Unit SummaryIn this project, students will pretend that they are a part of a business that builds mobile homes. Their boss just met with them and discussed with the

different teams in the business that there is a large problem with declining sales of current mobile homes. This means that there must be a new

design made that future home buyers will want to purchase. Each team must create a new design

that must stay in the required frame measurements and include certain parts of a home.

Each team will construct a model of the mobile home and a written description in the form of a

sales brochure and deliver an oral presentation to market the newly designed mobile home.

Standards and ObjectivesStandardsM.O.5.3.5 draw a similar figure using a scale, given a real-world situation.M.O. 5.4.1 estimate, measure, compare, order and draw lengths of real objects in parts of an inch up to 1/8 of an inch and millimetersM.O. 5.4.8. determine the actual measurements of a figure from a scale drawing, using multiple strategies.RLA.O. 5.2.02 arrange thoughts and ideas in graphic representations to plan and write a productRLA.O. 5.3.04 create an age-appropriate product that demonstrates format, purpose, and audience

ObjectivesStudents will:-Research mobile designs.-Create a design of the interior of a mobile home.-Use a design to create a similar mobile home model in size.-Create the design of a room inside their mobile home.-Present a group sales presentation of their mobile home.-Create a brochure to use as a written presentation.

Vision for UnitBy creating this unit, I want to..Engage my students in more real-life situationsMake math (measurement) more interesting and relevant to the students’ lives so they enjoy learning by using different strategies

During this unit, I want my students to..Use their higher-level thinking skills to solve real-life situationsImprove their technology and research skillsUse their collaboration skills to present a product created by all group members to a specific audience.

Page 6: Mobile Home Designers

Project ApproachesWhile working on this project, the students will..

Imagine they work for a business and apply the real-life scenarios that come along with that

Collaborate with their peers Create a newly designed product using the

recently learned math concepts to show how they can apply these concepts

Share their creative learning with an audience from another class in the form of a brochure, live model, and oral presentation

Page 7: Mobile Home Designers

21st Century LearningStudents will develop higher-order thinking and 21st century skills in this unit as they do the following:

Use the CFQs to guide their thinking of how they are going to all design different models of the mobile home

Solve a problem by creating a new model of a mobile home.

Communicate their ideas at first to their group, and after collaborating & creating a product, communicate these ideas to a larger audience for persuasion

Reflect on their research, writing, building, and thinking strategies as a group and individually, and change and/or improve certain aspects if necessary

Use different assessments throughout the project to self-assess their individual work and the work of the group, as well as include their input and critiques for different ideas throughout their groups.

Gauging Student Needs AssessmentsPurpose-To gather information about the students and if they know how to use measurement to the nearest 1/8 inch and can apply real-life situations to their imagined mobile home design business. What I want to learn from my students-I want to find out what they already know about the CFQs and what they know about measurement to the nearest 1/8 inch. How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking-I ask students to place themselves in a mobile home candidates position by asking responsive questions to solve real-world situations that occur when building a home. How the assessment information helps me & my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit-If students do not understand what they could do to solve situations when building a mobile home, I will scaffold and place them in a group in which the other members have a more clear understanding so they can help that member out. If some of the students do not get the measurement questions correctly, I will spend more time on this because that is something that they will be doing throughout the entire unit. Feedback-I would like help on my assessments to promote more higher-level thinking.

Requests for Feedback Would like ways to assess the students’

higher-order thinking skills

Different ways that students can work together besides sitting at a desk.
