Peacekeeping Training Programme
Civilian staff from international and regional organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, national departments, as well as academics, researchers and students. Military personnel from national and regional contingents having different ranks and functions. Police personnel eager to serve in peacekeeping and peace support operations.
The courses build on the existing skills and expertise of participants by showing them how these can be applied in the complex context of peace operations and by providing them with the executive knowledge and additional personal skills they would require. Participants are expected to have no prior, or limited, experience in peace operations and to come from a vast and diverse demographic and professional range.
Courses are neither specialized for a particular gender or age group, nor to specific background experience and education. For advanced courses, it is highly advisable that participants have an overall understanding of the structure, components and functioning of a peace operation.
Courses are delivered in a variety of formats:• Face-to-face• E-learning• Blended approach.
The delivery format of all courses devotes particular attention to:• Interactivity: The courses involve participants ac-
tively;• Participation: The courses make the group a ‘learn-
ing body’ and apply a ‘learning-by-doing’ approach that allows participants to acquire the necessary competences to replicate the training;
• Links with practical examples: The courses apply theories to concrete situations, either through case studies, role plays, and exercises, or through the analysis of specific processes within the group;
• Links with real experiences: The courses take advan-tage of the experience, knowledge and personal resources of the participants.
Enhancing Capacity, Building Peace. The UNITAR Peacekeeping Training Programme (PTP) aims to contribute to the effectiveness of peace operations, by means of improving the preparedness of civilian, military and police personnel interested in being deployed in field missions.
PTP provides quality training opportunities made up of basic courses and more specialized advanced courses. While basic courses are designed to provide an overview of basic elements, advanced courses are intended to address specific topics in more detail.
The topics included in the courses are identified following an assessment of training needs among beneficiaries and a review of courses available at major training institutions. They also reflect trends and issues related to relevant UN Resolutions.
