those tasks? Did I buy enough supplies to get done what I need to? Did I really need all of these new supplies to get the work done?

These questions could apply to MAPA also. We have some new “supplies” – like a new website (thanks to the website committee), a new executive director (welcome Missy), and new PA programs in the state. We have a long list of to-dos-- like new obstacles to PA practice and old problems that still need to be addressed. Where do we begin and do we have the right “supplies” for the tasks? PA Week is less than a month away! This year, the PR committee has developed two main projects to promote and celebrate PAs.

Light-Rail Ads -Description: Ads in Minneapolis (Downtown East) and St. Paul (Central) stations during the entire month of October.

Objective: Increase the general public’s awareness of what a PA is, what a PA does for patients in Minnesota, and inviting people to use the PA Week hashtags #MinnesotaPA (MAPA) and #PAweek (AAPA), and contact MAPA for more information about PAs. Commuters on the light-rail and waiting at the station will have the opportunity to learn about PAs.

Impact: This will be impossible to measure, but some proxy measures would be light-rail ridership, or traffic at specific stops, MAPA website traffic trends, and folks contacting MAPA and citing the ads.

MN Loves PAs Button Campaign Description: Modeled after the George Washington PA school PA week buttons, but modified to be MN specific, including PAs and students, virtual and far-reaching throughout the entire state of Minnesota. PAs and PA students will distribute buttons and instructions to wear the buttons during PA week and submit photos to Twitter or Facebook with the PA Week hashtags #MinnesotaPA (MAPA) and #PAweek (AAPA). Each day of PA week, a winning photo will be randomly selected and a small prize distributed. These same buttons can be used again next year, as this project is intended to be repeated annually.

Objective: Increase awareness of PA role within clinical settings, and celebrate PAs at clinics, hospitals, and at the PA schools. Most buttons will be distributed to colleagues, support staff, students, clinical rotation colleagues and staff, etc. This reminds clinics and hospitals about PA week and to celebrate the PAs they employ and/or students they train. In addition, the buttons can be a conversation piece with patients to promote the PA role and celebrate PAs.

Impact: The proxy measures available to reports are number of buttons distributed, the social media activities, including number of posts during PA week, distribution of posts around the state (if able to figure this out from the photo), and feedback from PAs and PA Students involved in the project.

Apply by October 15 for Funding For the past 16 years, the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA) has been a key resource for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. A statewide non-profit comprised of a network of more than 1,000 survivors and 45,000 supporters, MOCA offers support groups, educational resources and other services for women with ovarian cancer and their families.

Besides support and program offerings for women, another main mission of MOCA is providing research funding to spur on ovarian cancer research. Since MOCA was founded, the organization has provided more than $5 million to ovarian cancer research funding, making MOCA one of the top private, non-profit funders of ovarian cancer research in the nation. MOCA also provides medical educational programs to healthcare providers and students.

MOCA is always working to expand our reach for medical education, so to help spur on even more education, MOCA offers the Anita and Walter Lubov Scholarship Fund, thanks to the generous donation from the family of Anita Lubov, an oncology nurse from Ohio who died from ovarian cancer in 1999. Her daughter, Jan Arnold, explained that her mother “saw value in education, and to honor her memory in this way is most fitting.”

Last year, a total of 5 scholarships were awarded to four nurses and one physician assistant, totaling nearly $8,000 in funding. 2014 was the first time the scholarships were extended to physician assistants, so we encourage P.A.s to apply in 2015.

Healthcare professionals who are awarded the scholarship say it’s a life-changing opportunity that impacts how they treat patients with ovarian cancer.

“MOCA’s Lubov Scholarship gave me the opportunity to attend the winter Society of Gynecologic Oncology conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, “ said Hieu Cabak, PA-C, a 2014 Lubov Scholarship recipient. “This was a wonderful experience for me. I was able to hear great lectures and learn research that is being done in gynecologic oncology. Without the scholarship, I wouldn’t have been able to attend this conference.”

Oncology physician assistants and nurses currently practicing in Minnesota can apply for support to attend conferences that will help them:

• Improve their care of women with ovarian cancer.

