gallop him more. And then, with all the people here,

you think 'maybe I need to school him more.' We de-

cided just to keep the routine up. It worked in 2012,

so we're going to do the same with (Nyquist).

"When you get here in the morning, you walk

through the shedrow with one eye open and one

eye closed, because anything can happen with these

beautiful horses," O'Neill said. "But as soon as I see

(Nyquist's groom) Elias smiling, then I start smiling,

and I know that Nyquist had eaten up and his legs

look good. That's the stressful part. ... the first few

minutes at the barn, but if that goes good, then the

rest is icing on the cake for the rest of the morning."

A day after shipping from Keeneland, Nyquist

jogged over the sloppy going under exercise rider

Jonny Garcia, then cooled out at Barn 41 on Church-

ill's backstretch.

"He just had an easy jog today—nothing major,"

O'Neill said. "Jonny said he felt great. (Nyquist) was

a little bit more in control. He can be strong. We've

just learned that, with him, it is one day jog, one day

gallop."

By leading first-crop and leading juvenile sire Un-

cle Mo, Nyquist got in his final pre-Derby work April

29 at Keeneland, working a mile in 1:41 before the

day's first race.

"His work was awesome," O'Neill stated. "It's just

so nice to have the whole track to yourself. There

were a lot of people in the stands there, and people

were yelling his name. (Jockey) Mario Gutierrez flew

in to ride him, and he was smiling ear to ear after

the work, and was happy with how he felt and the

energy he displayed."

As for the coming days, O'Neill said Nyquist will

gallop May 3 and visit the paddock May 4. BH

we were all kind of dumbfounded at what had just

happened. (The auctioneer) pointed at me and hit the

hammer. It was surreal.”

Nyquist, trained by Dennis’ brother, Doug, won an

Eclipse Award as outstanding 2-year-old male of 2015,

and puts his seven-race undefeated streak on the line

in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I).

If he wins the Derby, Nyquist will become the

second winner of a classic that Dennis bought at

auction for Reddam and Doug O’Neill. He purchased

2012 Derby winner I’ll Have Another at the 2011 Ocala

Breeders’ Sales Co.’s April sale for $35,000.

At sales Dennis O'Neill spends a lot of time ob-

serving his prospective purchases. He was able to

see Nyquist in his stall numerous times daily and had

Brennan’s personnel bring him out six to eight times

so he could not only take another look, but also see

how the colt handled the moving around.

“If I’m going to bid on them, I check on them a lot,”

O’Neill said. “I’m real good about checking them out

throughout the day to see how they are in the stall.”

Bred by Summerhill Farm in Kentucky, Nyquist is

out of the winning Forestry mare Seeking Gabrielle.

Nyquist and his dam were both sold at the 2013

Keeneland November sale, the colt bringing $180,000

from Madison Farm and Seeking Gabrielle $100,000

from Hinkle Farms.

Pinhooked by Dromoland into the following year’s

Keeneland September yearling sale, Nyquist was pur-

chased by Sutton Place Farm for $230,000. BH

DENNIS O'NEILL SEEKS SECOND DERBY WINBy Ron Mitchell

When Dennis O’Neill

found a nice colt from

the first crop of Ashford Stud

stallion Uncle Mo at the 2015

Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-

olds in training sale at Gulf-

stream Park, one of his first

thoughts was there was no

way he could buy him on be-

half of owner Paul Reddam.

“I really, really liked the

(pre-sale) work, and he was

what I usually look for at a

sale and can’t afford,” O’Neill

said. “He was real athletic

and had a great mind. We

usually don’t spend $600,000-

$800,000, and I told Paul

(Reddam) he was going to

cost $800,000 to $1 million.”

O’Neill was pleasantly surprised when the colt, con-

signed by Niall Brennan Stable, was knocked down to

him for what he believed to be a bargain $400,000.

“Honestly, when the bidding started, I didn’t think

we had any chance to get him,” O’Neill said. “General-

ly, I know who is bidding and what their MO (modus

operandi) is. When the bidding stopped at $400,000,

DERBY SIRE SHOWDOWNBy Eric Mitchell

Among the subplots of this year's Kentucky Derby

(gr. I) is a stallion showdown between a proven

veteran and a young gun.

