A technology gala held at I- Factory in Nanshan District, the summit was convened by two technology media properties — TechCrunch from the United States and its partner TechNode in China. Having worked at the Shenzhen hardware accelerator for four years, Joffe has gained great insights and knowledge about investing in startups that make hardware products. He was invited to be one of the speakers introducing the ecology of Shenzhen’s hardware industry and to give advice to both Chi- nese and foreign startups. Among all of the startups that HAX Shenzhen has incubated, 80 percent come from other countries. Thanks to Shenzhen’s special hardware ecology, featur- ing a quick and comprehensive supply chain, these foreign startups can produce proto- types of their products in less time and with less money than in their home countries. Since their products are made in Shenzhen, these startups usually maintain close ties with the city, and some even set up branch offices here. However, Joffe doesn’t suggest that all startups stay in the Chinese market unless their products are suitable. “It’s quite rare for foreign startups to stay and enter the Chinese market,” Joffe told the Shenzhen Daily. But there are also exceptions, like a window- cleaning robot produced by a foreign startup doing well in the Chinese market because of the number of windows on skyscrap- ers that need to be cleaned. According to Joffe, another successful case is a British com- pany called Milksafe, since they test milk formula and in China, a lot of parents are worried about the quality of milk powder. On the other hand, when Chi- nese startups want to expand their business to overseas mar- kets with a global vision, it’s not the technology that counts, but whether the products meet the local demand. Joffe gave an example of a Chi- nese startup they had incubated, which was producing a robot for maker education. The startup grew from one Chinese founder from Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi Province, into a company with 400 employees. It has gained popularity in demanding mar- kets like Japan. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s a high-tech product; customers or business partners care about what the products can do,” said Joffe. After working at the hard- ware accelerator for four years and helping with more than 200 projects, Joffe believes that hardware development is in the middle of a global industrial revolution with increasingly advanced technologies being used to make products. “Now, the products are more and more high-tech. Before it was like more hobbyists, makers and nonprofessional people. But now lots of people with master’s degrees, Ph.D.s and people with years of experience in industries are doing hardware products,” said Joffe. There is an increasing number of foreign startups coming to Shenzhen and also more Chinese startups in Shenzhen are becom- ing more innovative, he said. “The advantages of Shenzhen are the speed and the supply chain that covers early proto- types all the way to millions of products.” (More on P3)

MARKET DEMAND KEY FACTOR FOR MARKET DEMAND KEY FACTOR FOR STARTUP SUCCESS: HAX PARTNERSTARTUP SUCCESS: HAX PARTNER

MARKET demand is a key factor in the success of a startup in its target markets, said Benjamin Joffe, a partner with the glob-ally renowned hardware accel-erator HAX Shenzhen, at the TechCrunch Summit yesterday.

A technology gala held at I-Factory in Nanshan District, the summit was convened by two technology media properties — TechCrunch from the United States and its partner TechNode in China.

Having worked at the Shenzhen hardware accelerator for four years, Joffe has gained great insights and knowledge about investing in startups that make hardware products. He was invited to be one of the speakers introducing the ecology of Shenzhen’s hardware industry and to give advice to both Chi-nese and foreign startups.

Among all of the startups that HAX Shenzhen has incubated, 80 percent come from other

countries. Thanks to Shenzhen’s special hardware ecology, featur-ing a quick and comprehensive supply chain, these foreign startups can produce proto-types of their products in less time and with less money than in their home countries.

Since their products are made in Shenzhen, these startups usually maintain close ties with the city, and some even set up branch offi ces here. However, Joffe doesn’t suggest that all startups stay in the Chinese market unless their products are suitable.

“It’s quite rare for foreign startups to stay and enter the Chinese market,” Joffe told the Shenzhen Daily. But there are also exceptions, like a window-cleaning robot produced by a foreign startup doing well in the Chinese market because of the number of windows on skyscrap-ers that need to be cleaned.

According to Joffe, another successful case is a British com-pany called Milksafe, since they test milk formula and in China, a

lot of parents are worried about the quality of milk powder.

On the other hand, when Chi-nese startups want to expand their business to overseas mar-kets with a global vision, it’s not the technology that counts, but whether the products meet the local demand.

Joffe gave an example of a Chi-nese startup they had incubated, which was producing a robot for maker education. The startup grew from one Chinese founder from Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi Province, into a company with 400 employees. It has gained popularity in demanding mar-kets like Japan.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s a high-tech product; customers

or business partners care about what the products can do,” said Joffe.

After working at the hard-ware accelerator for four years and helping with more than 200 projects, Joffe believes that hardware development is in the middle of a global industrial revolution with increasingly advanced technologies being used to make products.

“Now, the products are more and more high-tech. Before it was like more hobbyists, makers and nonprofessional people. But now lots of people with master’s degrees, Ph.D.s and people with years of experience in industries are doing hardware products,” said Joffe.
