12 THINGS TO NOTE AS MSU PLAYS EASTERN KENTUCKY Monday's game officially marks the 100th season of Mississippi State basketball. In his first 13 seasons at the helm, Rick Stansbury has led Mississippi State to a 10-3 ledger in season openers, including an 8-2 mark at Humphrey Coliseum. All-time, the Bulldogs are 77-22 in lid-lifters and have won 21 of their last 26 dating back to the 1985-86 campaign. Rick Stansbury currently ranks 11th in the SEC with 272 wins, six behind Ray Mears (Tennessee) and Roy Skinner (Vanderbilt) for the 9th most. The Bulldogs concluded exhibition play 2-0 and averaged 95.5 points and allowed just 66.5 points. Brian Bryant paced MSU with 16.5 points, while Arnett Moultrie was tops in rebounds at 11.0. He also had two double-doubles. The last time MSU played Eastern Kentucky was Rick Stansbury’s first season at the helm in 1998-99. The Nov. 7 season opener is the earliest ever for MSU, topping the previous mark of Nov. 10, 2007 vs. Louisiana Tech. Dee Bost, who was tabbed preseason first-team All-SEC by the media, enters the season just 65 assists shy of setting the school record 514 held by Derrick Zimmerman (2000-03). The Colonels return two starters from last year’s 15-16 squad. After four-consecutive years of winning 20-plus games and advancing to post-season play, MSU failed to do both in 2010-11. The Bulldogs have finished .500 or better in SEC play five years in a row and nine out of the last 10 years. Kristers Zeidaks has been ruled ineligible this year and the first 11 games next season. MSU HAS BEEN DOMINANT VS. OHIO VALLEY FOES Mississippi State has posted an all-time record of 23-2 against teams that comprise the Ohio Valley Conference. The most common foe for the Bulldogs is UT Martin (6-1), a team they play later this season month on the 25th. The last OVC team MSU faced was Tennessee State in last year’s opener, 75-65.

NOVEMBER DOMINANCE UNDER STANSBURY Including last year’s 4-1 mark, the Bulldogs are 49-17 (.742) in the month of November since Rick Stansbury was named head coach. Dating back to the 1986-87 season when Richard Williams was over-seeingMthe program, Mississippi State owns a composite ledger of 75-20(.789) in November.

MSU ENJOYS MORE NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS Including last year’s 8-6 mark in non-conference action, Mississippi State has compiled a 142-49 (.744) record against non-conference oppo-nents during the Rick Stansbury era (since 1998-99), including a 132-39 (.772) regular-season mark.

MISSISSIPPI STATE’S RECORD WHEN . . . During the Rick Stansbury era, the Bulldogs are: 211-38 when lead-ing at halftime; 153-37 when shooting 45 percent or better from the field; 229-72 when the opposition shoots less than 45 percent from the field; 211-80 when out-rebounding or tying opponents; and 165-31 when hold-ing opponents to 65 points or less.

BOMBS AWAY . . . AGAIN AND AGAIN In 2009-10, Mississippi State set a single-season record with 296 made 3-pointers, an average of 8.2 an outing. In 31 games last year, the Bulldogs were nearly on the same pace, having drained 246 of their 680 attempts for an 7.9 average.

1,000 POINT CLUB WELCOMED NEWEST MEMBERS On Feb. 9 against Arkansas at Humphrey Coliseum, junior guard Dee Bost became the 33rd MSU player to score 1,000 points for a career. He reached the milestone with 3:34 left in the first half on a 3-pointer that tied the game at 25-apiece. In the season opener against Tennessee State, senior guard Ravern Johnson became the 32nd member of the 1,000-point club.

Meet the head coach

Rick Stansbury, 14th year

Consistency is a key ingredient to the recent success enjoyed by the Mississippi State University basketball program, one that is stressed in the players’ daily activities on and off the basketball floor that has translated into the program’s recent run of national promi-

nence gained under head coach Rick Stansbury. That consistency was brought to the forefront three years ago when MSU’s 14th-year head basketball coach became the all-time winningest basketball coach in school history, surpassing Richard Williams’ mark of 191. Now with a 13-year coaching record of 272-154 at the Bulldog helm, the 10th-most wins in SEC history, Stansbury has guided 10 State squads (6 NCAA & 4 NIT) to postseason tournament appearances and nine clubs to 20-plus wins campaigns. MSU has averaged 21.3 wins the last six years (2006-11), including winning an outright SEC overall championship in 2004, along with back-to-back SEC West crowns in the 2003-2004 and 2007-2008 seasons an another in 2010, and SEC Tournament titles in 2002 and 2009. Most recently, Stansbury piloted last year’s 17-14 State squad to a second place finish in the Western Division, but missed out on a post-season berth for the first time in five seasons. From 2001-05, he guided MSU to five-consecutive postseason tournament appearances for the first time in school history, including a streak of four straight NCAA Tournament berths from 2002 through 2005.

MSU KNOWS HOW TO WIN GAMES AT ‘THE HUMP’ Over the course of the last decade, Mississippi State’s Humphrey Coliseum has become a difficult venue for opposing teams. With the 12-5 mark last year, the Bull-dogs have reached twin-digit home wins during each of coach Rick Stansbury’s 13 seasons at the MSU helm. Mississippi State is now 160-42 (.792) overall at Humphrey Coliseum under Stansbury’s direction, including a 76-28 (.731) SEC mark and a 84-14 (.857) record against non-conference opponents. The Bulldogs have compiled a 35-season composite record of 366-140 (.725) at “The Hump” since Mississippi State’s basketball facility opened prior to the 1975-76 campaign.

MISSISSIPPI STATE BASKETBALL GAME 1: EASTERN KENTUCKY

Mississippi State 97Florida Tech 63Humphrey Coliseum l 2 p.m.Starkville, MS

For a 6-foot-3 guard, Mississippi State’s Brian Bryant has some hops. Bry-ant jammed home a couple of ram-rattling dunks and added three 3-point baskets en route to a game-high 21 points as the Bulldogs raced past Florida Tech, 97-63. MSU pulled down 54 rebounds, shot 51 percent from the floor and blew open a once-tight game to win thanks to a 27-13 run to open the second half after leading 40-33 at the break. MSU received three double-doubles. Arnett Moultrie had 19 points and 11 re-bounds. Renardo Sidney had 11 points and 11 rebounds. In 21 very strong min-utes off the bench, Wendell Lewis added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Florida Tech hung tough through the first 20 minutes. With MSU struggling to find offensive consistency early, the Pan-thers built out leads of 16-12 and 20-16. The Bulldogs then found some hustle on the defensive end. Arnett Moultrie rammed home a dunk. Dee Bost then got a steal at midcourt and fed Moultrie for another easy dunk.

Defending NAIA champions Pikeville kept it close for a half, but Mississippi State dominated in the second en route to a 94-70 win. Led by 17-point performances by fresh-man Rodney Hood and Jalen Steele, the Bulldogs outscored the Bears 54-32 in the second half. A three by Hood five minutes into the second-half sparked a 20-4 run for the Maroon and White, as they jumped out to a 19-point lead and never looked back. MSU’s starting lineup put up solid per-formances, including one double-double from Arnett Moultrie, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Renardo Sidney had 12 and 5 rebounds. Dee Bost put in a strong, game-leading 32 minutes with 16 points, 4 assists, and 5 steals. Brian Bryant deliv-ered 12 points. State took the early lead with a Bryant free throw, but a three by guard Jamar Board with 16:05 left in the first gave Pikeville its largest lead of the game at six. At the break, MSU led 40-38.