Leading sire Tapit and top second-crop sire Uncle

Mo will likely have three starters each in the Derby

gate, more than any other sires with Derby contend-

ers this year. Tapit's runners are Mohaymen, Creator,

and Lani, while Uncle Mo has Nyquist, Outwork, and

Mo Tom.

Other sires represented among the current top 20

point leaders are Giant's Causeway (2 entrants) and

those with one starter each: Bernardini, Candy Ride,

Curlin, Eskendereya, Kitten's Joy, Mineshaft, More

Than Ready, Pleasantly Perfect, Street Cry, Tiznow,

Twirling Candy, and Trappe Shot.

On the surface, this head-to-head between Tapit,

Gainesway's star son of Pulpit who was the top North

American sire in 2014 and 2015, and Ashford Stud's

Uncle Mo, a son of Indian Charlie, appears lopsided.

Now in the middle of his 12th season, Tapit has

sired 77 black-type winners, which include 48 graded

black-type winners and six champions.

His 2016 crop of 3-year-olds was produced from

an exceptionally talented group of mares. They had

an 11.32 Class Performance Index (CPI) and a 4.44

Comparable Index. The CPI indicates how good the

mares were as runners, while the CI indicates their

quality as producers. Tapit had the second-highest

CPI among stallions standing for $100,000 or more

and was tied with the second-highest CI with two

other stallions in the same stud fee range.

By comparison, Uncle Mo had the highest CI of his

sire class with a 2.92 and the third-highest CPI at 3.38,

behind Misremembered (4.24) and Gio Ponti (3.46).

A comparison of Tapit's and Uncle Mo's Derby

contenders in graded stakes this year reveals the

following:

• Each set of contenders has won four graded

stakes and two grade I stakes;

• Tapit's runners produced an average Equibase/

Timeform speed rating of 106 in their graded stakes

performances, and an average of 110 in their graded

stakes wins;

• Uncle Mo's runners produced an average

Equibase Speed Rating of 102 in all graded stakes

performances and an average of 104 in graded

stakes wins.

• The average winning margin of Tapit's contend-

ers is 1.94 compared with Uncle Mo's 1.43 average.

What makes this showdown so compelling is

the extraordinary competitiveness exhibited by the

progeny of both, according to Kentucky bloodstock

consultant Jim Schenk.

"And you have no idea where it is coming from,"

Schenk said about the will to win. "The thing about

both those horses, they get sound horses and they

absolutely run. They all have that look and are amaz-

ing horses. They actually are very similar." BH

THE MAXIMS OF PITTSBURG PHILBy Evan Hammonds

For Kentucky Derby week, we offer handicapping

tips from Racing Maxims and Methods of Pittsburg

Phil, edited and published by Edward W. Cole in

1908.

"Pittsburg Phil" was actually George Smith, who

was methodical in his gambling, never laying a bet

unless he was certain that a horse was a substan-

tial underlay. We could all learn from his wisdom:

"A man who has not an opinion of his own and

the ability to stick to it in the face of all kinds of

arguments—and arguments include betting odds in

a race—has not one chance in a million to beat the

races for any length of time.

"One who is susceptible to 'tips,' or what is

known as paddock information, may bet along very

well for awhile, but I have yet to find one who has

stuck to this line who could show a bankroll of any

dimensions.

"Frequently, I have a half dozen 'tips' on the

same race, and it was there that my own judgment

stood me in good stead." BH

DERBY WINNERS FROM A SIRE’S FIRST CROPBy Evan Hammonds

In the past 20 years, five sires have registered Kentucky

Derby (gr. I) winners from their first crops. For this

year’s Derby, three first-crop sires are likely to have run-

ners: Uncle Mo, Trappe Shot, and Twirling Candy.

