For the past 149 years, the Sisters have been offering the needy, elderly of the tri-state, a home where they are welcomed as Christ, cared for as a family, and accompanied with dignity, until God calls them to himself. The Sisters depend on our support to meet the needs of their poor, elderly. Your generosity will be appreciated. July 16, 2017

Greetings in the name of the Lord: I have now been here at St. Antoninus a little over two weeks, and I am so excited about being with all of you here at your parish. Thus far, most of our encounters have been at Sunday Mass and weekday Mass. This coming Friday evening, we all have the opportunity to gather and socialize as a parish family at Stricker’s Grove. This is a family event, where family and friends come together and celebrate the faith of our parish community. I do have two requests for our parish families. First, invite a family who is away from the Church to come and join us for an evening of relaxing fun. Second, if you know of a parishioner who is unable to drive, offer to give them a ride. These two kind acts reflect the beauty of our parish family. See you at the parish picnic! Yours in Christ:

Fr. Haft On Monday, July 24, at 9:00AM in church,

Father Michael Bidwell, Dean of the St.

Lawrence Deanery, will administer the oath of

fidelity to our pastor, Fr. Ronald Haft. All are

invited to attend.

Archdiocese of Cincinnati Office of the Archbishop 100 East Eighth Street Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 513-421-3131 Ext. 2810 Convocation of Catholic Leaders: The Joy of the Gospel in America Dear Brothers in Holy Orders, This week marked an unprecedented and fruitful occasion for the Church in the United States. Nearly 3,500 Catholic leaders, including 52 from our Archdiocese, gathered for four days to worship together, share ministry practices with one another, and contemplate the pastoral vision provided by Pope Francis in his first apostolic exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel. Our Archdiocesan delegation to the Convocation of Catholic Leaders will convene again in a few weeks to resume a Spirit-led exploration of how to engage all of the faithful of the Archdiocese in prayer, thoughtful interaction, and discernment of God's plan, as we continue to go and make disciples, teaching them all that God has commanded (Mt 28:19-20). I ask that you share this information with your parishioners, and that you encourage them to become familiar with the convocation and its vision of missionary discipleship through the upcoming coverage in The Catholic Telegraph. Meanwhile, for more information about the convocation, including on-demand video of convocation sessions, please visit USCCB.org. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr Archbishop of Cincinnati

S A I N T V I N C E N T D E P A U L S O C I E T Y In today’s Gospel, we hear the story of the sower, and we know that “some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit a hundred or sixty or thirty fold.” This week, by putting a gift in the St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that, together, they will produce fruit a hundred fold. ST. ANTONINUS 250 LOTTO WINNERS are Bev and Ted Nussman who have won the $200 and Rose Altenau who won the $50. Congratulations, and thank you for supporting the 250 Lotto. ADULT SOCIAL GROUP will not have a luncheon or communion service during the month of August. Look for September information in the August bulletin.

H O L Y S P I R I T P R A Y E R G R O U P Since many of the members of the prayer group are a part of the team for the Presentation Ministries Bible Institute, we will spend Tuesday evening in intercessory prayer for its protection

and success. Ben Klaene has written an inspiring rosary meditation for the Luminous Mysteries for this night. It involves a short Scripture passage for each Hail Mary and for all the needs of the Institute. We earnestly seek your prayers now and through the whole week of the Institute. Join us in Chapel 7:30 PM. For more information on the Presentation Ministries Bible Institute, you may call 513-922-0923, or pick up one of the brochures at the desk in the Greeting Room.

Reading I: Isaiah: 55: 10-11: The authorship of this book has been attributed by Jewish and Christian tradition

to the great prophet Isaiah. According to the book of Sirach, Isaiah lived in the time of Hezekiah, king of Judah

(716-687 BC). This week’s passage comes from a chapter in Isaiah titled “Invitation to partake of the banquet

of the Lord’s Covenant”, in which the prophet uses comparisons that are particularly meaningful to those who

live in the arid countries of the East, to describe how very powerful the word of God is: it actually delivers the

salvation it promises. The word in verse 11 is a figure of the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of

the Father, who comes down to save mankind. The prophet tells us that the word of God will not return to

Him empty and barren. Rather, it will flourish in all things, nourished by the good deeds of those who obey

and fulfill His teachings. The word is fulfilled when it is put into practice; if it is not put into practice, it remains

barren, withered, and starved.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 65: 10, 11, 12-13, 14: The psalm for Mass this weekend is a psalm of David,

inviting us to praise God, who forgives and delivers His people, and fills the land with plenty. In our passage,

God is depicted as a farmer who can control the rainfall and fertility of the earth. That is why the yearly

harvest is so abundant. He makes all land fruitful. The psalmist sees nature joining in man’s praise of the

goodness of God. Biblical scholars propose that the things said in this psalm about the fruitfulness of the earth

being a gift from God have helped Christians to appreciate the sublime gift of the Holy Spirit, especially the

waters referred to in verse 10. The Lord Himself said in John 4:14, “whoever drinks of the water that I shall

give him will never thirst; the water that I shall give him will become, in him, a spring of water welling up to

enteral life.” So the furrows are full of the water of God. In other words, we are filled with the gifts of the

Holy Spirit and the stream that overflows with the water of God pours into us from that font of life. Through

it, we are made ready for union with God.

