Description
SISCOs CIM Adapter for use with the PI Systemcombines the power of OSIsofts world-leadinginfrastructure for real-time performancemanagement with the application integration andcommon information exchange model capabilities
of the IEC CIM. The SISCO CIM Adapterprocesses modeling information, such as anetwork connectivity model, and automaticallyconfigures the PI Asset Framework (PI AF) forthose points that are being historized by the PIServer. The SISCO CIM Adapter organizes thePI Tags within the context of models familiar to theuser such as the IEC Common Information Model(CIM) per IEC 61970/61968 or a user-defined datamodel. The SISCO CIM Adapter can be integratedwith SISCOs Utility Integration Bus (UIB) tosynchronize the PI AF models with changes made
to the model in external systems. The SISCO CIMAdapter provides a solution for electric utilities thatenables them to leverage their existing powersystem models to better manage the complexity oftheir smart grid systems while minimizing manualreconfiguration and data handling.
Features
Works with customer defined models, modelsderived from applications, or industry standard
models such as CIM, IEC 61850, ISA, etc. Imports XML model definitions and network
connectivity information into PI AF.
Can auto-create PI Tag names based upon themodel definitions.
Supports model synchronization between the PISystem and the power system models in othersystems to enable historization of these modelchanges within the PI System environment.
Benefits
View and search for PI Tags within the context ofamiliar power system models.
Facilitates the development of reusable analysisand display applications for PI ProcessBookand PI WebParts.
Can provide automatic configuration updates
when changes are made to external models.
Supports a common integration framework thateliminates unwieldy point-to-point datatransformations and integration links.
Leverages existing Enterprise ApplicationIntegration (EAI) and middleware products suchas IBM WebSphere and others to providemaximum performance and flexibility forintegration with other enterprise applications.

The need to Organize Tags PI AF Organizes Data
The OSIsoft PI Server organizes data as an arrayof tags with history. Typically, users have
developed their own customized naming strategiesas a way of representing the relationship of one tagto another tag. The tag relationships and modelinformation can be conveyed to the user of theinformation that understands this naming strategy.Relying solely on encoded tag names makes theresulting displays and applications more highlycustomized to that naming strategy. This canincrease the complexity and cost of developingreusable generic displays and applications thatmake use of the information.
To illustrate this, imagine that a tag for statusinformation associated with a breaker in an
AIRPORT substation is given the PI Tag name ofAIRPORT_B1_001. Another breaker in the samesubstation may have a tag name of
AIRPORT_B2_003. Even though the tagsrepresent the status of breakers, the unique namescreate difficulties in developing reusable genericbreaker applications and displays.
Through modularization, object definitions are
created for each equipment type (e.g. Breakers).Particular instances of breakers become PI AFobjects with user assigned names (e.g. Breaker32)and an alias (e.g. Status) that can be referenced tothe appropriate PI Tag. Using the alias allowsapplications to be written generically (e.g. for allbreakers) without requiring prior knowledge of thespecific tags. The cross-referencing of the alias tothe PI Tag can be done algorithmically resulting in areusable generic displays and applications.
PI-AF allows model and relationship definitionsto be defined. The SISCO CIM Adapter
enhances the capabilities of your PI Systemthrough algorithmic and model centricpopulation and maintenance of the PI AF datamodel. The SISCO CIM Adapter allows formodel relationships based upon class hierarchy(e.g. a breaker is a type of switch) and instancerelationships (e.g. a breaker contained within agiven substation) to be visualized andmaintained as part of the PI System.
The benefit, to the user, is that programmingbased upon prior knowledge of tags is
minimized. Generic algorithms for displayinginformation (e.g. Status) can be programmed inPI ProcessBook and PI WebParts instead ofrelying on hard coded tag names. This willsignificantly decrease application life-cyclecosts (e.g. development, deployment, andmaintenance) because it reduces the number ofunique displays and applications that must besupported.

How it Works
SISCOs CIM Adapterconsists of: the adapter itselfand an import tool. The
software allows for modelcreation and maintenance inPI AF automatically enablingstandardized or customerdefined models to be used.
Model creation andmaintenance is performedthrough the import ofeXtensible Markup Language(XML) Resource DescriptionFormat (RDF) files whose
format has been standardizedwithin the InternationalElectrotechnical Committee
(IEC). The two formats that have been standardized allow for schema/model definitions and objectinstance information to be conveyed using these file formats formally called CIM-XML.
Automatic model synchronization and maintenance can be enabled through the use of SISCOs UtilityIntegration Bus (UIB). Using the UIB with SISCOs CIM Adapterallows changes made in an externalmodel to be automatically delivered to PI AF and to other applications as well (e.g. network applications,GIS, EMS, and others). The model repository can contain model information relating to standardmodels (e.g. CIM, IEC, ISA, etc.), customer defined models or models residing in other applicationssuch as GIS, EMS, PSS/ODMS, and other network modeling applications and tools.
The Result
Users of PI AF, and other PI AFapplication tools, will have the abilityto view the relationship betweenmeasurements and equipment basedon the model. The SISCO CIM
Adapter creates and maintains the
various relationships specified by themodel definition. As a result, it isnow possible for a PI AF applicationto locate a transformer that iscontained within a substation withouthaving to know the PI Tag names inadvance.
