Initially funded by a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UM (MOLLI) is a lifelong learning program for adult learners +50. MOLLI’s goal is to create an accessible and innovative learning environment so that active older adults from all backgrounds and levels of education may pursue learning. MOLLI builds on the rich resources of The University of Montana (UM) to offer its members an array of educational and social opportunities. As a MOLLI member, you have the opportunity to:

Starting with Huffman: Photographers of Montana’s High PlainsKristi Hager

This coursewill explore three centuries ofMontana prairie landscapes by selected photographers across threecenturies:L.A.Huffman,E.J.Cameron,F.JayHaynes(1880s/early1900s);JohnVachon,JohnSmart,andothers(1940’s-1980s); Lee Friedlander, LoisConner, andothers (2000 to present).Analysis includes essays, letters andjournalsthatrevealtheuniquechallengesandprivatejubilationatsuccessunderhot,cold,windy,dusty,muddy,andlonelyconditions.Participantswilllearnto“read”photographstogainadeeperappreciationofeachphotographer’svision,bothinthebroadnotionofhowtobeintheworldandintheparticularbeautyofMontana’shighplains.

About the instructor: KristiHagerhasworked for twenty years as aprofessional photographerusing a cameramuch like L.A. Huffman’s. She taught photography at Santa Clara University and has presented programs onMontanaphotographyforHumanitiesMontana’sSpeakersBureau.Herbook,Evelyn Cameron: Montana’s Frontier Photographer,wasa2008MontanaBookAwardHonorwinner.

In thiscourse,participantswillhavetheopportunitytoexploretheircreativityinasupportiveandnon-judgmentalsetting.Throughexercisesinvolvingself-reflection/journaling,improvisation/play,andreading/discussion,participantswillfocusondevelopingandhoningtheircreativeinstinctsthroughattendingtothemselvesandtheirsurroundingworld.Additionally,theinstructor–amusician,composerandperformer–willsharetheupsanddownsofherowncreativeprocess.

About the instructor: LeeHeuermann is on the faculty at TheUniversity ofMontana School ofMusic and theWildernessandCivilizationProgram,whereshehastaughtsuchclassesasSoundintheNaturalWorld,CompositionandWomeninMusic.Lee’smostrecentcompositionsinclude“RidgeofBlueLonging”forwhichshewasthe2011recipientoftheJudithLangZaimantPrizefromtheInternationalAllianceforWomeninMusic.Additionally,shehascollaboratedwithAmyRagsdale’sHeadwatersDanceCompany.Asasinger,shespecializesincontemporarymusicandexperimentaljazz.LeehasaPhDinCompositionfromStonyBrookUniversity,aMMdegreefromtheYaleSchoolofMusic,andaBMfromtheNewEnglandConservatory.

ThisMOLLIcoursewilluseoneofthemostpowerfulformsofmedia-film-tohelptheparticipantsdevelopacross-cultural sensitivity and become cultural savvy. Film has the ability to mentally transport people to locations and remoteregions,providingauniqueinsightintothewaypeoplecommunicate,collaborate,etc.Wewillexaminebothsociotypesandstereotypesandcomparestyle,plotandcharacterstouncoverthehiddenwaysofcommunicatingcultural difference and dispelling common myths about other cultures.

About the instructor:UdoFluckwasborn,raisedandreceivedhisprimaryeducationinGermany.Duringthepastdecade,heworkedasacurriculumdeveloper,facultymember,andcross-culturalresearcherinGermanyandtheUnitedStates.In2004,UdocreatedMulticulturalLearningSolutionsatTheUniversityofMontanaandhasdevelopedandtaughtcoursesincross-culturalandglobalcompetencebuildingacrosscampus.