• Increase their knowledge of ovarian cancer.

• Enable them to educate others about ovarian cancer.

The funding can be used to support travel, conference fees, lodging and per diem. It is not meant to supplant funding available from employers or other sources. Multiple scholarships can be awarded each year.

Applications are due October 15, 2015.To apply for a scholarship award, submit your completed application to the MOCA office by email. An application can be downloaded at the MOCA website www.mnovarian.org. Contact the MOCA office at 612-822-0500, if you have any questions.

HIV Screening for Older Adults and Others with Medicare September 18 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day, an annual campaign that draws attention to older Americans aging with HIV/AIDS. Older adults are often overlooked in the ongoing HIV/AIDS conversation, yet the number of people aged 50 and older who are living with AIDS continues to grow. HIV-related challenges facing older Americans include lack of knowledge about HIV and stigma that discourages them from seeking HIV testing and care. In older adults, HIV is too often diagnosed late in the course of the infection.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for HIV infection in adolescents and adults aged 15 to 65 years. Younger adolescents and older adults who are at increased risk should also be screened, as well as all pregnant women. Medicare provides coverage of both standard and Food and Drug Administration approved rapid HIV screening tests for eligible beneficiaries: Read more.

The Legislature may be out of session, but things are jumping in St. Paul on health care. A Task Force on Health Care Financing ( h t t p : / / m n . g ov / d h s / h c f t f / a b o u t / comprised of stakeholders and Administration leaders, has been appointed. The Task Force is working to develop recommendations to improve access to quality health care services in Minnesota. The Task Force is meeting regularly and is scheduled to present a list of recommendations to the Governor and the Legislature by January 1.

Meanwhile, there is great turmoil in Minnesota’s public health care programs (MHCP), including Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare. The Department of Human Services has barred UCare from continuing to serve MHCP members effective 1/1/16. DHS also proposed barring South Country Health Alliance from 10 of its existing 11 counties. Both pay providers more than

Blue Plus, HealthPartners and Medica, their replacements, and are reported to impose less “red tape” on providers. Both UCare and South Country are appealing the DHS decision, which has stirred strong reactions from many provider organizations as well as consumers.

Finally, the 2016 presidential election has been in the headlines for weeks. The many colorful and controversial statements from Republican candidate Donald Trump have propelled him into the lead in polls of Republicans, while on the Democratic side Hilary Clinton’s one-time lock on the nomination has hit a bump over the summer. Health care has not been a hot topic in either party so far, but that may change as the campaigns progress. Minnesota’s caucuses are scheduled for March 1, exactly one week before the 2016 session begins.

UW-La Crosse Gundersen Mayo UpdateWhitney Boedeker, PA-S

It is September and officially back to school for the UW-La Crosse Gundersen Mayo PA Program class of 2017. These first year students successfully completed anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and professionalism classes over the summer and enjoyed summer break in August. Now back in the classroom, the students are eagerly diving into the first real clinical medicine coursework. We are excited to begin history and physical exam practice, along with learning medical diagnostics, evidenced-based medicine, and much more.

The class of 2016 students are currently beginning the fourth of their eleven rotations. While they miss seeing their classmates on a daily basis, they are enjoying this invaluable experience and learning to balance studying for end-of-rotation exams with busy work weeks.

UW-La Crosse Gundersen Mayo PA Program also welcomes Amie Baumgartner, PA-C to the faculty this fall. Amie comes to us with 12+ years of clinical experience and will be teaching gastroenterology and pulmonary medicine this fall.

Finally, interviews for the class of 2018 will be conducted on September 18 and October 9. All at UW-L are eager to meet the newest candidates to carry on the PA program tradition of excellence/success.

St. Kate’s UpdateNicholas Wanner, PA-S

Greetings from St. Kate’s!

As the summer months start to dwindle, there are plenty of changes occurring throughout the program.

The class of 2015 is nearing the end of their clinical phase and will begin their senior clerkships in the fall. They have also come to the final stage of our research curriculum by creating posters on their group research projects. From presenting topics like Diabetes Care in

Muslim Patients during Ramadan (Ramatu Arrington and Kaitlin Hanzlik) to the Evolution of Youth Sport Concussion Guidelines (Jocie Bonk and Kelly Comstock), the class of 2015 has undertaken valuable and informative research and hopes it can be disseminated to local, regional and national outlets.

