Over the last twenty years, the
handmade carpet industry has
undergone a period of development and
growth the like of which has not been
experienced for over a century. Until
recently a few companies have led the
way in creating new standards for
handmade carpets in terms of design
and material quality, however now these
standards are obvious throughout the
industry. In order to celebrate these
remarkable achievements, HALI joined
forces with Deutsche Messe, organiser
of DOMOTEX – World Trade Fair for
Carpets and Floor Coverings, to launch
the first Carpet Design Awards at
DOMOTEX 2006 in Hanover.
In November a shortlist was created in
eight categories including both
traditional and modern designs, for
whole collections and individual carpets,
as well as rewarding innovation. The
shortlisted entries were presented on a
dedicated design stand at DOMOTEX
for final judging.
The judges were: Ulf Moritz, textile
designer and “Designer of the Year
2003”, Netherlands; Alexandra van der
Sande of Cassina, Italy; Belkis Balpinar,
textile artist, Turkey; Matthew Bourne,
Christopher Farr Contemporary Rugs
and Carpets, UK; Ferdi Besim of Adil
Besim, Austria; Ron Stewart, an ex-
buyer for Liberty’s London, UK; Dennis
Dodds, architect and rug collector, USA,
and Ben Evans, Editor of HALI and MCT,
as well as DOMOTEX visitors, who also
voted for their best-liked carpet from the
shortlist. The winners received €1,000
and a trophy each. Here we present the
prize-winners and runners-up in this
special editorial section.
