Number 17 – August 2011 MOLD GARDENING CLUB NEWS Message from our Chairman Hi Fellow Members, It has been 2 years since our last newsletter and I know it has been sadly missed. We are very lucky that Anne Brenchley has very kindly resurrected it. Enjoy! Christine A Bishop Chairperson Coffee Morning – 3 rd September Don’t forget to come and support us in the Daniel Owen Centre this coming Saturday. We need lots of plants for sale and also homemade cakes etc. Please get in touch if you can provide any sale items or bring them along between 9-10am on the day. Highlights of the past year You have all provided us with great support over the past year and here are one or two reminders of what the club achieved. The Plant Sale raised over £95 despite the very dry spring causing all of us problems with supplying stock for the sale. The club trip to Stoneyford Nurseries and Fryers Roses Garden Centre was a great success. The beginning of our tour at Stoneyford Nurseries Stan and Christine’s Open Garden was well attended and as a result the club received a wonderful donation of £210. The Annual Dinner in January at the Red Lion in Northop was a welcome relief after all the snow and ice. Exciting programme for 2011-2012 19 September – ‘Chicken Street, a passion for plants and poultry’. Andy Cawthray from Oswestry will give an entertaining talk and bring his chickens and some plants. This, the first meeting of our new gardening year will be open to members of the public as part of the RHS Dig Together Day September programme so spread the word and bring along some friends and neighbours. 17 October – The Country Diary (in North Wales) with Jan Miller, a local author. 21 November – AGM and Entertainment This is your chance to have a say in the running of the club. Do come prepared to talk to Committee members and maybe even consider joining the committee yourselves. 19 December – Local speakers Simon and Rachel Farr will be talking about ‘Apples and Cider Making’. Mulled wine will be on offer as well as the usual Christmas light refreshments. Printed programmes will be available to members at the first meeting of the year and you will see that the meetings are equally inviting after Christmas so we look forward to seeing you. Jean Roscoe – Programme Secretary

it. Enjoy! Christine A Bishop

Highlights of the past year You have all provided us with great support over the past year and here are one or two reminders of what the club achieved.

• The Plant Sale raised over £95 despite the very dry spring causing all of us problems with supplying stock for the sale.

• The club trip to Stoneyford Nurseries and Fryers Roses Garden Centre was a great success.

The beginning of our tour at Stoneyford Nurseries

• Stan and Christine’s Open Garden was well attended and as a result the club received a wonderful donation of £210.

Club Website We have at last taken the plunge and decided to set up a club website. We know that some of you are not computer users but we do need to move with the times and for most younger people, the internet is their main source of information. We do need to let more local gardeners or potential gardeners know that we exist. The website is still in development but thanks to British Telecom’s Community Website project we are able to build and maintain this great facility for free. Do have a look at the website and we would welcome any comments or ideas for improvement. www.moldgardenclub.btck.co.uk

Summer Show – Sunday 19th July Despite the dreadful weather and a few practical hiccups at the start, we had a splendid display as usual and several new members took part. Many thanks to all of you who made the effort to come and take part or just support the club and also to Graham Wright our new Show Secretary.

Dave Giddings with the Fothergill Cup

In summary, Dave Giddings won the Fothergill Cup. Full details of all the winners can be found on the website.

RHS - Dig Together Day – we are now part of this great event Thousands of gardening clubs and societies across the UK will be taking part in the third Dig Together Day programme. Organised by the RHS, its aim is to encourage more people to garden by taking part in events organised in their area throughout September. For the first time the Mold Gardening Club will be contributing by advertising its coffee morning and the first meeting of the new year programme as fully open to the public, in particular local people interested in getting more involved in gardening. This is a great chance for the club to advertise its activities and maybe recruit some new members. So please do spread the word. www.rhs.org.uk/digtogetherday

REMEMBER – Subscriptions Subscriptions are due at the September meeting (£10 per person). Please come prepared for the first meeting you attend this season or post your subscription including all your details to our Treasurer: Mrs Adele Dodd Ystrad, Chambers Lane, Bryn-y-Baal, Mynydd Isa, Mold, CH7 6SJ 01352 753889

Finally – email addresses For the first time we have sent out this newsletter via email to those members for whom we have those details. This does help to reduce our costs so if you are on email and haven’t let us know yet, please do amend your membership details by completing a new form and handing this in at any of the meetings before Christmas. Editor – Anne Brenchley (01352 750118)