The class of 2016 finished their Primary Care course at the beginning of August and enjoyed a relaxing summer break until September. The class was welcomed back with a Surgical and Hospital Care course and a PAKRAT exam. Although challenging, the exam provided the class with a benchmark of their progress thus far and outlined their study plans moving forward. The class of 2016 is looking forward to starting their clinical phase rotations in October and being able to apply their didactic learning in various settings.

We are also excited to welcome the class of 2017 into our program. They were introduced to students and faculty during a summer picnic and voiced their readiness to tackle the challenges that are ahead. The class will begin with a Foundations course which culminates in their white coat ceremony. We wish them the best of luck as they begin their studies.

Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

Seems fitting for all which comes with a new academic year.

Here’s to warm fall months!

Bethel UpdateGreta Sowles, PA-S

As the State Fair marks the end of summer, the 80-degree days begin to drop to the brisk highs of 60, letting us know that fall is inevitably right around the corner. Along with colorful leaves, caramel apples and football, the Bethel University PA program has some exciting updates, making this fall especially unique.

On August 1, Bethel’s inaugural cohort participated in the program’s first white coat ceremony. 31 students successfully graduated with high program performance on standardized tests and positive preceptor feedback. Members of the cohort are finding jobs in Minnesota and all around the country, including in California, Washington, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

To date, 100 percent of the inaugural cohort has passed the boards, although not all students have taken them. More information on pass rates will be on the program’s website soon.

The 2016 cohort is just finishing up their first month of clinical rotations. Half of the class will be moving on to a second rotation, whereas the other half will begin a second month of either family practice or internal medicine.

The 2017 cohort has just begun their second term of classes, excited not to spend 16 hours a week in anatomy and anticipating the wealth of knowledge that comes from a rigorous fall schedule. The class is planning to volunteer at a water station during the Twin Cities Marathon on October 4 and also plans to have an informational booth on Bethel’s main campus to celebrate national PA week.

Bethel’s program as a whole has successfully passed the first two steps of new program accreditation and is busy working on the third step, which includes an application and visit to

the facility in 2016. The program’s clinical team continues to actively recruit quality partners to mentor students during the clinical year. Currently active preceptors are quite complementary of how well prepared the Bethel students are in knowledge and professional attributes.

Augsburg UpdateLisa Hanson, PA-S

The Class of 2015 is finishing their last clinical rotations before returning to Augsburg for final classroom work. The students are looking forward to graduation in December.

The Class of 2016 is busy studying for the academic phase summative exam. They will be transitioning from the didactic to clinical phase of the program in October.

The Class of 2017 has finished their first semester of anatomy and pathophysiology and has now entered fall semester. The students are excited to be learning about clinical medicine and pharmacotherapy as

well as practicing history and physical exams.

There are several exciting updates from the Augsburg PA Program. The Augsburg College PA Program is pleased to announce our relocation to a new space on the beautiful Luther Seminary campus in St. Paul, MN. We are excited to start classes this fall in our new facilities. There will be an Open House on October 1st, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30. Please join us as we celebrate our new location.

In addition, our new program director Alicia Quella, PhD, MPAS, PA-C is starting in September. Dr. Quella received her bachelor’s degree from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa in 1993, her Master of Physician Assistant Studies in 1999 at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, Iowa and her Doctorate of Philosophy in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at the University of Iowa in 2010. Dr. Quella has been heavily involved in physician assistant education since 2010 and comes to Augsburg after serving as Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of the Spokane site for the MEDEX Northwest Physician Assistant Program based in Seattle, Washington.

We are also very excited to announce that Skye Peltier, MPH, PA-C, a 2005 graduate of the Augsburg PA Program, will be starting this fall in her new role as a faculty member in the academic phase of the program. She brings a wealth of clinical experience working as a PA in hematology, and also has a Masters in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in community health education. We are very excited to welcome both Dr. Quella and Professor Peltier!
