In Mawson Lakes we live in a virtually litter-free environment. Council keeps us clean, but I also frequently see local residents bending down to pick up rubbish and dropping it in the nearest bin. It warms my heart, and it’s a strong sign that we love where we live. With the coming of Easter and the school holidays rubbish multiplies, particularly plastic and fast food containers, so when you are outdoors living the good life, do your bit to clean up as you go; and even clean up after others.

Beauty may bring happiness, but happiness always brings beauty

Community Inclusiveness

How strong is the sense of community in Mawson Lakes and how well do we integrate with the surrounding suburbs?

These questions were the focus of a research project that Alice Bitmead (pictured) set out to answer last year. She interviewed several key players in Mawson Lakes and she came up with 5 recommendations to make Mawson Lakes more socially inclusive. You can get a copy of her report from [email protected]

From my point of view, Mawson Lakes is already socially inclusive, not an exclusive enclave, as some may claim, but a place of welcome and engagement for all. Indeed, I meet people from near and far who come here to use professional services, walk around the lakes, play golf, join clubs, undertake courses, attend functions and use the parklands and facilities. See the story in this issue about a new rowing club that is drawing people from all over Adelaide. Go to page 16.

One afternoon when I was walking around the lake I spotted a young friend from Sydney playing canoe polo on the water. Craig Hutchinson was the Australian Canoe Polo Champion. “Craig, what are you doing here?" I exclaimed in surprise.

Bird hazards at airportsUndeveloped land surrounding airports means that many species of birds share the same territory with aeroplanes. Bird strike is a serious safety hazard for flight operations so Adelaide Airport is trialling a new way to repel birds from airports, including Parafield Airstrip. A new laser device simulates physical danger to the birds, causing them to fly away to protect themselves. This technology does not endanger the birds. It is a sustainable and environmentally responsible method for wildlife hazard prevention. Local heroesWhat a thrill to read that two residents of Mawson Lakes received awards for outstanding citizenship on Australia Day (MLL/Feb). We have many community-minded people in ML who make a difference. One that I want to recognise is John Wilmot who lives at Trinity Green. John gives generously of his time and skills (retired accountant) both within the suburb and beyond. Here in the retirement village he has created and maintains several beautiful front gardens that bring great pleasure. Also every month without fail he hand-delivers copies of Mawson Lakes Living to every letterbox in Trinity Green and beyond. Electronic libraryWe are fortunate to have a good quality library in ML. I’m a big borrower and I love the new speedy system for borrowing and returning books. I was recently out in a Mawson Lakes restaurant when I spied a familiar name on the wine list. I remembered reading a review on Not Your Grandma's Rosé in MLL/Feb so I just had to try it. It’s a collection of short, often homely anecdotes, charmingly told, about the life of a young boy in the north of England, about his work, his love for Sandra and their family, his coming to Australia and, most of all, about his lifelong involvement in marathon-running, kayaking, cycling and other demanding sports. Good mannered menI’ve always liked SA men. I find them full of charm and good manners. My admiration received affirmation when I went to the Open Day at the new Convention Centre in the city. I took my trolley and filled it with goodies at the Made in SA Exhibition, so it was a heavy load I was towing. To leave the tall building and get to street level I discovered I had to negotiate a seriously steep bank of concrete steps. A young man who was bounding up the steps saw me at the top contemplating the perilous descent. He stopped and said: “Could I carry your trolley down for you?” I was delighted at his offer and said, “What good manners you have; where are you from?""South Australia," he said, smiling proudly as he turned to ascend once again. Water contamination

He has found that some drugs are more persistent than others, and trace amounts of these compounds can remain in the soil and water for long periods. Investigation into the ecotoxicity of illicit drugs and metabolites on aquatic and soil organisms shows unpredictable genetic changes with sustained exposure.

Scientists in Mawson Lakes are concerned that low levels of illicit drugs could be making their way into the nation’s water supplies and compromising the food chain.

Pandian Govindarasu of the Cooperative Research Centre for Contamination Assessment and Remediation of the Environment (CRC CARE) and The University of South Australia (UniSA) has spent the last three years determining the concentration of illicit drugs and their metabolites in the environment. He is now evaluating the potential ecotoxicological impacts.

