Intended Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this module, students should be able to- Draw and name simple organic compounds and describe their bonding and associated isomerism. Describe, predict andexplain the reactivity of organic molecules using curly arrow mechanisms.- Describe the electronic origins of chemical bonding in ionic lattices, covalent diatomic molecules and hydrogen bonds.- Use the position of an element in the Periodic Table to predict its physical and chemical properties. Intended Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of the module, students should be able to:- Manipulate simple laboratory equipment and glassware and hence perform a variety of basic synthetic and analyticalpractical procedures (either individually or as part of a larger team) in a safe manner and following good chemistry laboratorypractice.- Accurately observe and record experimental details and results and appreciate the different types of errors that may occurand how to deal with them.- Interpret experimental data and report the findings in a concise written report.- Prepare, separate and purify compounds using different techniques including recrystallisation, distillation and tlc;characterise and identify these compounds using a variety of analytical and spectroscopic methods.- Employ a range of analytical techniques to determine important thermodynamic, kinetic and spectroscopic properties ofsystems, solutions and reactions.

NB: Students must pass this module at the first attempt - there are no opportunities for reassessment. This module has anadditional attendance requirement wherein students may not be absent for more than 25% of the scheduled laboratoryclasses. A limited number of “catch-up” sessions may be provided for students for whom non-attendance has been mitigated.

Teaching and Learning MethodsLectures, example problems, practical work, group problem solving classes, presentations & VLE directed activities.- In this module the importance and role of demonstrating academic integrity in academic work will be explained. Furthermore,this module upholds the university’s regulations on academic misconduct by clearly explaining to all students what constitutesplagiarism, collusion and other unfair advantages in assessment (including clear definitions and examples) and by providing afamiliarity with the penalties for academic misconduct. - The module will provide explicit guidance on how to demonstrate academic integrity, how to acknowledge the work of othersappropriately and avoid plagiarism and collusion, including explicit training in how to reference any relevant type of existingwork. This will be delivered through a combination of course materials, appropriately contextualised instruction andexperiential learning opportunities, and the compulsory completion by each student of an on-line tutorial on avoidingplagiarism, which will be recorded.

Intended Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of the module, students should be able to:- Describe the capabilities of various analytical techniques; discuss the relevance of sensitivity and selectivity to choice of ananalytical method for a specific application; use this information to critically evaluate and thus select and apply techniques toobtain the best results in a variety of situations- Describe and explain the contributions of chemical analysis to aspects of pathology, fire investigation, road traffic accidents,forensic engineering and explosives detection; describe and explain other forensic tools to analyse some of the following,documents, biometrics, gunshot residue, advanced fingerprint methods- Describe the role and limitations of analytical techniques in solving forensic problems; discuss these techniques and theinformation they provide with peers and teachers- Design and execute analytical procedures- Apply laboratory-based knowledge to the identification and collection of evidence at a crime scene.
