INFORMATION TRANSFER _________________________________________

This question is given in Section B of Paper 2. Ten questions will be asked based on a given

stimulus, which can be in graphic or non-graphic form. Students need to find the correct

information from the stimulus.

Easy Information Transfer Steps

1. Study the stimulus carefully – read everything printed.

The stimulus can vary from advertisement, notice, brochure, movie/book review, news

report, catalogue, factual extract and so on.

3. Read the questions first and identify the keywords you need to get your answer.

Take note of the type of questions – whether a graphic organiser, a table, or short

responses like filling in the blanks or comprehension questions.

Look for common vocabulary/ key words in the questions and stimulus (e.g. Venue,

Location, Author, Accommodation, Event, Price, Duration and so on.)

6. Answers should be short and straight to the point.

Transfer only what is needed.

8. Do not make any spelling mistakes

9. Be careful with punctuation (capital and small letters)

10. Do not lift parts of the stimulus that do not answer the question.

NARRATIVE What is a narrative essay? (Credit to Pn Jenny Ho, SISC+ PPD Muallim)

A narrative composition is a piece of writing about a story with a sequence of connected events.

It could be about a personal experience or an imagined event or events.

Features of a Narrative Composition

Plot The plot is the main event around which the story evolves.

Character(s) Who are the people in your story? If possible, give a short description of each

character.

Setting/Place(s) Decide where your story takes place. Does it take place in your

neighbourhood? The jungle? The city? A quiet village?

Events State the main events in the story

The outcome What happened in the end? Do not leave your story hanging.

Planning

How do I write a narrative essay for the exam?

1) When planning your narrative essay, remember to have a plot.

Climax

Beginning/Opening Ending/Closure

2) Plan your plots to be interesting and original. The purpose of a narrative composition is to tell what happened in your story or account.

Read your essay once through and check for the following things:

• Is the spelling accurate?

Question: Write a story about being cheated that begins with “I was having a meal in a

food court…”

I was having a meal in a food court . A young man came up to me and showed some

things that he was selling. He opened his bag that was filled with watches, pens, belts and other

things.

My eyes were drawn to a fine- looking pen. I picked up the pen and had a closer look. I

even tested it on a piece of paper that the young man put on the table. The pen was a pleasure

to write with. I decided to buy it. I bargained with the young man from RM20 to RM8. I thought I

had made a good deal when he agreed to the price.

I subsequently took out RM10 to pay for the pen. That was when I made the error of not

being careful. I got my change of RM2 and the young man gave me a box which I assumed

contained the pen. He went away after making the sale.

I went home after having my meal. When I reached home I eagerly opened the box.

What a shock it was when I discovered that the box was empty. The young man had cheated me.

It was partly my fault for not making sure that the pen was in the box when he gave it to me.

I was so infuriated that I rushed back to the food court to look for the cheat, but he was

nowhere to be found. He had disappeared. I had been well and truly cheated. Fortunately it was

not a big amount. I could live with the loss.

Exercise 1

Write a story of a spoilt teenager. End your story with : “He learnt from his mistakes and became successful in the end. ”

Introduction Introduce the setting, character and his characteristics

James was the only son in a family of

farmers. Although, their income was small,

his parents were happy and did everything to

please him. As a spoilt teenager, James did

whatever he wished. He dropped out of

school when he was 15.

1st paragraph Describe the activities of a school dropout.

James dreamt of getting rich without sweat

and toil. At first, he became a con man but

after a while, people were no longer fooled.

Desperate, James became a pick-pocket and,

later, turned to extortion. Once, James’s

mother had advised him to turn over a new

leaf. However, he was still convinced that he

could make a fortune without hard work.

2nd paragraph Describe how he got involved in crime.

James’s friend told him of a scheme that

would make them rich till the end of their

lives. They would rob a bank and escape in a

stolen lorry, abandon in outside town, and

continue their journey in a stolen van, which

they would get rid of in a disused mining pool

before crossing the border. Then, they would

live as rich men.

3rd paragraph Explain how his crime plan failed.

Before they could grab enough money, one of

the bank tellers had managed to push a

hidden alarm button. As police came

screeching around the corner, James and his

friends barely managed to flee in the lorry, but

not before a security guard ripped off James’s

mask in a tussle. James had quickly turned

his face away. Unfortunately, he had turned it

into full focus of the security camera.

4th paragraph Explain how he got caught.
