900M To 950M Crossed A Holy Door This Year

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization, presented today in the Vatican press office the conclusions of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy and the Holy Father’s Apostolic Letter, “Misericordia et misera.”

The archbishop said the bull which convoked the jubilee and the apostolic letter to conclude it are the

means to “understand the value the Jubilee has had in the life of the Chrch, the objectives that were proposed, and the effects that should continue to be felt in Christian communities.”

As the bull states, Archbishop Fisichella explained, the Pope wanted us to “gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.” This was necessary, the prelate suggested, because mercy “had become something outdated, relegated mostly to popular piety and without a true value in the lifestyle of Christians. With this Jubilee, one fact is certain: mercy became the protagonist, at least for a year, of the daily life of Christians.”

Some 21 million pilgrims participated in the Jubilee in Rome. “The most numerous group consists of Italians, followed by German speakers, then the United States of America, Poland, and Spain, but also reaching Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, Venezuela, Chad, Continues on page 4

Rwanda, Angola, the Cook Islands, Nepal… in short, we can say that the whole world has come to Rome,” Archbishop Fisichella said. “As we know, for the first time in the history of Jubilees, this Holy Year had a universal nature. Doors of Mercy have been opened throughout the world to bear witness that God’s love knows no bounds. … In countries where Catholicism is deeply rooted, the percentage of faithful who have crossed the Holy Door has exceeded 80% of the total number of Catholics. … At a global level, indeed, thanks to the data provided by some important dioceses from around the world, it has been possible to estimate a participation between 56 and 62% of the total Catholic population; between 700 and 850 million faithful have crossed the Holy Door from 8 December 2015 to the month of November 2016, in the dioceses. To this, it is necessary to add the faithful who have crossed the Doors of Mercy opened in shrines and places of pilgrimage throughout the world. … In this regard, it is possible to confirm that the largest shrines have recorded an average flow of three million faithful; for instance, the shrine of Krakow has been a place of pilgrimage for five million Catholics; the shrine of Santiago de Compostela has beaten the 2010 record for visits; the shrine of Guadalupe has seen the presence of around 22 million pilgrims. The sum of these data, therefore, is a total figure of more than 900 to 950 million faithful who have crossed the Holy Door around the world.”

“Finally, let us not forget that this Jubilee has journeyed also on the Internet! The site realised in seven languages has received more than 6,523,000 visits … and there are more than eight million subscribers to the site. … A word should also be mentioned for the Jubilee Volunteers who came to Rome. There were more than 4,000, of whom 1,800 of the SMOM were dedicated exclusively to the health service in the four papal Basilicas. They came from 36 different countries, and the eldest was 84 years old, whereas the youngest was aged 18.”

CELEBRATED AND LIVED

He went on to affirm that “to understand whether the Jubilee had had the desired effect, it is necessary to refer to the Apostolic Letter Misericordia et misera, in which we read: ‘Mercy cannot become a mere parenthesis in the life of the Church; it constitutes her very existence, through which the profound truths of the Gospel are made manifest and tangible. Everything is revealed in mercy; everything is resolved in the merciful love of the Father.'”

“The two pillars on which the structure of the Letter rests are the fact that mercy demands to be celebrated and lived. Starting from this, pastoral guidelines are given which will be very useful for the planning of the life of Christian communities around the world. First and foremost, the celebration of mercy. It is worth noting that Pope Francis, in these pages, offers concrete indications that have already been reflected in the Jubilee celebration. A first novelty is that the Missionaries of Mercy are confirmed in their service, so that it may ‘continue until further notice as a concrete sign that the grace of the Jubilee remains alive and effective the world over’. Indeed, the action of the Missionaries has been very fruitful; they have confessed for entire days, and they have travelled from one place to another in their respective countries to touch by hand that mercy that knows no bounds.”

Related: Three Priests Selected for the Pope’s Special Group of Confessors Reflect on Their Mission “In the same way, Pope Francis writes, ‘lest any obstacle arise between the request for reconciliation and God’s forgiveness, I henceforth grant to all priests, in virtue of their ministry, the faculty to absolve those who have committed the sin of procured abortion’. As is well known, absolution of this sin was reserved to bishops who, from time to time according to the circumstances, Continues on page 5

granted the faculty to priests in their respective dioceses. From now on, ‘in virtue of their ministry’, that is, for the very fact of being ministers of reconciliation, the sin of abortion may be absolved by any priest, without the need for any particular proxy. With the same spirit of reaching out to respond to the needs of the faithful, the Pope, ‘trusting in the good will of their priests to strive with God’s help for the recovery of full communion in the Catholic Church’, established that those who attend churches officiated by priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X may validly and licitly receive the sacramental absolution of their sins”.

There is also an initiative that, reaching further to the pastoral plans of the dioceses, will involve “giving greater space to the Word of God” by dedicating an entire Sunday to the Word of God, “so as to appreciate the inexhaustible riches contained in that constant dialogue between the Lord and His people”.

With regard to the second pillar of the Apostolic Letter, he observed that it focuses mostly on living mercy in its social character. “In this context he proposes a World Day of the Poor, as a commitment for all the Church ‘to reflect on how poverty is at the very heart of the Gospel and that, as long as Lazarus lies at the door of our homes, there can be no justice or social peace”.

