations. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or

(239) 340-5207 if you would like more information about our club.

A Book Recommendation From Editor Capt. K

Check your local library or E-Book store for “At The Edge Of Honor” by Robert MaComber --

Published 2002.

A historically based novel that I think will be enjoyed by small boat sailors who are familiar

with the local waters and areas -- Key West to Useppa, including Cape Romano, Sanibel, Captiva,

Charlotte Harbour, and points between…with an occasional side trip to Havana, the Bahamas and

the Abacos.

The story of a squadron of US Union Navy sailors, led by a protagonist named ‘Wake’, who

sailed aboard a 45’ sloop on the Florida Gulf coast during the Civil War – often not knowing if the

person off their bow and in their sights was an enemy, a fleeing refugee or a member of their own rag-tag fighting force.

Things were not peaceful on the Peace River.

Those who have plied the Florida coast in a small craft will appreciate the crew’s encounters with the flora, fauna,

insects, poisonous plants and snakes, heat and humidity, in waters where un-reliable charts of the coast line and skinny

waters took as many tolls as did the enemy weapons…and clearly written by someone who knows the difference between

being ‘hove short’ and being on a ‘broad reach’.

Women’s Book Club by Ann Barney

We have made the following selections for November and December.

Nov 5 - The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Dec 3 - The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty

The Gulf Harbour Book Club meets the first Wednesday of each month from November to May in the

Members' Dining Room at 1:00 p.m. All members of the Gulf Harbour Club are welcome.

If you need more information, please e-mail Ann Barney at [email protected].

Hope all have a wonderful summer and enjoy lots of good books and come back with new ideas for us.

Happy Reading.

One of the many perks of living in SW Florida is easy access to the Key West Express. As a native of Ft.

Myers, I should have enjoyed this experience a long time ago. I would highly recommend it.

Thanks to a generous offer from Dennis and Mary Jo Little, I hopped the Key West Express over

Memorial Day weekend to go down to Key West for a couple days of fishing. They were wonderful hosts and

we had a weekend that I will never forget.

My prayers were answered as the winds and seas died down the day before my visit. Dennis and Mary Jo

hired a guide and his mate to do the hard work. Dennis skillfully captained his Viking (Little's Sand Bar) to

the fishing grounds and the fun began. We had two great days of fishing (and eating) and I learned that

Mary Jo is one heck of a fisherman. Pictured in this photo are Mary Jo and the captain and his mate. Note

that she caught two of these three Dolphin (Mahi Mahi)!

Summertime fishing is SW Florida is terrific as the

Tarpon are everywhere and the Snook and Redfish are

very active. The Gulf Harbour Fishing Club will not meet

again until the fall, but anyone interested in fishing with

club members can get involved at any time.

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] or

(239) 340-5207 if you would like more information about

our club.