He said that cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in Australia, followed by amphetamine-type drugs such as methamphetamine, ecstasy and cocaine. “These drugs, when taken, are eliminated from the body in urine and flushed down the toilet. People who manufacture these drugs also illegally get rid of the waste in sewers and stormwater drains.”

While most of the drugs go through wastewater treatment plants, some of them escape the treatment process, Mr Govindarasu explains.

Additionally, drugs that are thrown out with domestic waste end up in landfills, and can leach into the soil.

Mr Govindarasu who is doing research for a PhD has identified a pattern of illicit drugs and metabolites in Australian soil and water and examined their degradation pattern.

Parks and Playgrounds in Mawson Lakes

A new FREE book that details the parks and playgrounds of Mawson Lakes has been released this month.

In a suburb of close-knit urban development, Mawson Lakes has a defining feature. It has a magnificent green heart.

Our parks and playgrounds are everywhere, and there are many places to go for excitement, celebrations, reflection, relaxation and solitude - from the wide expanses along Dry Creek Linear Park to pocket-sized playgrounds tucked away in suburban streets.

There are walking paths, cycling trails, picnic areas, bird watching

lookouts and secluded nooks surrounded by natural bushland that provide a tranquil connection with nature. And for our four-legged friends there is a popular dog park.

A Parks and Playgrounds in Mawson Lakes

Mobara ParkGarden Terrace, Mawson LakesA lakeside park with three themed gardens celebrates the bond between City of Salisbury and its Japanese sister city, Mobara. Open grassed areas, playground, tennis courts, public toilets and City Beach volleyball courts.

Garden of Shifting Skies accentuates the broad horizontal skies and flat topography of Salisbury. This space is composed of a plane of indigenous and mown grasses, their changing colour and growth marking the different seasons.Reclining lounge seats and low concrete walls invite visitors to pause and contemplate the heavens as well as viewing the channel of water as it falls into a circular sunken space. Stepping stones, a treatment often used in Japan allows the body of water to be crossed.

Garden of Fields emphasises the city of Mobara’s agricultural heritage. A diagonal field of colourful iris and cosmos, mown grass and gravel refers to the human patterning of the landscape. A timber deck traverses the field and marking the entrance to the third garden is a cluster of bright red poles, a colour often associated with Japan.

A bronze figurative sculpture titled Nakayoshi, meaning close friend, generously donated by the City of Mobara, is located in this garden.

Garden of Blossoms is an entrance garden with rows of ornamental pears creating a threshold space at the main park entry. The trees create a semi-transparent veil that opens up as one walks further into the park. The blossom and leaf colour accentuate seasonal change. Large gently mounded circles of grass randomly punctuate the lines of trees, their whimsical forms inviting play.

Circular paving of fractured and cut stone provides a gathering space with the detail of the stone work reinforcing the importance of the park. Circular seats refer to the wholeness of the circle and its use in Japanese temple landscapes, while also relating to the wheel or cog and its role in the more recently industrialised Mobara. The sculpture, Balancing Act, by South Australian Artist Marijana Tadic heralds the entrance to the park.A Parks and Playgrounds in Mawson Lakes

Growing business through word-of-mouth

Business Network International (BNI) has started a new chapter in Mawson Lakes. The business referral organisation called BNI Prosperity will assist business growth through referral marketing.

President of the BNI Prosperity Leadership Team and Director of Activate Property and Finance in Mawson Lakes, Gary Baker, said that word-of-mouth is by far the most effective form of marketing, but business operators don’t necessarily have a system to capitalise on it. "BNI introduces business owners to each other at regular weekly networking meetings where we have a structured agenda that maximises the business passed to one another. The organisation also educates its members continually on how to grow their business."

"When one member refers a client to your business it costs you less to acquire that customer, the customers is more loyal and the transaction takes less time," said Gary.

Only one person from each profession can be a member of a chapter, for example, (one mortgage broker, one electrician and so on) so competitors are locked out.

BNI stated in America in 1985 and spread worldwide. There are 10 chapters in Adelaide with over 250 members with plans to double by the end of 2016. The Art of Learning

Look up! These large sculptures are not at ground level. They are high on the walls of the Sir Eric Neal Library at UniSA.

The Art of Learning are mullions (relief panels) created by famed sculptor John Dowie and installed on the four walls of the University Library in 1972.

The panels of wisdom represent writing, its evolution and its relation to civilisation.

