I found the BSU by walking to dinner. David Kissinger (a sophomore BSUer) was yelling at me to come in and get free food. I did what I was told.
The BSU is like a magnet. Once you get attracted you can’t stop. I have found a great group of friends and a place to hang in between classes but most of all I have found a home and a family.
The BSU lets me grow in my walk and help others grow in their walk. It also allows me to invite non-believers to events rather than just talk.
If I could tell people one thing about the BSU, I would tell them that they could go there for anything, at anytime, to do anything, because it is like a home and a family.
For the first time in its history, the Mizzou BSU has relied solely on gifts made to the ministry for funding in 2008. While giving increased to all-time highs, we did receive less in gifts than was required for the ministry to continue to function. Thanks to previous years’ gifts, all funding needs for 2008 were met.

My friends Vickie Rogers and Angie Stidham got me in a freshman bible study at the BSU my first year at Mizzou. I met a lot of people and had a lot of fun.
You know, looking back, the BSU played a large role in getting me through Mizzou. Not only did it provide spiritual and emotional support and accountability, but it was a good way to escape and develop relationships.
The BSU is a critical ministry on the campus of MU. It’s a place to find your way. And when I got a letter from Jerry at the end of the year, I wanted to support the BSU. I hope I can continue to do that.

I saw the building while on a tour of MU as a high school senior and decided to try the BSU in the fall. When I came to campus, I went to the website and found out when the first event was. I came to New2MU and immediately felt at home, being greeted by some of the older members.
The BSU has given me a base to expand my faith and really take ownership in my own faith. It has also helped me develop Christian leadership skills. I have become more thoughtful and patient, which has helped me become a more genuine and caring person. I’ve become more flexible and approachable towards others, creating deeper, more caring, and more honest relationships.
This ministry has allowed me to use my skills by providing a vast amount of opportunities to participate in nearly every facet of the ministry: from planning to leading big events or trips, from acting in to producing videos and live skits, from volunteering in the community to reaching out to our campus.
I would tell people that if they feel adrift and alone and are looking for a place to belong in the masses at Mizzou, they should come join our family at the BSU, where they can find life-long relationships with people who will support them, grow them, and most of all, truly care about them.

Our roots with the BSU at Mizzou go back very far. We’ve actually had pastors at Calvary who taught at the BSU in conjunction with the university. Dr. Neiger is one of our heroes at Calvary, and his connection with the BSU goes back forty years. So the BSU has been a close ministry for us over the years.
I think the BSU is a great outreach to students. It’s challenging being on campus and competing with so many other interests for students’ time and attention. You know, the BSU is on the front lines of winning students at Mizzou. So any way we can support the ministry, we love to do that. We intened to continue to do whatever we can to help.

I was thinking about sacraficial giving. I’m really blessed as a college student, and I was thinking that I wanted to be a better giver and tither. So, I thought of an amount that I thought I could give, and then I doubled it.
I called my dad who built his own company on a principle of tithing. He’s seen a lot of spiritual growth in me. I told him what I was going to do and asked him if he would match my donation.
After I made my gift to the BSU, he matched my amount. Then when he came out to a Mizzou football game and got to experience our BSU tailgates, he matched my amount again, and covered the student expenses for tailgates for the rest of the season. So, in effect, my gift was tripled!

80 students joined us for our second annual Escape! Fall Retreat at Windermere with guest speaker Dr. Rodney Reeves, a professor at Southwest Baptist University. The theme for the weeked was that we wage war with the world when we gather to worship.
2 VISION events were hosted. These are weekend retreats designed for smaller churches and youth groups that don’t have the funding nor the staff to plan big, quality events. The April event, called Create ‘08! touched the lives of over 150 Missouri youth. Our most recent November event, Ebenezer, saw about 60 youth learning about the material reminders we have of the work that God has done in our lives (Joshua 4:20-22).
Despite new financial challenges, Mizzou BSU continues to reach out to the college students and local community of Columbia, MO. We have reason to be proud of our continuining successes. Here are just a few of the ways in which the Mizzou BSU has made its mark this past year.
Dustin Miller, Jerry Carmichael and Allan Thompson serve as BSU tailgate grillmasters.

When I was in college at the University of Minnesota, I always liked to have a spiritual, quiet place to go to and find peace. I love that the BSU is in the heart of campus. It’s important for Christians to have that place to count on.
I know that the BSU has been very important for my son Allan and Patty (Allan’s fiancée). I like the friends he’s developed and that he’s had an opportunity to grow and develop as a leader and invest in other people.
As I’ve been traveling to Mizzou for the last four years, I’ve gotten to know the ministry and the people at the BSU. I love that the BSU has the capacity to make change and the commitment and character needed to make change. Those are three non-negotiable principles for me in giving.

1990s BSU alumni joined current students and their parents for our Homecoming tailgate. We continue to celebrate Mizzou traditions and football with plenty of tailgates which are designed to be outreach opportunities for our students to invite their non-BSU friends.
135 students marked one of our highest attendances at a single Thursday night RealLife gathering. Contrary to typical trends, this year RealLife has seen attendance steadily grow throughout the semester. The goal of Thursday nights is to connect people to God, whether they are growing Christ followers or skeptical seekers. RealLifes feature Biblical Truth, practical application, authentic worship and high-energy celebration, along with light-hearted moments.
200 students, friends and family attended the two performances of our annual Christmas production. Entitled The Best Worst Christmas Play Ever, the production featured a variety of musical numbers written and arranged by staff member Stormie Dorrell and her team of student leaders.
Here, Allan and his parents, Dale & Vicki Thompson, enjoy a campus visit and tailgate before a football game.

BSU Assoc. Campus Minister
When Jerry first approached me about coming on staff at the BSU, I must admit that I was hesitant. I had spent a summer in New York City doing an internship, and part of me still wanted to pick up and head to one of the coasts! But the Lord continued to work on my restless heart. My senior year was quite tumultuous, and as I worked through everything it became even more apparent how important the BSU was in my life. The people in this ministry offered me continual love and support that helped me through extremely difficult times. I began to realize that the Lord was giving me an incredible opportunity to serve a ministry that had given me so much. I can honestly say that I haven’t had a moment of regret since I accepted the position. This year has been nothing but a blessing. Yes, ministry is difficult at times, but I wouldn’t trade these two years at the BSU for anything. :)
When you support this ministry, you help make it possible for other individuals to have some of the the same life-changing experiences that I’ve had during my time here. If I could leave you with one thought, it would be this.... I can’t imagine my life without the BSU. I thank my God, in all my prayers, for the opportunity to be a part of this ministry. And I look forward to the great things that He has in store for its future!

This ministry has been astonished by the responses to our financial needs. A total of over 152 donors contributed to this year’s efforts. Of those, 15 donors were churches or organizations and 73 were first-time donors to the BSU! We are excited about all of these new and continuing partnerships, and look forward to the year ahead.

I transferred to Mizzou my junior year, in 1991. I had a bunch of friends at the BSU, and they got me involved. For me, my time at the BSU was an opportunity to develop more of a Christian walk and relationships that are lifelong. I also had some fantastic opportunities to participate in mission adventures, as well.
I’m a volunteer with the BSU’s Board of Directors because it’s exciting to help meet the challenges we currently face. I want to help ensure that the BSU stays in the heart of campus and continues to offer opportunities for students to grow in faith and leadership.
I would tell anyone, not just students, but alumni and others, that they are always welcome to visit the BSU’s weekly worship at 812 Hitt Street at 8:12pm on Thursday nights. Great ministry continues to happen here!
