Opening Activity-What do you already know about Chemical Bonding?

Think-Pair Share Cooperative Learning Activity:

On a blank piece of paper, write down 5 key concepts that you remember about Chemical Bonding. Share and compare your points with a partner.

Covalent Bonds vs. Ionic Bonds

Now that we have your brain exercised on this topic, look at the picture below and see if you remember the difference between a covalent bond and an ionic bond.

Have a look…

Here’s a catchy music video to help stimulate your memory and prior knowledge of chemical bonding….ENJOY!

* Hint: This would be an excellent hook to any lesson on chemical bonding

Here we go…

Now that you are OFFICIALLY ready, lets explore our topic today…

INTERMOLECULAR FORCES!

Overall Expectations

B1. analyse the properties of commonly used chemical substances and their effects on human health and the environment, and propose ways to lessen their impact;

B2. investigate physical and chemical properties of elements and compounds, and use various methods to visually represent them;

B3. demonstrate an understanding of periodic trends in the periodic table and how elements combine to form chemical bonds.

Here is our Lesson Sequence…

The next series of slides explores 5 lessons with supplemental material to assist you in Teaching the following topic:

Molecular Compounds and Intermolecular Forces

*Note:

* Please review our Summary Handout along with the next few slides for a more detailed outline of our Lesson sequence

Lesson 1: Super Hero Bonds

a) Students given cards with specific molecule & 3 Diagnostic Qs (see summary handouts for details)

b) Milling to music to discuss their answers

c) Students develop characters and create skits

Super Hero Covalent Bond Man & Super Hero Ionic Bond Woman:

What are your powers & strengths? What are your weaknesses?

d) presentation of skits to the class and watch video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqjcCvzWwww&NR=1

Lesson 2: van der Waals forces

a) Mind map of types of bonds to be discussed with whole class

b) Jigsaw activity for readings pgs. 109 – 112 in text

c) Computer Research for further and current knowledge

d) Presentations to class

Lesson 3: Hydrogen Bonding in everyday life

Teacher Demonstration

SOLID to LIQUID to GAS vapor

Please view the Animation on hydrogen bonding to show you the science behind the teacher demonstration: http://bioactive.mrkirkscience.com/02/ch2c4.html

Students are to do the Tutorial Quiz for evaluation purposes: http://bioactive.mrkirkscience.com/02/ch2quiz.htmlTRY THE QUIZ OUT TO SEE IF YOU CAN BEAT YOUR STUDENTS!

Lesson 4 – Mystery Scene Investigation: Exploratory Lab

Show clip of CSI to engage the students and prepare them for the lab

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NzgPNpQkno

Students divided in to groups of 2 or 3 and given unknown powders and liquids of which will be: (Powders: salt, sugar, baking soda, liquids: oil, water, vinegar, salad dressing)

PURPOSE of Exploratory Lab Investigation:

- Students are to design a Step by Step procedure for determining the type of intermolecular bonding that exists in the unknown substances found at a crime scene at a party they had recently attended.

They will need to test for:•Solubility•Melting point and •Boiling points

Teacher to ask questions relating to results after the lab is completed !

Lesson 5 : Class Debate over which Intermolecular force is most used in daily life (see summary handout for details)

Van der Walls Hydrogen Bonding1) Introduce Rules of conduct

2) Discuss necessary theories and to be debated

3) Divide the class into groups:i)Van der walls forces group: London Dispersion forces & Dipole-dipole forces ii)Hydrogen bonding group, iii)Audience (no more than 5) , iv)Judges (3) , v)Debate organizer (1)

Only person talks at a time.Debate opens with Debate Organizer followed by 3 Judges

Winner is the group that accumulates the most points given by teacher in the checklist at the beginning of the unit!

Misconceptions

Visual – Spatial & Kinesthetic learners may have difficultiesResolution: This could be addressed by using hands-on laboratories, role-play skits and moving around activities.

Students will have difficulties with abstract ideas Resolution: view videos, demonstrations, 3d models.

Special needs and Exceptional learners Resolution: adjust and modify lessons according to IEPs.
