“The message here is simple, direct, and a vitally important advo-cacy for libraries – the fun and enjoyment of a visit to the librarybeing conveyed in the bold, bright pictures painted from Lulu’sviewpoint. It's vital for all children to see characters who look similarto themselves: that Lulu, the central character in this story is black, istherefore particularly welcome.”

Books for Keeps

“This book is a useful addition to the book world in this day when libraries are threatened with closure. There have been story booksbefore based on library visits but this one is especially good. It is ahappy, optimistic story - a most worthwhile book which should be inall libraries and schools and would be a welcome addition to manyhomes. I truly recommend it.”

✹ A warm story that will help any new big sister or brother to look forward to the arrival of a sibling;

✹ A pint-size role model for young readers everywhere, Lulu is keen to share herenthusiasm for books with her new brother;

✹ Not every ‘new baby’ story needs to deal with rivalry - here the positives are emphasised and Lulu’s family show how preparing Lulu with some stories andsticking to her bedtime story routine helps her adjust to her new role;

✹ The charming illustrations perfectly capture the little girl’s enthusiasm for books and stories, and paint a lovely picture of her book-loving family.

Lulu becomes a big sister in her latest story celebrating books and reading.From bath time to bedtime, Lulu knows just the right book to read to hernew baby brother Zeki.

This warm story deals gently with the disruption caused to a young child by the arrival of a new sibling. But Lulu’s family are role-models too,using books about new babies to prepare Lulu, and making sure they stillhave time for her and her stories once baby arrives.So, it is no surprise that Lulu believes every problem can be solved bya story - inspirational!

“Oranges”Gary Soto grew up in the 1960s in the sunny US state

of California, where lots of oranges are grown. In this poem, the oranges and their warm, vivid colour help Soto to express his feelings of happiness.

The first time I walkedWith a girl, I was twelve,Cold, and weighted downWith two oranges in my jacket.December. Frost crackingBeneath my steps, my breathBefore me, then gone,As I walked towardHer house, the one whosePorch light burned yellowNight and day, in any weather.A dog barked at me, untilShe came out pullingAt her gloves, face brightWith rouge. I smiled,Touched her shoulder, and ledHer down the street, acrossA used car lot and a lineOf newly planted trees,Until we were breathingBefore a drugstore. WeEntered, the tiny bellBringing a salesladyDown a narrow aisle of goods.I turned to the candiesTiered like bleachersAnd asked what she wanted -Light in her eyes, a smileStarting at the corners

Of her mouth. I fingeredA nickle in my pocket,And when she lifted a chocolateThat cost a dime,I didn’t say anything.I took the nickle fromMy pocket, then an orange,And set them quietly onThe counter. When I looked up,The lady’s eyes met mine,And held them, knowingVery well what it was allAbout.

Outside,A few cars hissing past,Fog hanging like oldCoats between the trees.I took my girl’s handIn mine for two blocks,Then released it to letHer unwrap the chocolate.I peeled my orangeThat was so bright againstThe gray of DecemberThat, from some distance,Someone might have thoughtI was making a fire in my hands.

Gary Soto’s parents were working-class Mexican Americans. He worked in the fields when he was young to raise some extra money for the family. When Soto was at high school, he became motivated to work hard at his studies. He went on to gain a degree and then study poetry. As well as teaching at universities in the USA, Soto has volunteered as a teacher for Spanish speakers who want to learn English.

Rich Romans lived in large houses. Slaves did the hard work. They did not get paid for this work.

Slaves were bought and sold. Children of slaves became slaves, too. People captured by the Roman army became slaves.

An owner could beat his slaves. If a slave ran away, an owner could chase and kill the slave. Killing a slave was not murder.

Some slaves were lucky. They were treated well. Kind owners set slaves free. They did this to thank the slaves for good work.

No one would choose to be a slave. Maybe being a Roman soldier was better?

TAKING ACTIONMost schools in the South remained segregated after Brown v. Board of

Education because forcing change through legal cases was slow. From

the mid-1950s onwards, more and more civil rights protestors took direct

action to try to speed up change. Direct action is when people carry out

public acts that disrupt or break the law in order to raise awareness of an

issue. Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a public

bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955 was an early example. The NAACP

planned this action, and used Rosa’s arrest to spark a boycott of city

buses. After 13 months of lost business and bad publicity, the state made

segregation illegal on its buses.

Other famous examples of taking action for civil rights in the 1950s include

the Little Rock Nine. Nine black children, including Melba Pattillo, tried to

attend a white-only school in 1957. The resulting violence and protests

from people against segregation led to the US government stepping in to

force the governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, to desegregate its schools.

prevented the Little Rock Nine going to school: www.hrc.utexas.edu/

ORVAL FAUBUS1910–1994

BORN: Combs, Arkansas

ROLE: Governor of Arkansas from 1954 to 1967. In 1957, he ordered the National Guard to stop black children going to Little Rock High School to keep law and order. US President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered government troops in to protect the Little Rock Nine so they could attend school.

Did You Know?Faubus ended segregation in Arkansas on state public transport when first elected governor.

WHO IN HISTORY

DANGERIt is difficult to imagine now how strongly some white people felt about civil

rights campaigners in the 1950s. Many were members of groups such as

the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The KKK was a terrorist organization whose actions

included firebombing homes and churches, and lynching. Lynching

involved a mob seizing, beating, and usually violently killing people. In

1957, for example, the KKK offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who killed

one of the Little Rock Nine.

HISTORY DETECTIVES: sourcesDiaries, interviews, autobiographies, and photos are primary sources, or records of events created at the time under study. Secondary sources are interpretations and analyses of primary sources. They are usually created by people who weren’t there at the time. Examples include books, biographies, and films. Secondary sources can provide good overviews to direct research, but a range of primary sources can add details and bring the past to life.

On 1 March 1999, inhabitants of the small village of Château-d’Oex in Switzerland watched as a tall, silver-coloured balloon rose into the sky and floated away. The tiny gondola (cabin) beneath it carried Swiss aviator Bertrand Piccard and British balloonist Brian Jones. The balloon was called Breitling Orbiter 3 and its mission was to fly around the world.

 Hot-air ballons rise when the air inside them is heated, so that it becomes lighter than the cold air outside. The balloon is then carried along by the wind. In 1978, three Americans crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a balloon. In 1995, millionaire aviator Steve Fossett (see page 13) ballooned across the Pacific Ocean. Only one great ballooning challenge remained – to circumnavigate (or circle) the globe, without touching down.
