From Your Pastor’s Heart – Vanity and Solomon, The Man who had Everything! The Bible is SOOOO current and relevant! Everywhere you turn it speaks a fresh word to the needs of today! Romans 15:4 says, For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
The life of King Solomon is a picture of the American Church today ... a picture of what is ailing our culture and what can heal our culture! His father and the previous generations had fought the great battles to bring freedom and prosperity
to the nation. Solomon inherited that security, power and wealth and made it even greater. He started off so well! But then, in the midst of the prosperity, he found himself discontent!
He tried everything the world offered to fill that void, to bring meaning to his life. He took his eyes off the glory of God and pursued other, lesser glories – knowledge, more wealth, wine, women, worldly wisdom, building projects, all the pleasures the world could offer. He even worshipped other gods! At the end of his life, he declared ... “Vanity of vanities, says the teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity” Ecclesiastes 1:2.
In this use of the word vanity, it does not mean “excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements ... conceit, narcissism, self-admiration or self-absorption.” Rather, It means, “the quality of being worthless or futile ... useless, pointless, worthless fruitless.”
Solomon finally concluded, “When all has been heard, the end of the matter is: fear God [worship Him with awe-filled reverence, knowing that He is almighty God] and keep His commandments, for this applies to every person.” Ecclesiastes 12:13 AMP
Solomon’s wisdom eventually brought him back from his folly to the One True God. Are you still pursuing vain things? Or are you truly worshipping and obeying the One True God? That is where true life and joy and meaning are found. A great way to do that is through Holy Communion this Sunday and remembering the saints who have gone before us. One of my favorite hymns has the line “all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood.” ... If we want the glory of God, we have to sacrifice the things that are not to His glory.
See you Sunday as we honor the One who became poor so that we could become truly rich!
