These events offer TOMS Shoes’ supporters a unique opportunity to learn about and experience the TOMS’ “One for One” mission in action. On September 8th, UALR Children International, and our partners at Wakefield Elementary, hosted a TOMS Giving Event in which every Wakefield Elementary student received a pair of canvas TOMS shoes! The Home Shopping Network (HSN) production crew was present to capture all the excitement of this great event! NATIONAL HEALTH LITERACY MONTH

Taking care of your own health is a part of everyday life...not just when you visit a doctor, clinic, or hospital! It helps you prevent health problems, protects your health, and be better prepared for unexpected situations! How familiar are you with your Health Literacy?

What is Health Literacy? The ability to obtain, communicate, process, and understand basic health information and services to make appropriate health decisions.

Who Does Health Literacy Affect?EVERYONE!

What Hinders Health Literacy?• unfamiliar with medical terms or how your bodies work• unable to interpret statistics and evaluate risks and

benefits that affect your health and safety• fear and confusion from a diagnoses with a serious

illness• health conditions that require complicated self-care• voting on an issue affecting the community’s health

and relying on unfamiliar technical information

How Can You Help Other Now?• create access to information and services others can

understand and use most effectively• help others become more familiar with health

information and services• build health literacy skills over time as well as your own

WHAT’S HAPPENING at UALR CI

MEET THE STAFF - PATRICIA DURANThe phrase “comes full circle” means to complete a cycle and return to the beginning. It’s a theory that undergirds our mission and we love to witness each circle reaching its

beginning. This circle just happens to be our “Meet the Staff” for this quarter!

We are so excited to introduce Patricia Duran, the newest member of our Sponsor Relations team! She is an UALR CI Alumni, a HOPE Scholarship recipient, a former UALR

CI volunteer, and now she’s the latest addition to the UALR CI team!

“I love working here because I get the chance to interact with children, which I love!”

Patricia’s personal mission on the UALR CI team is to see the youth take advantage of opportunities, and make decisions from which they’ll benefit.

WORDS TO LIVE BY“It’s the little things in life that count.”

Stay up-to-date with our current events!
