Determine the preferred name for a place from• gazetteers and other reference sources in a language
preferred by the agency (AACR2 “in English”)• gazetteers and other reference sources issued in the
jurisdiction in which the place is located
LC-PCC PS 16.2.2.2• For names in New Zealand, base the preferred name on
the form found in Land Information New Zealand’s New Zealand Gazetteer of Official Geographic Names
16.2.2.4 Recording the preferred name
• Record as the preferred name of a place the form most commonly found in gazetteers or other reference sources
• Apply special instructions at 16.2.2.8-16.2.2.14 as appropriate
