Who we are:

Milton Keynes Play Association is a registered charity, operating in

Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas. Our role is to support play

development, primarily in the voluntary and community sector. We

achieve this through sharing skills and knowledge, providing low cost

resources, service delivery and representation.

The team would like to welcome you to the 2012/2013 training and

development programme, we have new and exciting courses, which

we hope will support your varied needs, inspire and promote a quality

play service.

Workforce development:

We work in partnership with Milton Keynes Council, and are

registered with the National Skills Academy to deliver Play &

Playwork training in the South-East. We deliver around 150 training

and development opportunities to somewhere in the region of

2,000 learners a year.

Who are our training and development opportunities aimed at?

Primarily our courses are specifically designed for those caring for

children and young people whether you work in an after school club,

school, nursery, pre-school, as a childminder or help in a community

group. However some of our management and core competence

training and development will appeal to the statutory, private or

public sector workforce.

Where does the training take place?

The majority of our courses and workshops are delivered in our training

facilities at Kiln Farm. These are self contained training suites, which

are all equipped with audio visual equipment and are air

conditioned.

Bespoke Courses

We can also arrange for training to be delivered at your setting

for any of the courses listed, tailor-made for your requirements.

Please contact the Training Team on 01908-263033 who will be happy

to discuss your needs with you.

Last year MKPA celebrated their 40th birthday and our ‘training’ was among the first activities

that the charity supported all those years ago. Forty years on around 1,000 members of the children’s workforce in Milton Keynes are taking part in our workforce development programme.

The growing interest in learning outside of the classroom

We now have a team of qualified tutors who can deliver training opportunities to support the drive towards using the outdoors as a place of learning. It is becoming well documented that

children benefit hugely from engaging with their natural spaces, not only in terms of health and wellbeing, but also in terms of their capacity to learn. At MKPA we have established a

programme to deliver forest school and outdoor learning and we offer training opportunities from basic woodland craft and fire workshops to accredited qualifications in Forest School Leadership.

‘Creativity with Confidence’ ©

As you would expect from a play organisation, we deliver a number of creative play workshops

ranging from glass painting to playing with food, making musical instruments from scrap materials to storytelling. But sometimes people want to build their confidence before they try the activity with the children, possibly build their knowledge of the materials available – What glue

do I use? What paint would be best? Also they might want to do this in an informal environment maybe over a cup of coffee or tea.

So that’s exactly what we plan to do with the launch of our new Thursday morning ‘club’. The

idea is that simple – come along, have a go at something, or bring along something you are working on, meet other likeminded people, swap ideas, have a coffee and hopefully have fun. We have a huge amount of resource on hand and the expertise to help and guide you, should

you need it. We will also be inviting friends to come in and show some new techniques, new ideas etc. So why not give it a try – you’ll find the dates, times and costs on page 21.

Everyone Can Join In (Disability Awareness) Many people have pre-conceived ideas about Disability; the term itself looks at

DISability, rather than ability. This course raises awareness, breaks down perceptions and barriers and encourages participants to adopt the social model of disability. The

course helps to create paths to solutions. Tutor – The Play Doctors

Dyspraxia Awareness

Many children are seen as being clumsy, falling over, misjudging widths or doorways, constantly spilling drinks and knocking things over. This course is not designed to

diagnose Dyspraxia but it is for those who wish to know more about the condition,

how it presents in individuals thinking and behaviour and offers ideas and practical suggestions to support.

take part in informal creative learning. There will be projects for you to have a go at and we will be

encouraging you to make your own creative decisions rather than have formal teaching although tutors

will be on hand to offer advice and support. This course is not necessarily aimed at adults working with

children, although most of the activities can be done with children, but is more of a sociable craft session,