“In this letter, Pope Francis does none other than deepen the theme, dear to him, of mercy as an essential dimension of faith and Christian witness”, concluded Archbishop Fisichella. “The provocation to reread the traditional corporal and spiritual works of mercy in the light of the new poverties of today’s world, are a concrete invitation for Christian communities and every believer to give space to the creativity of mercy, to give rise to a ‘culture of mercy based on the rediscovery of encounter with others, a culture in which no one looks at another with indifference or turns away from the suffering of our brothers and sisters’”.

EOHSJ Retreat – Sydney July 2017 H.E. Justice Francois Kunc, Lieutenant of Australia-NSW, has advised that recently appointed Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator to the Latin Patriarchate and formerly Custos to the Holy Land, has agreed to lead a Retreat for members of our Order. The Retreat will be from Friday 28 July to Sunday 30 July in Sydney at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney. All members of the Order from Australia and Pacific Lieutenancies are invited to attend the Retreat. The Retreat will be a unique opportunity to meet with His Grace Archbishop Pizzaballa whose previous responsibility as Custos brings deep insight in to the needs of the Holy Land. It is also an opportunity to meet with and strengthen the fraternal bonds to our confreres in regional Lieutenancies. The experience can only deepen our Faith and strengthen our commitment to the mission of our Order.

With The Sensitivity Of The Mother Of God

The mystery of Bethlehem occupies our hearts these days, and Pope Francis invites us to live it united to the present day of the world. " Peace for women and men of the beloved Holy Land, chosen and favored by God , " he declares in his message Ubi et Orbi , Continues on page 6

the day of the Nativity of the Lord. "May Israelis and Palestinians have the courage and determination to write a new page of history, in which hatred and vengeance give way to a willingness to jointly build a future of reciprocal understanding and harmony," he added, By invoking peace and harmony more widely for all populations that are victims of conflict in the world, in particular for children. "Let us allow ourselves to be challenged by the Child in the manger, but let us also challenged by children today are not lying in a crib or petted for the affection of a mother or a father ", also he said during the Christmas Mass in the Basilica of San Pedro, turning our eyes towards the children "who lie in the underground refuge to escape the bombing, on the sidewalks of a big city, in the bottom of a barge full of emigrants…” The next day he meditated on "the power of love" that leads God to become man in Jesus Christ, proposing to pray for all the children of the world, "especially for those who are deprived of the joy of childhood because of hunger, Wars and the selfishness of adults." This insistent call of the Holy Father agrees with what the Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre has asked us during this time , wanting to commit ourselves ever more spiritually for the intentions of the children of migrants in the Holy Land aided materially by our Pontifical institution. Think of them with the sensitivity of the Mother of God , bowing, lowering ourselves, making small curb his weakness, away from those "luxuries of appearance" reported again by the successor of Peter during the recent celebrations. Let us go - thanks to these children - to Jesus, let us go with confidence, in the simplicity of life. May our interior attitude coincide with that of the Virgin Mary, contemplating the divine presence that attracts us with her tenderness. In this way we can witness with her a humble God who loves and makes himself close to everyone.

The Order Against The Plight Of The Children Of Migrants

The humanitarian situation of emigrants in the Holy Land is critical and the Order of the Holy Sepulcher is committed to help them through activities and facilities offered by the Vicariate of Santiago for Hebrew-speaking Catholics. Indeed, more than 60,000 emigrants are Catholics and represent an important part of the face that has and will have the Catholic Church in Israel. Legal problems, poverty, the need to work and the absence of a place to leave their children allows a complicated context is believed forcing parents to leave their children in hazardous "deposits babies" (for more information click here on the right) . The Order of the Holy Sepulcher wants these children to begin their lives in a way that avoids suffering and promote their rights to reach their full development as human beings. That is why we support the promotion of childcare services that ensure an environment acceptable to babies between three months and three years. There are currently around 100 babies cared for daily, which gives these children a chance in life, applying a healthy model of child care so that it can be adopted by others. We also promote afterschool programs where children can receive appropriate help to cope with the workload at school, thereby providing a safe space where children can be accommodated when the parents meet still at work. For the celebrations of the Nativity of the Lord, Cardinal Edwin O'Brien, Grand Master, wishes to recall the activities that the Order sustains for the service of such young emigrants so that all members may live inwardly Christmas in communion with these children Who today give an African or Asian face to the Child Jesus, thus manifesting the universality of the Church. With our constant contribution, the Grand Magisterium of the Order can send an important amount each year to support this solidarity action in favor of the migrant children and by that means, to help all their families.

There are about 227,000 immigrants in Israel of which 45,000 are asylum seekers (asking for refugee status without being able to get it ). 75,000 are legal migrant workers, 15,000 have lost their legal status after their expiration and more than 90,000 are those who come as tourists and stay to work. About 40% live in and Around Tel Aviv. Few migrant workers obtain permanent residence. The children of migrants who are born in the country, who speak Hebrew perfectly and who are part of society do not have any status.

