1. Blow Moulding

Blow molding a shape is a commonindustrial process. The example shown

below is of the production of a plasticbottle. The plastics normally used in thisprocess are; polythene, PVC and

polypropylene.

1. The plastic is fed in granular form into a 'hopper' thatstores it.

2. A large thread is turned by a motor which feeds the

granules through a heated section. 3. In this heated section the granules melt and become

a liquid and the liquid is fed into a mould.

4. Air is forced into the mould which forces the plastic to

the sides, giving the shape of the bottle. 5. The mould is then cooled and is remove

in a process called injection molding.

A profile cutter is used to trim away anywaste or rough material. This is a high

speed cutter which is designed to smooththe edges so that sharp edges areremoved.

3. EXTRUSION Moulding

A machine used to extrude materials is verysimilar to the injection moulding machine above.

A motor turns a thread which feeds granules ofplastic through a heater. The granules melt intoa liquid which is forced through a die, forming along 'tube like' shape. The extrusion is then

cooled and forms a solid shape. The shape ofthe die determines the shape of the tube.

4. Shell moulding Shell moulding is a process for producing simple

or complex near net shape castings, maintainingtight tolerances and a high degree ofdimensional stability.

Shell moulding is a method for making highquality castings.

Casing

Casing is the wood trim or moulding

applied to openings such as doors,windows and archways. Casings are usedto cover the gap between the wall and the

frame. Casings are the most visible trim ormoulding and as such help define thecharacter of a room.

Hand Rails are attached along a wall to be

used as hand support along a stairwell orhallway. Hand Rails also provideprotection for walls in high traffic areas.

Nosing is the trim that creates the

rounded edge of a stair tread. Thefinished moulding covers the edge ofrisers.

Picture Frame Moulding

Picture Frame Moulding is a trim applied

to a wall near the top of a ceiling. The toplip supports hooks to hang framed picturesor decorative plates. Picture Frame
