Prior to his marriage John Molloy, born in 1786, served in the army in the 95 th Foot, (Rifle Brigade) attaining the rank of Captain and serving with Wellington during the Peninsular Wars and at Waterloo. The Molloys sailed for the Swan River Colony on the ‘Warrior’ on 19 October 1829, arriving at Fremantle on 12 March 1830. In May that year they settled at Augusta with the Bussell brothers, the Turner family and others, John Molloy being appointed Resident Magistrate. Their first five children were born there but only three daughters, Sabina Dunlop, Mary Dorothea and Amelia Georgiana survived into adulthood. Their first daughter, Mary Elizabeth, died a short time after her birth and their son John died from drowning aged 18 months in 1837. Correspondence with Captain James Mangles led Georgiana to collect specimens of the local wildflowers and to become recognised as a renowned amateur botanist. Her specimens sent to Captain Mangles can now be seen at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. The family moved to the Vasse in May 1839 where John Molloy had already transferred his holdings and had built a homestead which he named Fairlawn. Two more daughters were born there, Flora and Georgiana. Their mother died there in April 1843 at the age of only 38, a few months after the birth of Georgiana. John Molloy survived her by 24 years and died in October 1867. During those years Sabina married Archdeacon Mathew Hale in 1848, Mary married Edmund Du Cane in 1855, Amelia married William Richardson-Bunbury in 1856 and Flora married William Locke Brockman in 1860. The collection contains some records of John Molloy’s life as a widower during which he made a visit to England where he visited some of his former army colleagues and met the Duke of Wellington. The final part of the collection consists of documents and correspondence relating to the distribution of his estate following his death in 1867, followed by notes and letters written by some of the Molloy grandchildren recalling their memories of the early days at Augusta and Busselton. Sabina Hale died in 1905, Mary DuCane in 1881, Amelia Richardson-Bunbury in 1910 and Flora Molloy in 1869. Georgiana Junior died unmarried in 1874 having been engaged to Frederick Kennedy Panter, one of three men killed by natives in 1864 while on an exploring expedition from Roebuck Bay. Georgiana Molloy was commemorated in 1979 in a brass plaque in the pavement of St. George’s Terrace for the year 1843.

MOLLOY FAMILY The collection consists chiefly of the diaries and letters of John and Georgiana Molloy, nee Kennedy, from July

1828 to 1859 and concludes with the documentation relating to the winding up of John Molloy’s estate and

the reminiscences and notes of some of their grandchildren.

Georgiana Kennedy was born in 1805 in Carlisle. She lived with friends in Scotland from 1828 until she married

John Molloy on 6 August 1829 from the home of the Dunlop family with whom she had been living. Prior to his

marriage John Molloy, born in 1786, served in the army in the 95th

Foot, (Rifle Brigade) attaining the rank of

Captain and serving with Wellington during the Peninsular Wars and at Waterloo.

The Molloys sailed for the Swan River Colony on the ‘Warrior’ on 19 October 1829, arriving at Fremantle on 12

March 1830. In May that year they settled at Augusta with the Bussell brothers, the Turner family and others,

John Molloy being appointed Resident Magistrate. Their first five children were born there but only three

daughters, Sabina Dunlop, Mary Dorothea and Amelia Georgiana survived into adulthood. Their first daughter,

Mary Elizabeth, died a short time after her birth and their son John died from drowning aged 18 months in

1837.

Correspondence with Captain James Mangles led Georgiana to collect specimens of the local wildflowers and

to become recognised as a renowned amateur botanist. Her specimens sent to Captain Mangles can now be

seen at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.

The family moved to the Vasse in May 1839 where John Molloy had already transferred his holdings and had

built a homestead which he named Fairlawn. Two more daughters were born there, Flora and Georgiana. Their

mother died there in April 1843 at the age of only 38, a few months after the birth of Georgiana. John Molloy

survived her by 24 years and died in October 1867.

During those years Sabina married Archdeacon Mathew Hale in 1848, Mary married Edmund Du Cane in 1855,

Amelia married William Richardson-Bunbury in 1856 and Flora married William Locke Brockman in 1860.

The collection contains some records of John Molloy’s life as a widower during which he made a visit to

England where he visited some of his former army colleagues and met the Duke of Wellington. The final part

of the collection consists of documents and correspondence relating to the distribution of his estate following

his death in 1867, followed by notes and letters written by some of the Molloy grandchildren recalling their

memories of the early days at Augusta and Busselton.

Sabina Hale died in 1905, Mary DuCane in 1881, Amelia Richardson-Bunbury in 1910 and Flora Molloy in 1869.

Georgiana Junior died unmarried in 1874 having been engaged to Frederick Kennedy Panter, one of three men

killed by natives in 1864 while on an exploring expedition from Roebuck Bay. Georgiana Molloy was

commemorated in 1979 in a brass plaque in the pavement of St. George’s Terrace for the year 1843.
