Meditations on Holy Mass

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B) First reading: 1 Kings 17.10-16 CCC 2583 The widow made a little cake and brought it to Elijah. Second Reading: Hebrews 9.24-28 CCC 519, 662, 2741; 571; 1013, 1367 Christ appeared once for all to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. Gospel: Mark 12.38-44 CCC 678; 2444 The poor widow has put in more than all the rest. In the first reading, the sacred author portrays a poor widow, filled with deep confidence in God’s mercy. She was at the end of her resources, yet she was moved to sacrifice her only food that she had for her son and herself. She trusts Elijah, the Lord’s messenger, and she feeds him. God rewards this trust with abundance of food, not only for the prophet, but the entire household as well. In his Gospel, St. Mark recalls another poor widow, this woman a daughter of Israel, who selflessly gives all that she had to the service of God, sparing nothing for herself, serene in her faith in God’s providence. In the second reading, the sacred author teaches that God is never outdone by human generosity and selflessness. In the eternal sacrifice of Christ Jesus, God gives us redemption from sin, union with the Trinity, and reconciliation with one another. In return God asks us to surrender our will to the divine purpose. Before Mass: I tell you solemnly, this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed to the treasury. (Lauds) After Mass: From the little the widow had, she has put in everything she possessed, all she had to live on. (Vespers)

(Vespers)
