What Your Camcorder Can DoFor You

Your RCA Camcorder combines thefeatures of a video camera and a VHSvideo cassette recorder in onelightweight, easy-to-use unit. As a result, you can now perform all of thefollowing:

• Make your own video home movies.Tape your video memories quicklyand easily, with color and sound, oninexpensive VHS cassettes. VHScassettes are available in your choiceof 60 Min. (T-60), 2 Hr. (T-120) and2 Hr., 40 rain. (T-160) lengths. Foroptimum picture quality, yourCamcorder records and plays backtapes exclusively in the VHSStandard Play mode, known as SP.

• Play back tapes immediately throughbuUt-in electronic viewfinder. Black &white electronic viewfinder showsexactly what is being recorded duringtaping and allows "instant replays"after recording so you can reviewwhat you have taped.

• Play back pre-recorded tapes onstandard "IV or Monitor. Usingincluded cables, you can use yourCamcorder to play pre-recorded tapeson any TV. Adapters are included foruse with either a standard TV or aVideo Monitor. (Tapes must havebeen recorded in SP speed.)

• Shutter Speed Control. You canchoose from four higher shutterspeeds for recording fast-movingoutdoor sporting events.

• Choose Automatic or Manual ShutterSpeed Control. You can let theCamcorder automatically control theshutter speed for you or choose fromfour higher shutter speeds forrecording outdoor sporting events orfast-moving family action.

• Record from another VCR orMonitor. With an optional adapter, you can hookup your Camcorder toanother VCR or Monitor and use theCamcorder to record TV shows orcopy your home tapes.

• Use your Camcorder on AC or DCpower. Included with your Camcorderis an AC Adapter/Charger and aRechargeable Battery. With the ACadapter/charger attached, you canpower the Camcorder from thenearest AC outlet. With the chargedbattery attached, you can use yourCamcorder virtually anywhere for upto one hour. With an optional 12-voltDC cord, you can even power theCamcorder from your car's cigarettelighter socket.

• Create professional-looking videoproductions. Your Camcorder has thelatest convenient features to makeyour videotaping as trouble-free andenjoyable as possible. You can zoomin or out at the touch of a button. The Camcorder will adjust focusautomatically so you don't have tobother. You can easily fade in andout of a scene with the Auto IrisControl. A "quick review" button letsyou double check recording resultsand set up your next scene. What'smore, a date display lets you recordthe date on your home tapes. Forquick scene location, both visualsearch and a viewfinder tape counterare provided. There's even aviewfinder adjustment that makes iteasy to use the Camcorder if youwear eyeglasses.

• Add optional accessories for greatercreative versatility. RCA offers a fullline of compatible accessories foryour Camcorder to increase yourcreative range when making videoproductions. Some optionalaccessories are shown on pages 22and 23.

Video CassettesRCA recommends that RCA cassettesbe used with this unit. The tape in thesecassettes is of high-quality formulation. It has been manufactured to RCA'scritical specifications, for excellentperformance. Use of tape not meetingthese specifications could considerablyreduce the performance of yourCamcorder.

Use of poor quality tapes or tapes thathave been damaged or mishandled cancontaminate the video heads, resultingin a snowy picture or no picture at allduring playback. Because RCA has nocontrol over the type of tape purchasedor rented by consumers, head cleaning isnot covered by RCA's warranty. It isconsidered normal maintenance.

Playing a new RCA tape forapproximately 15 minutes will oftensatisfactorily clean the heads andimprove your picture. If a snowy picture

or no-picture condition persists, consider the use of a chemical non-

abrasive head cleaning tape (RCA StockNo. AV009W) available from yourdealer or many electronic supply stores.

Erase Protection

To prevent accidental erasure ofrecorded material, remove the safety tabfrom the back of the cassette as shownbelow. Recording is impossible whenthis tab is removed. To record again ona cassette that has the tab removed, simply cover the safety-tab hole withvinyl tape as shown.

-Camcorder Recording Tips.

Use your Camcorder's Power Zoomto help you focus manually. Beforeyou start recording, zoom in on yoursubject, adjust the POWER FOCUSButtons (.ql and I_) until you see aclearly focused image in theviewfinder, then zoom back to thedesired angle of view. Provided thesubject-to-Camcorder distance doesnot change, the subject will remain insharp focus over the entire zoomrange.REMEMBER: It's easier to makeprofessional-looking videos if youcheck the focus before you startrecording.

Keep your Auto Focus window cleanand unobstructed to help assureproper Auto Focus operation.

Try to make sure indoor scenes yourecord have sufficient light. Thisimproves picture quality and colorreproduction.

Avoid long "still" shots of landmarksand scenic attractions. Your

recordings will be more interesting ifthey include people and detail."Local color" will give your travelvideos lasting appeal. Considertaping a familiar or landmark scenefrom an unfamiliar vantage point togive your tape added interest.Remember to check your lightingbefore recording.

Use your AUTO IRIS control tofade in and out of scenes.

Practice recording under a variety oflighting conditions. This will helpprepare you to respond whenever yousee a scene you want to tape.

Try to avoid taping backlit subjectsindoors. Bright light behind yoursubject may cause it to appear verydark and low in detail. Adjustingyour AUTO 1R1S control can helpovercome this problem.

Include close-up shots of individualswhen taping a family outing or other

group functions. These close-upsmake your video memories special.

