The Holy Cow! CandidateThe Atlantic, Sept 1, 2005

Carlos Osorio/Associated PressIt is not unusual for prominent Massachusetts politicians to run for president. What isunusual is for one to run by appealing to the most conservative wing of the Republicanparty. But little of Mitt Romney's political career has followed a conventional path.Mr. Romney was raised in a political family. His father, George W. Romney, was amoderate Republican who ran the American Motors Corporation, served as governor ofMichigan from 1963 to 1969, and was briefly a candidate for the Republican presidentialnomination in 1968. His mother, Lenore Romney, Republican but more liberal than hisfather, later ran unsuccessfully for a Senate seat. The family also had deep roots in the Mormon church, and after beginning studies atStanford, Mr. Romney spent two years doing missionary work in France that earned him

a draft deferment during the Vietnam War. He graduated from Brigham YoungUniversity in 1971, then plunged not into politics but into business. He earned an M.B.A.and a law degree simultaneously from Harvard in 1975. He stayed in Boston, working asan investment consultant, and in 1984 founded his own investment firm, Bain Capital,

where he became a multimillionaire as he helped to start up companies includingStaples, Domino's Pizza and the Sports Authority.Read More
