MOUNT MERRION U11 PREMIER –
A Season to Remember
Afterwinning theMGL
Umbro Cup in2015/2016 bothgirls and coachescouldn’t wait forthe new seasonto start. Theseason kicked offin August with aRound Robin todetermineparticipants inthe MGL PremierLeague. 6 winsfrom 6 duly sawthe girls up intothe higherechelons, and 5wins and a draw from the first6 games laid down a seriousmarker to the more fanciedteams of Glebe and Esker.
The highlights of the seasonwere many and varied –Jennifer’s guaranteed 4impossible saves a gamemade us the toughest team tobeat; Emer’s goal lineclearance against Esker thatdefied the laws of physics;Juliet’s relentless enthusiasmfor man-marking (‘Coach, putme back onto that starplayer’); Charlotte’s returnfrom her Canadian sojournson a day she covered everyblade of grass on the pitch –jetlag be damned! ;Francesca’s finest day againstClonee speeding like ascalectrix car from box to box, bamboozling attackers anddefenders alike; Emily
shepherding dangerousattackers into faraway corners, like sheep into a pen; Annathrowing off the shackles ofdefense to score her first goalwith the last kick of the gameagainst Killegland; Zoepeppering goal lines like amachine gunner from the edgeof the box; Grace’s showstealing hat trick inAshbourne; Madelaine’sdiscipline in taking heed of hercoach’s advice (‘Don’t try andrun the length of the pitch, lookfor the pass’) by running thelength of the pitch to scoreand get us back into the top ofthe table showdown againstGlebe; Katie’s last minute net-busting free kick winner intothe top corner againstLakelands, and her lob-wedgefinish that broke Cloneehearts; Glebe parents seeking
out Alice to congratulate herafter her virtuoso performancein Balbriggan that putpreviously undefeated Glebeto the sword.
Success was measured with asilver medal from the league, acup semi final, and thewinner’s trophy from Belles inthe Meadow. But the standoutmemory for the coaches wasthe day Storm Doris poundedDeerpark and we exited thecup – in the most horrible ofconditions, the resilience, spirit, camaraderie andteamwork of this special groupof girls shone through as theyfought tooth and nail to theend. Next season can’t comefast enough!

COACHING ACADEMY
At the beginning of May, I was appointed to therole of Coaching
Academy Director with MountMerrion Youths Football Clubwith the aim of furtherdeveloping and improving theexisting structures within thesmall sided game section.Currently I hold a UEFA Blicense, I have also qualifiedwith a Master’s of ScienceDegree in Sports Coaching &Performance from theUniversity of South Wales andbring a wealth of experience tothe Club having held variousdifferent roles and coachedplayers of all standards fromgrassroots to eliteinternational standard.
My previous experienceincludes the roles of ClubCoach and Football CommunityDevelopment Officer with St Joseph’s Boys FC, ClubHead Coach with BeechwoodFC, Football Facilitator in theInstitute of Art Design &Technology (IADT), HeadCoach with the North DublinSchoolboy’s League &Metropolitan Girls LeagueAcademy Squads and AcademyCoach with Swansea CityFootball Club during my timein Wales.
Since being appointed to therole of Coaching AcademyDirector with Mount Merrion,my aim has been to reviewand progress the currentcoaching structures that existwithin the Club. Moving
forward the focus will be onfurthering both player andcoach development throughseveral initiatives. Initially, atraining structure will bedevised and implemented foreach age group across thesmall sided game section withthe main focus on individualtechnical development forplayers. Furthermore, playerswill also be provided with self-development opportunitiesthrough devising self-development plans with theaid of their coaches andundertaking performanceanalysis sessions, observingand analysing elite players, providing them with visuallearning experiences.
My coaching philosophy iscentred on the development ofthe athlete and ensuring that aplayer-centred approach isadopted in every aspect. Myview is that coaches mustcreate a positive learningenvironment where theplayer’s interests and needsare at the centre of their
thinking. Players should beappropriately challengedwithin training and games andby devising a curriculum foreach group will provide arationale for each squad isprovided. This will allow foreasier transition from 5v5 to7v7 onto 11v11 football.
This is also an extremelyimportant and exciting timefor the Club having furtherdeveloped the merger withUCD to now become the UCDMount Merrion Academy. Tobe the sole schoolboy link toUCD AFC is highly beneficialto the Club and allows ourplayers and coaches accessand exposure to a professionalenvironment and the potentialto compete within theunderage League of Irelandsystem which is currentlybeing implemented. Therefore, the task is to improve ouroverall standards and severaldevelopment programmes willbe rolled out over the comingmonths such as CoerverDevelopment Sessions forplayers and also coachmentoring & developmentinitiatives. I am very excited toget to grips with the role andhopefully play a key part in thedevelopment of the Club.”

Christopher Brennan

LONG TERM PLAYER
DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY
Active Start Stage – Ages: 2, 3 & 4Soccer contributes to the well-being of
children by engaging them in the sport,
while teaching them basic movement skills.
At this introductory level, the objective is to
get moving, keep active & have fun, in a
safe, low pressure, positive learning
environment.
Fundamentals Stage –
Ages: 5, 6, 7 & 8At this stage, individual player development
is paramount. Players at this stage are totally
self-centred & the primary focus should be
on individual, technical ball mastery.
Coaches should create a stimulating learning
environment where the atmosphere is one
of freedom and fun.” A “positive coaching”
philosophy is vital at this stage.
Learning to train stage –
Ages: 9, 10 & 11The effect of the role-model is very
important at this stage. Children begin to
identify with famous players and successful
teams, and they want to learn imaginative
skills. Skill demonstration is very important,
and the players learn best by “doing.”
Training to train stage – Ages: 12 & 13Awareness of tactics within the game becomes an
important facet of the learning process. Players
tend to be self-critical and begin to question
more, but they are also beginning to form a
strong commitment to the team.
Training to compete stage –
Ages: 14 & 15Athletes who are now proficient at performing
basic and soccer-specific skills are working to gain
more game maturity as they learn to perform
these skills under a variety of competitive
conditions. Players must have a sound
understanding of the game principles and
concepts.
Training to win stage – Ages: 16+The majority of the player’s social, physical,
technical, tactical, and psychological qualities are
now fully established, and the focus of training has
shifted to optimisation of performance. The focus
at this stage is on the maximisation of all
capacities, in an effort to produce good people as
well as good footballers.
Active for life: Retention &
Recruitment stage – Ages: AllThe recruitment and retention of players,
coaches, referees and administrators is key to the
ongoing development & long term future of
Mount Merrion Youth F. C.
THE CLUB PHILOSOPHYThe club objective is to play football at the highest level possible, across every age group &
across every league entered in to. The club will achieve this by utilising a style of football that
is attacking & skilful in its nature. The club will continually endeavour to facilitate matching
player’s talent with the appropriate level of challenge & participation.
A player centred approach will be employed by all coaches & managers. There will be a
focus on performance & development rather than results. Players will be encouraged to
make their own footballing decisions in an effort to increase learning. The club also
recognises that fun & social inclusion is important for all teams regardless of league or ability.
