MonochordMonochordMonochordMonochord----KotoKotoKotoKoto----TamburaTamburaTamburaTamburaThe MO-38 includes 2; the MO-42 fromfeeltone includes 3 instruments. Since 1995,still under the name of Boing, we steadilykept developing this instrument and theplenty accessories.

Now let us help you build up yourinstrument and let us inform you about allthe extras that you can get additionally.

The Monochord is not finally built up because oftransportation reasons. You need two feet, two handles

and the head with a wing.1. On top of the instrument you find the pegs. In

between the pegs there is a drilling. Here youscrew in the head into the thread.

    2. The drillings for the feet you find on both sides of theMonochord. Stick the screw of the handle into the drilling of

the foot part and then into the drilling of the body of themonochord. Inside there is a thread which will tighten thescrew. Do this on both sides. If you screw the handle realtight the monochord will be get loose in the feet.

    3. The Monochord stands in upright position now. This is he most used position. Thebody of the instrument is upright now, like the body of the player. We recommend asmall stool, see delivery program.

    4. If you want to play horizontally, just press the feet of the instrument to the groundand bend the body to either side. The head of the monochord must be turned 90degrees that it makes a distance to the ground and the strings will not touch theground. To remove the instrument to the upright position, just move it backwardsand tighten the handles again, so it does not tip over.

    1. The strings are not finally tightened, because of transport reasons. The tuning keyyou will find attached to the Monochord. Now you have to put the key on the pegand turn the key, while strumming the string, either tighter or looser. To do a propertuning you can use a tuning instrument, we suggest the CA-30 from Korg thatmakes tuning very easy.

    2. If you work educationally or therapeutically with people, you can use the event oftuning as an awareness test. Just listen and you will get a feeling for when the tone isgetting close to be tuned. The tone gets fuller, when it reaches the pitch of the

    neighbour tone.

    3. Monochord:Monochord:Monochord:Monochord: The name monochord tells us, that there is only one tone. (mono = one, cord= strings). All20sponn strings are tuned the same tone. The pitch of the sponnstrings can be chosen from A, Ais, B, c, cis, d. The most used tunings are C or D.

    4. Koto:Koto:Koto:Koto: MO-38 and MO-42 have a Koto (Japanese harp) on the backside. Any kind oftuning can be used, only by moving the single bridges. A stencil for the singlebridges (traditional tuning) is added: e, A, H, c, e, f, a, h, c`, e`,f`,a`,h`.

    5. Tambura:Tambura:Tambura:Tambura: The MO-42 has an additional Tambura (East Indian overtone instrument). The outer and thickest string of the Tambura has a tone of deep C, the middle oneshave the high c, and the one closest to the Koto is the Quinte g.

Now your instrument has the Monochord, the Koto and in the MO-42 also a Tambura andyou can start experimenting.

    a. MonochordMonochordMonochordMonochord, simply strike the strings with your fingers, alternate closer to the bridge(more overtones) or more in the middle. The Power and speed of striking variants the

sound und quality. (Relaxation, sound carpet, space less). In the beginning it might behard on your fingers, you can just use any piece of rubber with a sharp edge instead ofyour fingers, our plectrum for the clock guitar (KSK-005), our tepo sticks (K-1), or apiece of leather to protect your fingers from getting blisters.

    b. Koto,Koto,Koto,Koto, the strings will be pulled, striked at the lower end, just like a harp. To vibrate thetones, you can either pull the string down on the other side of the single bridge, or pullfirst down and then strike and let go. (Melodie, Harp, stimulating)

    c. TamburaTamburaTamburaTambura,,,, the four strings of the Tambura, can be striked horizontally as well asvertically, away from the instrument. The typical snare tone happens, because the

strings touch and snare against the bridge when they vibrate. It needs very finenuances to make the sound comfortable. Eventually you should help yourself withputting a thread under the string, where it touches the bridge. (rich overtones, Trance,Meditative)

You are very welcome to change our ground tuning and experiment. Throughexperimenting there became many accessories that we want to show you now.

1.1.1.1. EEEE----2222 is a bridge of the total width of the Monochord; you can higher the basictuning of the instrument by moving the bridge towards the middle, startingfrom the bottom side.(included)

    2. EEEE----3333 hashashashas two half bridges. You can dividethe 25 strings into two differnt tunings orintervals. Through this you already havefour extra tones, two left and two at theright side from the bridges. (not included)

    3. EEEE----4444 has three third bridges. You can divide the tuning in 3 parts and have 6extra tones for extra accords or other tunings.

    4. EEEE----5555 is a single bridge. You put it under one string, to give thestring a defined tone. With several single bridges you canarrange complete scales, diatonic or chromatic.