Uncle Mo may have as many as four: unbeaten

champion juvenile Nyquist; Wood Memorial (gr. I)

winner Outwork; grade III winner Mo Tom; and Laoban,

currently 23rd in the Derby standings. Trappe Shot is

the sire of Blue Grass (gr. I) second My Man Sam, and

Twirling Candy is the sire of San Felipe (gr. II) winner

Danzing Candy.

Frank Angst’s feature story in the May 7 Blood-Horse

examines the five stallions who have sired Derby

winners in their first crops, and plots out the benefits

that followed—a healthy increase in both stud fee and

yearling averages, for two.

Two sires have registered Triple Crown winners in

their first crop: Gallant Fox (the 1930 Triple Crown win-

ner) sired 1935 Triple Crown winner Omaha, and Bold

Reasoning, the sire of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle

CHAUTAUQUA, MAURICE TRIUMPH IN HONG KONGBy Bob Kieckhefer

Japanese miler Maurice and Australian sprint star

Chautauqua took top honors at Sha Tin Racecourse

May 1 in a rare shutout for the local team in two group I

events in Hong Kong.

Chautauqua (Encosta de Lago) rolled from last to win

the Chairman's Sprint Prize (HK-I) in the final stages and

stake a claim as the world's top sprinter, beating Hong

Kong's Lucky Bubbles by a neck, with another length

back to Strathmore.

With victories in Hong Kong and in the Lightning

(Aus-I) in February, Chautauqua has a chance to win the

$1 million Global Sprint Challenge bonus, given to any

horse that can win a designated race in three countries.

His next possible targets are the King's Stand and the

Diamond Jubilee, both group Is at Royal Ascot in June.

United States challenger Mongolian Saturday, the

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT) winner, finished ninth.

One race later, Maurice (Screen Hero) won his sec-

ond major Hong Kong contest. Running for the first time

since the Hong Kong Mile (HK-I) in December, Maurice

sprinted away in the stretch to win the Champions Mile

(HK-I) from Contentment and Packing Pins. BH

GALILEO DAUGHTERS DOMINATE GUINEASBy Clive Webb-Carter

Seven-time leading sire Galileo had an exceptional

weekend in Great Britain and Ireland.

Not only did Minding lead home a 1-2-3 in the One

Thousand Guineas (Eng-I) for him, he was also the

broodmare sire of three worldwide stakes winners

April 30, including Two Thousand Guineas (Eng-I)

winner Galileo Gold.

Minding also became the first Newmarket One

Thousand Guineas winner for her sire, meaning Gali-

leo has now sired winners of all five British classics.

The One Thousand Guineas, in which Ballydoyle

and Alice Springs chased home Minding, repeated

the finishing order of last season's Moyglare Stakes

(Ire-I). It was not the first classic in which Galileo sired

the first three—in the 2014 Irish Derby (Ire-I), Austral-

ia led Kingfisher and Orchestra.

Galileo has made a particularly strong start to this

season with seven stakes winners, four bred on the

Galileo/Danehill cross. Minding, who is out of Dane-

hill Dancer's dual group I winner Lillie Langtry, be-

came the seventh classic winner out of a Danehill-line

mare.

Saturday also produced a new stakes winner for

the Galileo/Danehill cross: Apple Betty, a full sister to

Magician, won a listed event in France. BH

LADY SHIPMAN NO WORSE FOR WEAR IN RETURNBy Tom LaMarra

Ranlo Investments' Lady Shipman bounced back

strongly from her Dubai trip with an impressive

victory in the License Fee Stakes May 1

at Belmont Park.

The 4-year-old Midshipman filly,

bred in Kentucky by Randall Lowe,

made short work of three challengers

in the six-furlong stakes for fillies and

mares. Lady Shipman, under Irad Ortiz

Jr., broke from the outside post, dueled

with Shrinking Violet for more than a

half-mile, and pulled away to win by 2

3/4 lengths in 1:07.49 on a turf course

rated “good.”

Zindaya, last of four early, finished

second with Shrinking Violet third and

Vicki's Dancer fourth. Lady Shipman

paid $3.10 to win as the heavy favorite.

"She was training great up to this

race and ran great," said Joe Lee, assis-

tant to trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. "You

never know how much a trip like that,

shipping there (Dubai) and back, will

impact a horse."