On the south wall the culture is Aboriginal Australia where the beginnings of writings appear as rock-cut symbols. A prehistoric rock engraving appears between the upper and lower sculptured figures.

To the west is Egypt depicted by a scribe on top of the panel. Below is Thoth, the God of Scribes. This symbolises the key to understanding hieroglyphs, the forerunner of the alphabet.

Northward, the alphabet is represented by the letters A and B from Phoenecian through Greek to Roman. The poets Shakespeare and Sappho symbolise the literature that grew from the alphabet.

On the eastern wall are ideograms evolved by the Chinese. Confucious stands above saying: “Through books we make friends; through our friends we find understanding.”

Below him you will see the art of printing as practised in Japan and China where paper was invented.

John Dowie created four panels and these were multiplied many times so the university has 85 panels in total. Seventy two are on the external walls of the library and 13 are located inside the building and in the entrance foyer. Covering up chocolate addiction

We’ve all been there. You unwrap a chocolate block and break off just a few squares. Then you have a few more to even up the slab. Now half the bar is gone so you might as well finish off the whole heavenly rectangle.

Then the guilt begins. How are you going to explain where the chocolate went to your partner and kids?

According to a British Heart Foundation Study the answer is simple. Forty per cent of people lie about their chocolate-eating habits. The report suggests that choc addicts go to great lengths to conceal their addiction from their family.

A third of the men and women surveyed get their fix on their travel home to avoid having to explain themselves. Then there are 13% who guzzle it behind the fridge door, under the covers in bed or when their partners/kids have left the room.

Many have a secret stash of chocolate that only they know about, and a quarter hide their booty in their drawer at work.

Harmony on Main StreetA luxurious new beauty salon has opened on Main Street. Nic’s Harmony Hair and Beauty is an independently owned salon that offers luxury at an affordable price in a relaxing and cosy den.

Owner Nicole Scheffel said that good service is her main aim in business. "We listen to our customers and we want everyone who walks out to be happy."

"I’ve worked in the beauty industry in Mawson Lakes for a while and I know that people here are friendly and polite so I decided this is where I would like to set up my first salon."

Nicole employs three people to cater for a wide range of beauty treatments including a hair colour, cut and extensions, loving attention to hands and feet, waxing, massage, micodermabrasion and chemical peels. And she loves helping brides get ready for their big day.

"I’m just starting out in business so I've made a five year business plan and I have joined the Polaris Centre in Mawson Lakes to hone my business skills and take advice from a business mentor,” she said.

Rowing on the lake

If you see a rowing boat glide past you on Sir Douglas Mawson Lake it will most likely come out of the new Mawson Boat Club (MBC) which is housed in the boatshed alongside the model yacht club.

The rowing club was established a few months ago by teacher/rowing coach Jerry Elder as a venue for anyone interested in rowing, particularly young people who want to learn the sport and practice for racing.

"Rowing is a fabulous low-impact sport," said Jerry. "It develops fitness and stamina, and at the same time it teaches perseverance, time management and team work."

Nicole Walker is a Year 12 student who has been rowing for three years. She said that rowing is her way to relax.

"It gives me a break from study and I know that I have become more disciplined and organised as a result. I've learned to pace myself and not give up when the going gets tough."

The club is open to anyone over the age of 13, from beginners to the experienced. More than 20 boats are available for use from single sculls to fours. For those who have not rowed before, the club offers 'Learn to Row’ courses to local primary and secondary students as well as adults in the community. In the school holidays MBC will be running "Come and Try" programs.

Family owned and operated, La Vita offers, in my humble opinion, the best meal in town.

With a comprehensive selection of pastas and sauces made fresh daily on the premises, I was, stumped at what I should choose for lunch. Not only was I faced with an extensive selection of plain or filled pastas, cannelloni or lasagnes, there was also an array of pizzas and an all day breakfast menu to choose from. Plus an exciting specials menu, featuring salmon, steak, barramundi and calamari, served with delightful accompaniments. What an awesome choice!

But today, I was tempted by the gnocchi with rosé sauce. The bowl arrived at the table and the anticipation mounted, as the heady aroma of creamy tomato hit me full on. From the first mouthful, I was in love.

Velvety, soft, pillows of potato, married with a sumptuous and richly authentic rosé sauce, danced on my tongue then finished their number with a subtle kick of chilli. The final Ta Da! Totally brilliant.