Reading II: Romans 8:18-23: St. Paul is telling us about being filled with hope and confidence in the midst of

suffering in this passage from Romans. To illustrate this point, St. Paul uses a metaphor, depicting the whole

of the material universe (creation) as a living person, groaning in pain, impatiently waiting for a future event,

raising its head, straining to see something appear on the horizon. The material world is, through God’s

design, linked to man and his destiny. The futility to which creation is subject (verse 20) is not so much

corruption and death as the disorder resulting from sin. According to God’s plan, material things should be

resources which enable man to attain the ultimate goal of his existence. By using them in a disordered way,

disconnecting them from God, man turns them into instruments of sin, which, therefore, are subject to the

consequences of sin. In his first papal encyclical Redemptor hominis, St. John Paul II, writing on this passage

from Romans, addressed material things in terms of man’s intellect and work produced by our hands. He

wrote that today’s man seems to be threatened by the result of the work of his hands and his intellect. We

live with apprehension, fearing that what we produce may turn into an instrument of self- destruction, and

certainly used for ill purposes. The reason for this, according to John Paul II, is that the development of

technology and civilization “demand a proportional development of morals and ethics. For the present, this

last development seems, unfortunately, to be always left behind.” Thus, we are the world groaning in travail.

Re-establishment of the order willed by God, bringing the whole world to fulfil its true purpose is the particular

mission of the Holy Spirit (verse 23). Continued on the next page...

BREAKING OPEN THE WORD with Kathy O ’Connor

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Continued from the previous page.

Gospel: Matthew 13: 1-23: St. Matthew’s Gospel has been called the Gospel of the discourses, of the Lord

because of the five long discourses it contains. Through these discourses we can hear Jesus’ words, and be

present when He preaches. The Gospel passage for Mass this weekend is known as the parabolic discourse,

because it contains many of the parables with which Jesus taught. The parables in this passage are known as

the parables of the Kingdom. They are sometimes also referred to as the “parables of the Lake”, because Jesus

taught them on the shore of Lake Gennesaret. Our Lord used these elaborate parables (which are comparisons

or analogies), to explain certain features of the Kingdom of God, which Jesus has come to establish. Jesus

found parables to be an effective way of teaching, because He keeps His listeners attention whether they are

well educated or not, and, by means of the most ordinary things of daily life, He sheds light on the deepest

supernatural mysteries. The disciples are puzzled by Jesus’ use of parables, and ask Him why He is teaching in

that way. Parables are used to explain something that is not easy to understand, such as the supernatural

matters that Jesus was explaining. For example, if we are outdoors on a brilliantly sunny day, it is necessary to

shade our eyes to see things if the sun is too bright; otherwise, we are blinded by the brightness, and see

nothing. Similarly, parables help to shade supernatural brightness, so all the listeners may grasp meaning

without being blinded by it. Also, the division between the followers of Jesus and the religious leaders has

deepened. So now, Jesus will begin to teach in parables, encouraging His followers to think about the meaning

of the parables and their application. There is power in the words of Jesus. He is inviting the people to change

their hearts, yet the religious leaders shunned Him, and people often didn’t understand Him. Jesus’ Lordship is

real, as is the Kingdom of God. But Jesus wields His Lordship gently; He refuses to bully us into following Him.

Jesus Himself was the sower of the parable, and He remains thus today. His Church continues to plant the seed

of truth but never forces hearts to welcome it.

Reflection: In the first reading, Isaiah told us that the Word of God would not return to the Father empty and

barren. The Word of God will flourish because many seeds have been planted. Prior to the Incarnation, the

seeds were sown by the prophets. Then, with the Incarnation, God sent His Word who continued to sow seeds.

Now, after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, the Church continues to sow seeds. We, the members of the

Body of Christ, are the soil of the parable. Our souls are individual gardens, and we are free to hear and heed

God’s saving word. He offers it to us (sows the seed), gives us plenty of opportunities to listen to it (Mass), and

put it into practice (the examples of our Christian lives). But any garden is susceptible to weeds (or, the case of

our souls, negative influences). Our modern culture furnishes multitudes of distractions, and we must pull

those weeds. When we welcome Christ, our lives bear abundant fruit: meaning, purpose, and joy. When we

harden our hearts to God’s words and listen to other voices, our lives are barren, perhaps filled with pretty

briars and brambles, but not bearing the fruit we are meant to bear. For we are also sowers of seed: Jesus can

reach out to save many souls through us. In this coming week, perhaps we can pray ,that we will listen

carefully to the word of God, and make it our own. Perhaps, we can also pray that we can better help till and

fertilize the soil in the hearts of those around us, so that they will more readily welcome God’s word when they

hear it. Lord Jesus, reach out through us, St. Antoninus parish, to save many souls.

Guide Book & Directory Advertising Opportunity We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Church Office. Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.

Update Membership Information Does our Church database have YOUR family membership record correct? Here is your chance to update YOUR record for our annual Guide Book & Directory (if you haven’t already done so). It is time for us to update our database with any changes, additions, or deletions that may have occurred in YOUR family over the past year. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home, and are they all included in your membership record? Do you want your record published? If you have not already informed the Church Office about changes to your record, please let us know now, so that the information in the Guide Book & Directory is correct. The Church Office number is 922-5400 x 2. 2nd SIGN STUDY GROUP will meet at 8:45am – 10:15am in the Undercroft’s Holy Family Room on Saturday, August 12th. Come and be “inspired though art”.