Lady Shipman, now 10-for-15 lifetime, finished

seventh of 13 in the Al Quoz Sprint (UAE-I) on grass

March 26. McLaughlin took over the filly's training

from Kathleen O'Connell for 2016. BH

BEN'S CAT A WINNER IN 10-YEAR-OLD DEBUTBy Tom LaMarra

The Jim Stable's Ben's Cat is headed to Pimlico to

try to win a fifth Jim McKay Turf Sprint May 20

after winning his 10-year-old debut in an open allow-

ance turf sprint May 1 at Laurel Park.

Ridden for the first time by Trevor McCarthy,

Ben's Cat, a Parker's Storm Cat gelding bred in

Maryland by owner and trainer King Leatherbury,

overcame a wide trip to land the 5 1/2-furlong

event in 1:03.21 on turf rated “good.”

The victory was the 31st in 54 starts for Ben's

Cat, who ran his record to eight wins, three sec-

onds, and a third in 12 starts at Laurel.

"I was tickled with where he was early, but

on the turn he wasn't getting anywhere," Hall of

Fame trainer Leatherbury said. "It was like he

wasn't getting himself together, but then he got

himself together and, of course, fired down the

lane like a big shot. As a 10-year-old, he has never

been better."

In his previous start last November Ben's Cat

finished a dull seventh in the Fabulous Strike

Stakes on the dirt at Penn National. BH

HIGH HOPES FOR TAKE CHARGE TAPITBy Claire Novak

"Come on in and let me show you the future," Hall

of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said at his Church-

ill Downs barn May 1.

Without a contender in this year's Kentucky Derby

(gr. I), Lukas is banking on a strong crop of 2-year-

olds, including one from a brilliant line—Willis Horton

and Three Chimneys' Take Charge Tapit.

Three Chimneys bred the strapping gray son of

Tapit in Kentucky out of the Deputy Minister mare

Christie Village, a half sister to blue hen producer

Take Charge Lady (both are out of the Rubiano mare

Felicita). Three Chimneys bought Christie Village for

$460,000 from Taylor Made's Eugene Melnyk disper-

sal consignment to the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky

February mixed sale.

Take Charge Tapit, her fourth foal, was a private

purchase by Horton from Three Chimneys, which

retained 50%. Her only runner to race, the 2012

Marchfield filly Belle Chloe, was a winner in Canada.

She has a 2015 colt by Malibu Moon and was barren

in 2016.

"I saw him at the sale, and I really liked the

horse—had it vetted and all—and Three Chimneys

decided to pull it out of the sale," Horton said. "I

didn't know until they'd announced at the sale that

it had been pulled out. Anyway, I got to talking with

them and made a deal with them to own 50%. I get

to do all the racing with him, and then after racing's

over, they want to stand him. Of course, he's gotta be

good, or he won't be worth standing."

Three Chimneys' chief commercial officer Case

Clay said the colt was highly regarded from the start.

"We weren't getting a ton of action on him as it got

closer to the sale, and we've always loved him, so we

thought we'd just take him home and race him," Clay

explained. "Mr. Horton got in touch with me and said,

'We loved him,' so we said we'd love to be partners."

Horton and the Lexington operation have estab-

lished a good working relationship since the Arkansas

owner's champion Will Take Charge retired to stud

there.

"We've just kind of hit it off. We get along great

with each other," Clay said.

Lukas said that Take Charge Tapit should start at

the current Churchill meet. He also has juvenile colts

by Blame, The Factor, Mineshaft, and Curlin for Hor-

ton, along with a Giant's Causeway filly.

"I had to step up to the plate at the sale to get

them," Horton said. "I hope they turn out good." BH

FIRST WINNER FOR COILBy Alastair Bull

Dual grade I winner Coil is off the mark as a stal-

lion with his first runner at Golden Gate Fields

May 1.

A filly from Coil's first crop, Recoiling, led from

the start in the 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight

juvenile race, winning by 1 3/4 lengths from Only You

Babe (Thorn Song) and Carville (Globalize). Hansen's

first runner, Hansencat, finished fifth.