Be aware of video and audiobackgrounds. Background visualdetails you barely notice while you'retaping may show up as visual"clutter" when you review your tapedscene. Background noises (especiallytelevision sets and radios, householdappliances, traffic sounds) candetract from the sounds you want torecord. And REMEMBER: Don'tbump or tap your Camcorder'smicrophone while you're taping, because this sound will be recordedon your tape!

Don't move the Camcorder rapidlyfrom side to side while you'rerecording. A steady, gradual "pan"avoids blurring and jitter in yourtaped scene.

Keep your Camcorder level whiletaping. Otherwise, your scenes willappear tilted. Keep a close eye onthis in your viewfinder?

-Travelling Tips

Make sure you have any plugadapters you may need before takingyour Camcorder to other countries.Ask your RCA dealer for advice. This will assure that you can poweryour Camcorder and AC Adapter/Charger as needed.

Jot down your Camcorder's serialnumber and keep this note separatefrom your equipment when travelling. If your Camcorder is lost or stolen, you will be able to identify it.

Double check your equipment beforetaking your Camcorder on a trip orouting. Make sure you have with youall the equipment and accessoriesyou'll need. Compiling a checklistmakes it easy to be prepared. Bringthis Owner's Manual with you forhandy reference.

Make a list of sights and scenes youwish to record on a trip. This willhelp assure that you don't miss animportant recording. Be alert forunexpected interesting scenes as well.

Don't leave your Camcorder andtapes in a car for more than a briefperiod. Excessive heat or cold candamage them.

Use extra care and caution to avoiddamage to your Camcorder andaccessories when operating them at abeach or pool. Spray, sand and dustshould be avoided. Clean your lensgently and thoroughly if it has beenexposed to the elements. Rememberto use only proper lens cleaningsupplies available at camera stores toprotect your lens.

Carry your Camcorder in a propercase when travelling. (See Page 23 forRCA's specially designed SoftCarrying Case.) An ordinary suitcaseor carry bag doesn't offer theprotection and custom fit yourCamcorder needs. For safety, treatyour Camcorder as carry-on baggageto protect it from rough handling.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to use a"power converter" to use your ACAdapter/Charger on a power sourceother than 120 volts, 60 Hz or theAdapter/Charger may be damaged. If you plan to travel to a foreigncountry that does not use 120 volt,60 Hz power, an optional CPS04Adapter/Charger may be purchasedfrom your RCA dealer. The CPS04 isdesigned for use on 100-240 volts,50/60 Hz.

-Tape Tips

Don't try to use a tape if it has beendamaged or exposed to moisture. Thetape may jam or damage yourCamcorder.

Remember to break off the safety tabon your cassettes after making animportant recording. This will helpyou safeguard crucial tapes fromaccidental erasure.

Remember to label your tapes beforestoring them. Preparing your labelbefore you use your tape helps assurethat you will know what it contains.

Be careful not to misplace tapeboxes. These are essential for propertape storage. If a tape box becomeswet, do not use it. It can damageyour tape and Camcorder.

- Proper Care of Your Camcorder

• Be especially careful to keep dustfrom entering the Camcorder'scassette door. Dust and grit areabrasive and will cause excessivewear both of tapes and of therecording/playback heads.

• RCA recommends that RCA videocassettes be used with this unit. These tapes have beenmanufactured to RCA's criticalspecifications. Use of tapes notmeeting these specifications couldconsiderably reduce theperformance of your Camcorder.

Use of poor quality tapes cancontaminate the video heads, resulting in a snowy picture or nopicture at all during playback.

Playing a new RCA tape forapproximately 15 minutes maysatisfactorily clean the heads andimprove the picture. If a snowypicture or no-picture conditionpersists, consult your authorizedRCA Servicenter or the RCAService Company.

• To clean the lens, always use lens-cleaning tissues and acommercially prepared cleaningsolution designed for use oncamera lenses. Improper cleaningcan scratch the lens. Do not touch

the lens with your fingers[ The oilfrom your skin can damage thelens.

--Things to Avoid

• Do not attempt to disassembleyour Camcorder. There are nouser-serviceable parts inside.

• Never attempt to force open thecassette door. If the battery reachesits empty level during recording, the Camcorder will shut off but

the battery should have enoughreserve power to eject the cassettewhen you press the EJECTbutton. If the Camcorder does not

eject the cassette, do not attemptto force open the cassette door. This will damage your Camcorder. To remove the cassette, simplypower your Camcorder with theAC adapter/charger or rechargethe battery before attempting toeject the tape.

• Do not use the Camcorder inextremely humid environments.

• If you attach a video light to yourCamcorder, make sure it does notget too hot. Excessive heat coulddamage the Camcorder.

• Do not use the Camcorder for

extended periods in temperaturesbelow 40°F or above 95°F.

• Do not expose the Camcorder or

AC Adapter/Charger to rain ormoisture. If either componentbecomes wet, immediately turn offpower and take the unit to theRCA Service Company or an RCAAuthorized Video Camera/Camcorder Servicenter.

Do not operate your Camcorder ina strong magnetic field. Otherwise, you risk interference to or erasureof recorded information.

Avoid operating your Camcorderimmediately after moving it from acold location to a warm location.Give the Camcorder 1-1_ to 2hours to reach a stabletemperature before inserting avideo cassette. When moved froma cold area to a warm location, moisture may condense on thehead drum inside the machine. This moisture could cause the tapeto stick to the headwheel anddamage the headwheel or tape.

-Storing Your Camcorder

• Store and handle your Camcorderso that it is not subjected toswinging, shaking, or dropping. The Camcorder can be damagedby improper storage or handling.

• Don't store the Camcorder intemperatures below - 22° F orabove 149°F.
