Encik Aminuddin decided to teach the students the Java Programming because it is a

simple programme. He taught the students how to design a programme before they had to

do a presentation. The club members were divided into groups and then they had to design

a programme in two hours. They were asked to comment during the presentation

The course taught the club members to be creative and to cooperate with each other in

group. Many of the club members also requested the Computer Club to have another course

for this programming.

We thanked all club members for their support and hopefully we will have another course

DIRECTED AND CONTINUOUS WIRITING _______________________________________ DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

WHAT is Descriptive writing?

- Descriptive writing is to describe people, object, place, feeling and situation.

- It is like painting a picture.

- You will describe what you:

HEAR TOUCH

SEE

SMELL TASTE

- When you write a descriptive essay, remember to capture your reader’s

attention.

-

SHOW TELL

Tips on descriptive writing

i. Read and understand the instructions.

ii. Make a list of the events / incidents / others connect to the question.

iii. Brainstorm for main ideas. (3 main points)

iv. Add supporting details.(5WH-qs)

v. Brainstorm adjectives, adverbs, literary devices, idioms, similes.

- brainstorm words related to 5 senses

6

DIRECTED AND CONTINUOUS WIRITING _______________________________________ Look at these samples on descriptive essay:

Question:

Describe about yourself.

Read Sample One below:

My name is Dalilah Binti Anuar. I am seventeen years old. I live in Kampung Siputeh. I am

now studying in Form five at SMK Seri Putih. I love to eat kampong food. I also like to play

many games in the evening. One day I want to be a doctor to help my family.

(55 words)

- The essay describes about oneself but it is more to tell than to show.

- It is boring and too simple.

- Lack of adjectives and sensory words which bore the reader.

Read Sample Two:

I was born in a family of farmers where both my parents work hard to earn their living. As a

youngest in the family, I am not only been loved by them but also by my two other elder

brothers. Yes, I am the only girl and I was named as Dalilah Binti Anuar. As a student who

is going to sit for SPM this year, I know the important thing I should focus on is my studies.

Schooling is always fun and I love to be at school with my friends. We not only revise our

lesson or do our homework but also trying out new games in the evening at the new mini

stadium of SMK Seri Putih.

I stay with my family in a very peaceful village called Kampong Siputeh. My village has

many beautiful clear crystal rivers so it is normal for us the kampong girls to hang out during

weekends swimming or picnicking at the waterfall. Besides, you can still be able to feel the

cool breeze in the morning or been mesmerized with the lovely song made by the birds. That

is why I am always proud to call myself a kampong girl.

Though I love where I am staying now but I always want to pursue my studies overseas.

My passion is to be a doctor. Not only to help those who in need but also to ensure that they

will able to get the best treatment in my hospital which I dream to build one day.

(254 words)

- The essay gives you more input and it follows the tips given above right?

- It shows you who the person is rather than tells you about the person.

- It uses more adjectives than the first sample given.

- It touches on the five senses mentioned (sight, smell, touch, hear, taste)

7

DIRECTED AND CONTINUOUS WIRITING _______________________________________ Let’s try simple exercise on descriptive writing!

Question:

You and your family visited your grandparents at the village during the school

holiday.

Describe the scene of your grandfather’s village.

STEP 2: Plan your composition

Decide whether you wish to describe the village on a fine, sunny day or on a rainy day.

STEP 3: Choose details that will create the impression you chose.

Think about:

1) The time

2) The weather

3) The main activities taking place

4) The surroundings

5) Description of what you see, hears, smell, touch and taste (sensory words)

STEP 4: Draw a map to guide you

Look at the diagram below of the description of a village scene on a hot sunny day.

A VILLAGE SCENE

Sights Farmers at work

Green padi fields

Buffaloes rolling in the mud

Sounds Melodious chirping of birds

Sighing of the breeze

Rustling of leaves

Touch Heat of the blazing sun

Wind caressing the cheeks

Taste

Sweet taste of coconut drinks

Smell Smell of freshly cut grass

Fragrance of wild flowers and ferns

STEP 5: Writing the composition

Whether learning massage or traditional Chinese cooking to flower arrangement and food research, there is nothing that Jeanie has sought out to do and failed.