Coil, a maiden winner at 2, won three races as a

3-year-old, including the Haskell (gr. I), in which he

defeated Preakness (gr. I) winner Shackleford, and

the Affirmed Handicap (gr.II). He returned to win the

Perfect. He stands at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez,

Calif., for $5,000.

WISH COMES TRUE FOR ZENYATTA FANBy Claire Novak

A special girl met a special horse April 29 at Lane's

End Farm.

Tiana Holloway, a 9-year-old California resident

battling leukemia, heard of champion Zenyatta when

she was diagnosed. Four years later, the Make-a-

Wish Foundation's Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana

chapter partnered with Lane's End and Jerry and Ann

Moss to arrange a meeting.

"My sister sent her videos of Zenyatta, and that's

how she became a racing fan," said Tiana's mother,

Lizzie Holloway. "It's been very therapeutic for her.

We started taking her to the racetrack right after she

got diagnosed. Everyone knew she got diagnosed, so

she was kind of the 'cancer kid' at school. When she

went to the racetrack, no one knew, and everyone

treated her like a normal kid. That was very impor-

tant in helping her deal with the fact that her entire

world changed overnight."

The local Make-a-Wish chapter also teams with

Keeneland for a day at the races every year.

Tiana, who wore a shirt matching the Mosses’

racing silks, said she loves Zenyatta because she's

"so sweet." She said the visit made her feel "really

awesome." BH

ANALYSIS

GAINS IN THE JUVENILE PINHOOK MARKETBy Eric Mitchell

With four of the major juvenile sales behind

us, the market has provided enough num-

bers to take a mid-cycle look at pinhooks.

MarketWatch compiled the records on horses

offered through the four 2-year-olds in training

sales in 2015 and 2016 that also had been pre-

viously offered at auction. The 2,388 juveniles

passed through the Fasig-Tipton Florida, Ocala

Breeders' Sales Co. March, Barretts March, and

OBS April sales. Of those horses, 104 had been

only offered previously as weanlings. Since the

vast majority of pinhooks are yearling-to-juve-

nile, we focused on this group.

We next divided the yearling-to-juvenile

pinhooks into two groups. One includes both

sold and RNA prices to provide a more complete

picture of the horses' perceived market value.

The second includes only those sold as yearlings

and subsequently sold as juveniles. For

both groups MarketWatch looked only at

median sale price in order to mitigate for

the extreme highs and lows.

Overall, pinhookers fared better in

2016, with three of the four sales showing

an increase in return on investment. ROI is

the percent change between the median

2-year-old price minus the 5% sale com-

mission and the median yearling price.

The Fasig-Tipton Florida sale saw the

biggest improvement in ROI, rising to

101% this year from 78% in 2015—the first

year held at Gulfstream Park. What pin-

hookers got for their horses as juveniles

offset the higher prices they paid at year-

ling and mixed sales. The yearling median

between 2015 and 2016 rose 6.25% while

the median 2-year-old price rose 20% to

$270,000, from $225,000 at last year's

sale. The Fasig-Tipton sale was the only

auction with six-figure medians for both

2-year-olds and as yearlings for both years.

Barretts' March sale also saw a healthy

rise in ROI to 109% in 2016 from 83% in 2015.

Pinhookers at this sale benefited on both sides

of the equation. The yearling median dropped

nearly 4% to $50,000 for 2016 while the average

2-year-old median rose 10% to $110,000.

The OBS April sale was the third to experi-

ence an improved pinhook market, with the

ROI rising to 49% from 32% in 2015. Only the

OBS March sale saw a decline in ROI, which can

be attributed to increased yearling costs. The

yearling median for 2016 OBS March horses in-

creased 13.6% while the juvenile median didn't

keep pace, rising 8.3%.

Regarding the market overall, including

RNAs, the value of juveniles increased in only

two sales—the Fasig-Tipton Florida and the OBS

April sales. The OBS March median was un-

changed while the Barretts March sale—its first

year at Del Mar in 2016--dropped to $85,000

from $95,000. BH
