Coach Mullen’s team will face its first Southeastern Conference opponent on Saturday the Bulldogs travel to Auburn to face the 1-0 Tigers. OFFENSE EXPLODES FOR MOST POINTS SINCE 2002 Dan Mullen came to Mississippi State with an impressive offensive resume - as offensive coordinator at Florida last season, his Gator offense averaged 43.6 points per game, tops in the conference and fourth nationally. So it should come as no surprise the Bulldogs posted 45 points in their season- opening victory over Jackson State. Mississippi State hadn’t posted 40 points in a game since a 51-13 win over Jacksonville State on September 14, 2002 - a stretch of 81 games. FOURTH STRAIGHT MSU COACH TO WIN DEBUT LOOKS TO BE FIRST TO WIN SEC OPENER SINCE 1986 With last week’s win over Jackson State, Mullen became the fourth- consecutive Mississippi State coach to post a win in his debut. But the last two head men at MSU dropped their first SEC contest. The last Bulldog coach to win his SEC opener was Rockey Felker, whose 1986 squad upset 8th-ranked Tennessee on the road in the second week of the season. BULLDOGS LOOK TO END ROAD WOES Mississippi State failed to win a road contest in 2008 and averaged just 9.2 points per game away from home. It was the fourth time in eight seasons the Bulldogs went winless for the year in opposing stadiums. In contrast, Mullen’s 2008 Florida offense averaged 43.6 points (218 points in five games) and were undefeated on the road. The Gators lost just four times on the road during his four seasons there. YOUTH IS SERVED IN BULLDOG OPENER The season opener for MSU wasn’t only the debut of a new coach and staff, the 45-7 victory over Jackson State was also the first appearance in game action for 33 new Bulldogs. Forty-four percent of the 75 players that saw game action were stepping onto Davis Wade Stadium for the first time in a game. A breakdown of the 33 show 9 true freshman, seven transfers and 17 players that redshirted last season saw action. DEFENSE STYMIES TIGERS, GETS OFFENSIVE TOO Defensive coordinator Carl Torbush saw his defense hold JSU to only 194 yards of total offense on 54 snaps last Saturday. Take away long comple- tions of 52 and 31 yards, the Bulldog ‘D’ held the Tigers to just over two yards per play (111 yards on 52 plays). State defenders weren’t satisfied with only stopping JSU, the group forced five (three fumbles and two interceptions) turnovers as well. The final inter- ception was returned 43 yards by Corey Broomfield for Mississippi State’s first defensive touchdown in 15 games, dating back to November 2007. BUMPHIS MAKES MOST OF FIRST COLLEGIATE GRABS True freshman wideout Chad Bumphis became just the fourth Bulldog player to start his first collegiate game since 1986 (Milton Smith, CB, 1986; Quinton Culberson, CB, 2003; Sean Ferguson, DE, 2008) and the first offensive player to do so in that time period. Bumphis caught two passes in his debut, finding his way to the endzone on each. CHANEY RETURNS AS TEAM LEADER Senior linebacker Jamar Chaney returned to play at Davis Wade Stadium for the first time since he posted a team-leading eight tackles in State’s come-from-behind victory over Ole Miss in 2007. Chaney played in last season’s opener, but his season was cut short with a broken bone in his leg. The senior leader had recorded 12 total tackles already against La. Tech. Against JSU, Chaney led the defense with five tackles. RELF SHINES IN EXTENDED WORK; LEE CONTINUES SOLID PLAY Sophomore quarterback Chris Relf had thrown just nine passes in his collegiate career entering last week’s season opener. Against JSU, the Montgomery, Ala., native completed 7-of-10 passes for 75 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 82 yards and a score on 12 attempts. Senior QB Tyson Lee - the school’s all-time leader in completion percent- age - completed 9-of-14 passes (64.3 percent) for 97 yards. MISSISSIPPI STATE VS. AUBURN - THE LAST MEETING

Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field • Starkville, Miss.

No. 9 Auburn 3Mississippi State 2

STARKVILLE, Miss. – With 7:28 left in the opening half, Wes Byrum connected on a 35-yard field goal to give Auburn a 3-0 advantage. As it turned out, that’s all the points the No. 9 Tigers needed as they relied heavily on their defense the remainder of the game to hold off a stingy Mississippi State squad in front of 52,911 fans at Scott Field, the school’s fifth-largest crowd.

For the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in Southeastern Conference play, their only points were the result of a safety that came on a holding call charged to Auburn center Ryan Pugh in the end zone with 7:06 left in the game.

The play was set up when MSU senior punter Blake McAdams pinned the Tigers at their own 3-yard line fol-lowing a 52-yard punt.

However, the Bulldogs failed to capitalize on their ensu-ing possession when they didn’t convert on fourth-and-inches at the Auburn 41 in a drive that started at the 50.

MSU also missed out on a golden opportunity early in the third quarter when Adam Carlson missed a 38-yard field goal.

But it wasn’t just Carlson that misfired on this muggy night, where the 1998 Western Division championship team was honored at the half. Byrum had two misses him-self, from 42 and 22 yards, respectively.

The Tigers, who avenged last year’s 19-14 setback on the Plains, also had three fumbles, while the Bulldogs’ lone turnover was the result of an interception thrown by sophomore quarterback Wesley Carroll, who was 10-of-25 passing for 78 yards.

State, which travels to Georgia Tech next week, man-aged just 116 yards of total offense. And it certainly didn’t help that starting running back Anthony Dixon was severely slowed with a pulled groin he aggravated early in the first quarter. He managed just five yards on seven carries, while Christian Ducre paced the Bulldogs with 49 yards on 16 touches.

Auburn (3-0, 1-0), which plays host to No. 7 LSU next week, amassed 315 yards, with 161 coming on the ground. Ben Tate did a bulk of the damage with 92 yards, 39 coming on one play in the waning seconds. Brad Lester accumulated 51 before being carted off the field early in the third with a neck injury.

The success Mississippi State enjoyed defensively can be attributed to Dominic Douglas and Jessie Bowman, who accounted for eight stops each.

Bowman’s total was a career high, and he was also credited with 3.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

As for the score, the five combined points were the fewest ever in this series, which dates back to 1905. It was also the first time MSU has been involved in a game with the final outcome of 3-2.

It was the fewest points the Bulldogs have yielded since defeating Jacksonville State 35-3 on Oct. 14, 2006.