Equally delicious was the side order of garlic bread. Not just any old garlic bread I might add. A wood-oven panini, crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, oozing with the finest Aussie butter and freshly diced local garlic and Italian parsley. Bellissimo!

And you know how I love my desserts, well that didn’t disappoint either. A fresh, custard cannoli with a robust Italian coffee. It just doesn’t get any better.

This place is the real deal. Authentic Italian. Another gem in Mawson Lakes.

Begonias by Berry van Vuuren

Recently I was given a Begonia tree affectionately known as “Marge’s Tree”. Marge died recently and her loving partner gave me her tree. I will cherish and care for it as best I can.

There are over 1200 species of Begonia, growing best in tropical or sub tropical climates. Begonias are also a popular choice in cooler climates as an indoor plant - a great way to brighten up a room.

Most begonias respond best to warm, moist conditions. The ideal temperature range is 15 to 26 Celsius though most will tolerate temperatures as high as 40C and as low as 5C - some even lower.

All begonias prefer well drained soil rich in compost or organic matter and some like some degree of shade.

A question I am often asked is do I offer a payment plan? This is a question asked by folk who have dental problems now, but don’t have money until later.

And to tell the truth, it’s not as silly as it sounds to borrow money to get your teeth fixed. Your teeth are a truly good investment. Furthermore, early intervention always means less pain, less long- term cost and inconvenience and a better health outcome. Furthermore, even for folk with dental extras insurance, maximum claiming limits can easily be met within an insurance year (usually a calendar year), leaving procedures such as cosmetic dentistry, braces or crowning of multiple teeth out of the question.

A simple google search turns up a trove of businesses specialising in medical and dental loans with the usual ‘approval in 24 hours’ and associated ‘1300’ numbers.

Some things to be mindful of if choosing to go this way are that some finance plans will tie you in to ‘participating dentists’ – therefore restricting your choice. Furthermore, even dentists who offer ‘finance’, don’t usually offer it themselves, instead you are referred to third parties who only specialise in loaning, and not your health needs.

The usual warnings apply with respect to ‘interest free’ periods or terms that appear good on the surface, but with high default penalties and high repayment interest rates further down the track.We are happy to refer where required for those needing finance for larger treatments.


Waver's house by NigellaWaver is an 11-year-old greyhound, a friend of mine who lives at Brighton in a gorgeous house by the seaside. He is now retired and his days of chasing a hare around a racetrack are over. He had several good wins under his belt, but the highlight of his career was when he was put out to breed and sow his seed all over the country for a very pretty penny.

Now his days are spent in luxury with a loving family, enjoying mornings on the beach with his owners Bill and Bev, a cool breeze on the balcony in the afternoon and a piece of quality meat for dinner every night.

It was a sunny Wednesday morning when Charlie the window cleaner arrived at Waver’s house to brighten up the joint and expose the glistening view across the Gulf. Layers of salt spray meant the job was going to take a while but Charlie was semi-retired so had all day to work on the house. He was proud of his work and hoped the job would become a regular gig.

Bill welcomed Charlie to the house and pointed out what needed to be done and also introduce him to Waver. Charlie loved dogs but had never met a retired greyhound before; little did he know how intelligent these racing dogs are. A few hours into the job, Bill said, “Hey Charlie, I’ve gotta go out for a while. Waver won’t give you any bother. Just let him have the run of the house and if he gets in your way give him the move on.”

Charlie beavered away making sure each window was picture-perfect, and as he climbed up and down the ladder Waver kept a lazy eye on him.

When Charlie made his way into the lounge room Waver followed, but he was becoming bored so he slipped out to the yard and jumped into the pool. Charlie laughed as the greyhound did a few laps of the pool and climbed out to shake off the excess water.

Next on the agenda for Waver was a roll in the freshly mulched garden and a lie in the sun before coming back to the lounge room. Before Charlie could intervene, the damp and dirty dog jumped up on the plush leather lounge and fell asleep.

After an hour of solid slumber Waver woke from his afternoon snooze and disappeared into the kitchen. Charlie watched in amazement as the dog returned with half a cooked chicken in his jaws. He lay down on the polished timber floor and devoured his lunch, then ambled back to the kitchen for a long drink of water.

