A New Mission Opportunity – Sunday, May 7 Did you know it is common practice across the nation to move children’s items in black trash bags when they are being cared for in the foster care system? A suitcase is a tangible way to offer the child dignity and some belongings of their very own. Kimm Kraii and her family have started Going Places MN in an effort to give a child that sense of dignity by filling a small suitcase with items such as toothbrushes/paste, combs and brushes, lip balm, nail clipper, bath towel and wash cloth, twin size sheet set and other personal items the child can use and call their own.
Join us between services on May 7 (in Fellowship Hall) to meet Kimm and learn how we can support her mission.

Discussion on Understanding Implicit Bias: Breaking the Cycle
Saturday, April 22, 9am – 12pm, MUMC Multipurpose Room
Restorative Justice Community Action (RJCA) will host this guided discussion on Implicit Bias. This discussion is the
fourth in RJCA’s 2017 series of community forums on topics impacting our community. The previous three discussions took place at the Historic Wesley Center in Minneapolis. This is first forum to take place in the suburbs. In January,
February and March the forums centered on gaining a deeper understanding of the source and impact of implicit bias in our lives. This forum will continue that conversation and start to focus on what we can do about it. Participants
have included people from many Twin City neighborhoods - from North Minneapolis, St. Paul and the Suburbs.
Like the RJCA event last December, Dr. Nadarajan (Raj) Sethuraju will lead the discussion which will be done in
“circle” format again, but in smaller 8 person circles to allow for a deeper discussion. Raj is Assistant Professor in the School of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice at Metropolitan State University. Raj lives in Carver County and works
in the greater Twin Cities to educate on implicit bias and raise awareness of its impact on community. His community engagement includes partnering with the Saint Paul Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People (NAACP), volunteering with Restorative Justice Community Action and serving on the board of
AccessAbility Inc.
Join us for this lively and thoughtful conversation. If you have any questions, contact Fred Reuning or Pastor Tiffany.

It's all about relationships! I have been supportive of Muslim people, spoken against discrimination towards them. And yet I didn't know anyone Muslim. Certainly I regularly came across Muslim women wearing head coverings. When I would see
them, I would feel sad for them, believing that their culture holds them in submission and offers them little respect. When I would encounter Muslim men I would assume they had little respect for me as a woman, and
especially a woman clergy. Still I believed in their right to freely live out their religion in America. I knew that the violence attributed to Islam in the media certainly didn't reflect the beliefs of the vast majority of that religion.
And yet I didn't personally know anyone Muslim ... until a couple of weeks ago when we took the Minnetonka
United Methodist Church confirmation families to The Islamic Cultural Community Center in Eden Prairie where we had been invited to spend the evening interacting with, and learning from the Muslims of that community.
There were Muslim families present from the schools Minnetonka UMC kids go to, as well as families who live very near our church.
As soon as we walked in the door we were warmly greeted. We were welcomed to ask questions about the Muslim faith, and to share about our own. I was quickly introduced to the Imam, their leader. Then the entire
community gathered for a time of formal learning - members of that mosque and those of us from Minnetonka UMC. The Imam welcomed everyone and talked about how we all have the same God and are called to respect
and honor each other. He then invited me and Haley Mathison to address the group. Then there was a presentation about Islam. It was led by women, men, girls and boys. I was struck by the leadership the Muslim
women took, the honor they were shown by the community, and how strong, articulate and confident they were.
When it came time for one of their daily prayers we were invited to observe. I was inspired by the way their faith
is woven into the fabric of their daily life. At the end of our time together they invited us for refreshments. They provided a banquet of assorted foods and even gave us gift bags of treats. It was an amazing experience - a
profound experience of hospitality. I realized with joy how much we have in common with each other. We are
looking forward to inviting our new Muslim friends to Minnetonka UMC for further opportunity of knowing each other and learning from one another.
But my biggest epiphany occurred the next day. I was at a restaurant and a Muslim woman was there. Because I
had such positive interaction with my new Muslim friends, I greeted her and we shared brief conversation
together. It was totally natural; I felt no pity for her but rather a sense of admiration and appreciation. It changes everything when we get to know people. It really is all about relationships!