In Israel, asylum seekers are the most precarious since they have no rights, sometimes not even work legally. Many of them are Eritreans and a large number of people, especially women, have been victims of torture, rape and mutilation, when they were in the hands of human traffickers. Since 2007, Israel has only recognized four individuals with refugee status. Thus, this population does not have access to social security or social assistance and above all do not have regular leave to work.

The situation is terrible but it is even worse for the weakest: the sick, body and soul, and children of the breast. In southern Tel Aviv, they live in slums and in situations where discrimination and poverty, despair and violence are mixed. Among the most tragic consequences is the outbreak of the "deposits babies.” Babies under the age of three are "stored", more than 60 babies between one month and three years old, in rooms completely dark, stacked with each other, tied

completely dark, stacked with each other, tied with diapers so that they do not move and thus to be watched by One or two adults without experience. Many have died in recent months of this abuse. Children are malnourished and do not really care about them. The lack of a true food encloses them in a mutism. The storage of these small lives allows the mothers to work and thus to continue living.

When these children reach three years come into educational structures supervised by the State, and are severely punished because they have not been encouraged to develop as normal children. The tragic lack of human contact during the first months of their life leads inexorably to motor, linguistic, emotional and behavioral delays, as well as diminished cognitive and physical functioning. That can be the beginning of generations of suffering. Once these children enter the Israeli school system, they need help to keep up with their classmates.

Meet The First Australian Female Lieutenant Of The Catholic Church’s

Oldest Order Of Knighthood

BRISBANE dentist and lawyer Monica Thomson is already a gender trailblazer.

Last weekend at St Stephen’s Cathedral, Dr Thomson was installed as the first Australian female lieutenant of the oldest of all the Orders of Knighthood in the Catholic Church.

After 20 years as a dame of the Queensland chapter of the legendry Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, she adds a black cape and a gold mantilla to her hooded robes to distinguish herself as the new chapter leader.

Her robes were blessed during the installation by Brisbane Archbishop Mark Coleridge.

“I am very proud to be the first woman in Australia, and the seventh worldwide,” Dr Thomson, 65, mother of three sons and grandmother of eight, said.

“I was one of the original members when our chapter was formed and I hope to carry on the good work during my term as lieutenant.”

Knights and dames of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre are devoted to building up the faith and practice amongst members, and sustaining the spiritual, charitable and social works of the Church in the Holy Land including Israel, Palestine and Jordan.

They donate as individuals rather than fundraise, and worldwide the order has raised $50 million for hospitals, schools, parishes, social centres and universities in the Holy Land. Dr Thomson has already made several pilgrimages there.

They donate as individuals rather than fundraise, and worldwide the order has raised $50 million for hospitals, schools, parishes, social centres and universities in the Holy Land. Dr Thomson has already made several pilgrimages there. The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre goes back to the first knights that were established by Godfrey de Bouillon around the Sepulchre of Our Lord as a guard of honour immediately after the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099.

Ancient order: (Left) The Knights and Dames of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem at St Stephen’s Cathedral with Archbishop Mark Coleridge, Bishop Joseph Oudeman and concelebrating clergy. They were approved as an order in a Bull of Approbation by Pope Paschal II in February 1113. In 1888, Pope Leo XIII authorised the order to give women similar honours as men. As a result Dames of the Holy Sepulchre share the same rights and privileges as knights of the order including licence to ride a horse – should they wish – into a church or cathedral. Dr Thomson said she would not be taking up that ancient right. “I’ve only ever ridden once or twice. I am not a horsewoman, but I do like to go to the races,” she said. Dr Thomson (née O’Dea) was one of six children. She was born and educated in Fortitude Valley and attended St Patrick’s and All Hallows’ School.

Continues on page 9 First, Dr Thomson graduated in dentistry, and married David, also a dentist and a knight of the order.

She went on to rise to the top of two male-dominated professions. First, Dr Thomson graduated in dentistry, and married David, also a dentist and a knight of the order. While a practising dentist, Dr Thomson became the first woman appointed to a dental board in Australia. It was then that she studied law to help with her board work. She went on to practise as a barrister in the 1990s before returning to dentistry. She now works in both private practice and as a senior clinical supervisor at the Dental School at the University of Queensland.

Installation: Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre Grand Prior of Australia – Queensland Lieutenancy Archbishop Mark Coleridge presents the first female Lieutenant of the Queensland Lieutenancy Dr Monica Thomson with her decree from Cardinal O’Brien while Fr Adrian Farrelly holds the gown. “People ask me which I prefer – dentistry or law. I would have to say they are different,” she said. “The main difference is that as a dentist I’m in control. As a barrister, you’re standing in front of a judge and they’re in control.” As Lieutenant of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, Dr Thomson sees one key role as continuing to raise donations from amongst the 100 Queensland chapter members in Brisbane and Townsville.

“We have probably sent over in the past four years $35,000 a year – all donations. We don’t fundraise,” she said. Some of the funds go to supporting a small school in the West Bank town of Ramallah, about 10km north of Jerusalem. Dr Thomson said the funds went to buying books, paying teachers and just keeping the school running. The order also supports a new university in the Jordanian city of Madaba.