Charlie began to feel a bit uneasy about the dog’s behaviour and the mess he was creating. Was he supposed to pull the dog into line, or what?

When it was time to clean the bedroom windows, Charlie found Waver stretched out on the king sized bed, so he cleaned the windows to the sound of Waver's snoring and an occasional fart.

When the job was nearly complete the owner returned, looked around the house and said, "You’ve done a great job Charlie. Was everything OK? I hope Waver didn’t get in your way." Charlie pointed to the dog on the bed, the greasy marks on the floor and the mess on the lounge, and although he was not one to tell tales, he was worried that the owner might think he had made the mess.

"Don’t worry about it," said Bill. "Waver was given to me as a puppy to pay off a debt. To our surprise he went on to win a string of races and was sought after for breeding. In total that lazy mutt has earned over one million dollars. I bought this house and all the trimmings on his earnings. As far as the wife and I are concerned this house is Waver’s house and I reckon the boy can do whatever the hell he pleases here!"

Pet Care with Jo BransonCanine Arthritis is a degenerative disease common in older dogs. The inflammation and excessive fluid causes the space within the joint to narrow, become inflamed and the bones deteriorate as they rub together. This leads to pain, lameness and muscle atrophy.

Arthritic dogs experience stiffness when walking. Jumping and lying down becomes laborious and painful.

Arthritic pain treatment includes providing cushioned bedding away from the cold, a padded ramp to get on or off the bedding, or couch. Houses with floor boards or tiles should have some runners or carpet, which provide a more stable surface to walk on preventing slipping.

Claws should be kept longer than usual as they lack the muscle tone to stay stable and aligned when walking on slippery or uneven surfaces, requiring the claw gripping action to gain stability.

Massage will stimulate the circulatory system and provide nutrients and removal of waste to the atrophying muscles and inflamed joints. Increased flexibility and range of movement will reduce tension and promote calmness which can also assist in sleep. Geocaching - outdoor adventure for the whole family

Geocaching is a fun (and addictive) outdoor treasure-hunting activity for all ages. All you need to get started is a GPS-enabled device like your smart phone, and sense of adventure! Use the free geocaching app to track down hidden caches around Mawson Lakes and beyond. In fact, there are more than two-million hidden worldwide.

Caches vary in size, shape and difficulty, from lunchbox-sized containers in your local park, to tiny

sea horses on the sea floor 2300 metres down.

There is even a geocache at Mawson’s Station in the Antarctic.

Rest assured that the majority of caches are much more accessible than these!

Introduced to geocaching over the Christmas holidays in Port Elliot, we thought we would check

out the ones around Mawson Lakes. There were a dozen or so to choose from, so we set out on a sunny afternoon to see what we could find.

It is a good idea to wear comfy walking shoes and take a hat, some water and a pen with you on your adventure. While your GPS will get you close to the cache, you need to use your detective skills and a keen eye to actually uncover the cache. As caches are hidden by different people, they are unique in shape and size. We managed to find three out of the four we looked for and then logged our names for prosperity.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our geocaching experiences so far, and look forward to finding more (and maybe hiding) caches around Mawson Lakes in the future.

$77,000 fine for speeding!!Naturally we do work for clients in relation to serious traffic offending such as drink driving, dangerous driving or driving whilst disqualified but normally we don’t get asked to do simple speeding matters.

When I was a Magistrate at the Elizabeth Magistrates Court it struck me as unfair that the fixed amount for on-the-spot fines for speeding fell heavily on lower and middle income earning families but did not deter those who can easily afford to pay the fine.

Recently I was amazed to learn that in Finland the speeding fine varies in accordance with your income. Their traffic fines are based on how much money you earn, they are not a fixed amount according to the speed. Their system is rooted in the notion that the rich will be equally deterred from speeding rather than brushing off what, to them, would be an inconsequential fine.Mr Reima Kuisla got whacked €54,000 ($77,264 AUS) - apparently about .08% of his income - for doing 103km/hr in an 80km/hr zone. In 2002, a Nokia executive, because of his income, had to pay €116,000 ($235,155 AUS ) for speeding on his motorbike!!

What do you think of the idea that the fine should be determined by your ability to pay and not some fixed amount for everyone?Finland, I am told, is a spectacular place to tour – their road safety record is fantastic. However, make sure you were unemployed during the previous 12 months if you take the risk of speeding while you are there.
