STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

One of St. Paul’s favorite topics was prayer, and today’s reading from his letter to the Philippians is no exception to that. He says, “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.” For Paul all topics are appro-priate for prayer because we need to share and consult with the Lord about everything.

God knows what is on our minds already, of course, but He also desires that we make a conscious effort to communicate with Him on these subjects. In addition, Paul points out that our prayers need to be infused with thanksgiving. We should not just petition the Lord and make requests. It is equally important that we think about, identify, and acknowledge our blessings.

We have often pointed out that stewardship is a life of gratitude, a way of living which encourages us to focus on gifts, not on problems and challenges all the time. If we strive to have grateful hearts, our prayers come much more easily, and we tend to be much happier and more upbeat in our lives.

The noted author, philosopher, journalist, and theologian G. K. Chesterton is well known in Catholic circles because he converted to Catholicism during his life, and was an excellent conveyor of the faith. In terms of living grateful lives he said, “I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder.” That includes thanks to God.

WE NEED 1000 PAIRS OF NEW SHOES FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH!

St. James Mission Circle and Shoes to the World are partnering to bring NEW shoes to local children in need. We are making advance preparations for our annual shoe distribution in January and could really use your help! Please take a card and envelope from the shoe tree at the entrance to the church for your contribution to this effort. $10 buys a new pair of shoes, $20 buys two pairs, and $50 buys 5 pairs of new, brand name shoes! We want to make sure that we have enough shoes to go around when the time comes, so please be generous!

Wholesale prices are rising dramatically. Do you know someone in the children’s shoe manufacturing business or a retailer who would be willing to donate children’s sized athletic shoes or sell them at a discounted price? If so, please contact Katie Hodsdon at [email protected] or 858-682-1118.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
