Mo Yan, born in 1955, Gao Mi city of East China’s Shandong province, have a place in literary world, as he was honored the 2012 Nobel Price in Literature.
Many of his novels have been adapted into films , among which “Red Sorghum” was the most well known. The adaptation is set in Anti-Japanese War(1937-1945). The main character is a woman named “Jiu’er” who was forced to marry an old man owned a distillery( 酒庄,酒肆) with illness.
On the way back home, she came across a desperate criminal named YuZhanao who fall in love with Jiu’er in the field of sorghum. A short time later, the old man was murdered mysteriously and Jiu’er became the boss of the distillery, living with YuZhanao. They were bent on making the best wine, and lived up to their dream occasionally. Good time did not last long. The Japanese army came to this area. They forced the people to work for them and if resisted, they forced a butcher to skin people alive. “Luo Han”, one of Jiu’er’s workers was killed this way. So Jiu’er decided to fight with the Japanese. They would rather die than submit to the Japanese. During the fight, Jiu’er was shorted and died, which came to the end of the film.
