Spirit WeekThe week of Back to School Night, August 19th-23rd, was Monterey High School’s Spirit Week. Monday was “Show Your School Spirit Day” so all the staff and students wore their Monterey t-shirts to school and showed off their school pride. Tuesday was “Hawaiian Day” so everyone wore their Ha-waiian themed shirts and accessories. During nutrition we played a game of musical chairs and the winner won a five dollar gift card to In-N-Out! Wednesday was “Twin Day,” so students and staff paired up with a twin. Our teachers Mr. Loyd and Ms. Elliot were twinning exactly! Mr. Loyd even went as far to put on a wig that closely resembled Ms. Elliot’s hair! Thursday was was “Pajama Day,” and the activity for this day was a water balloon toss event. The winners were presented with a five dollar gift card to In-N-Out and Yo-gurtland while also getting soaked by water balloons. Friday was finally “Sports Day” and everyone wore their favorite jersey repre-senting their favorite sports team. On this day we had a raffle and the winner won a twenty dollar gift card to AMC. Spirit Week was officially a success and all the students and staff enjoyed partici-pating in the activities. Al-though this was just our first time putting together “Spirit Week,” we hope to plan more fun activities like this in the future.

Monterey High School is a special place. Looking back over the first quarter as Principal, I could not be

more proud and encouraged. We have a wonderful community of students and parents, and we have a wonder-

ful team that comes to work here every day.

In this first quarter, we have completed our WASC report. We are prepared for the WASC visit on November 3-6.

WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) is the accreditation process for all high schools. The team

here, including parents and students, has done a lot of reflection and planning for the future.

I’ll highlight two of the goals that we have. One goal is to increase our daily attendance rate. Our data

shows that our students who are doing well here are also attending regularly. Therefore, we’d like to see our daily

attendance rate increase. You will see and hear an increase in recognition for students who demonstrate good

attendance. The first such recognition is donuts and milk on Wednesday, September 18th, for all of our students

who were above 90% for their first quarter attendance. We will send home more messages and reminders to

families regarding attendance as well, so stay tuned.

The second goal I’d like share with you is that we want to improve our communication with parents and

students regarding their credit earning and grad status. You’ve already received some of the efforts of that work.

We revamped our progress report to include some student reflection about how many credits they are earning

and what their credits per quarter should be in order to graduate on time. This work was done in a new class

we’ve added called Advisory class. Each student is assigned an Advisory teacher to help teach and guide them

through their Monterey journey. If you have any questions about that progress report please call us. On Friday,

September 20th, we will be mailing out report cards. You will be able to see exactly what classes your student

finished this quarter and how many credits they earned. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to call us.

We are excited for another awesome year at Monterey. Again, it is a privilege to serve your students.

Sincerely,

David GuyerPrincipalMonterey High School 818-729-5900 ext [email protected]
