Mitch the Monkey is missing you all
and he is so sad he can’t be with you
to help you learn new sounds.
We have made a deal that we will help
him until we are back at school. Here is
Mitch at school, excited to give you
clues about the new sound you are
going to learn…
Clue 1
Clue 2
Clue 3
Clue 4
Spot the clues and say the words.
Say them slowly.
Can you spot something in all the
words that is similar?
What do you think Mitch is trying to tell
you? What is the new sound?
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
Steps to Success:
I…
- Know the t and h sounds confidently- Know that when t and h are next to each other, they become one new sound
- Can read words with th in it- Can write words with th in it- Can say the th sound correctly- Can recognise the th sound- Learn how to write the th sound.
This is our learning intention (what we are learning).
These are the things we need to do, to do the task well.
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
We know now ALL the sounds for ALL the letters in the
alphabet! That is excellent!
Can you believe it though, there is a wee bit more to learn
about the sounds. We think you are up for this challenge!
When some sounds are next to each other in a word, they
change. We don’t say them as the two separate sounds we
know them as. We say them as one sound. We see two
letters, but they are one sound.
This is what we will be learning about. As we can’t be at
school to learn about this, your adult at home, alongside
teeny Mrs Adamson and Mrs Caird
will help you.
Adults – this video may help if you are unsure.
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
t hThese are two sounds we know so
well already. What are these
sounds? Can you think of any
words with these sounds at the
start? What about words which
have these sounds at the end?
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
Can you remember the song and the
action for t and h? Click on the pictures
to go to the song.
Can you show your adult?
Well done!
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
thToday we are going to be learning about the th sound. When we see
a t and a h next to each other, the sounds join together to become
one brand new sound – th.
Can you say that sound? When we make this sound, our tongue
sticks out and we rest our top teeth on our tongue. Gently blow.
Practise saying the sound - to a sibling, to an adult. Look in a mirror
and check if you can see your tongue!
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
th fIt is important we hear the difference between th, f and v because they
sound similar, almost the same. When we say th, our tongue sticks out and rests on our teeth.
When we say f, our top teeth rests on our bottom lip.
When we say v, our teeth push and vibrate against the inside of our lips.
Practise saying all three sounds. Do this in a mirror and to an adult or
sibling. Look at the next pages and be ready to say the right sound!
Practise these three
sounds here:

Look at the words (you don’t need to read them but
can if you want). Can you spot any words that have
th in them? Remember, it is only the th sound if the
t and the h are next to each other. If they are apart,
we say the sounds on their own – t, h. Which words
have the th sound at the end/beginning?
Well done! Can you spot any sh or ch words from
last week?

Have a go at this game…

OLI: We are learning the th sound.
Wow!
You have done so well! If we were at school we
would give you a sticker right now!
Have a little break and come back for some more
when your ready!
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
We are now going to learn how to
write the th sound. You know how to
write t and h…we now join them
together and write both letters before
taking our pencil off the paper.
Click and watch the video to see how
it is done.
We have learned that every letter has
a set of hands that we draw on either
side. Now that we are joining t and h
together when we write them, the
letters hold hands. Can you make the
letters hold hands?
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
Now you have a turn!
Practise writing th. Why not practise…
• on the floor
• in the air
• on a family member’s back
• with rainbow colours on paper
• with chalks outside
• on a whiteboard if you have one
• in the mud outside
• in the bubbles in the bath
• in some flour sprinkled on a plate
• in some glitter sprinkled on a plate
• making th out of playdoh
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
Try now with a pen or pencil.
You can print off the next page or you can practise on your own paper.
Remember:
✓ Sit at a table with your bottom on the seat and feet on the ground.
✓ Tuck your chair in so your tummy is touching the table.
✓ Hold your pen or pencil with tweety bird fingers.
✓ Start on the line and give it your best shot!
✓ Why not circle your favourite one blue for brilliant like Mrs Caird
and Mrs Adamson do!
OLI: We are learning the th sound.
You have worked so hard!
Finish off thinking about what
you have learned today by
watching this little clip…

you!
